On Shahed-baazi

by Farah Rusta on

Please remember that women in Iran, until early 20th century, were largely treated as hidden objects, similar to women in Taleban's Afghanisatan, used for procreation and lust. The pure (Platonic) love was reserved for the boys in their pre-puberty phase. We are talking about an era in which if two male friends would bump into each other, it would have been an un-Islamic and very intimate (naamoosi) thing if one asked the other:" by the way how is your wife?" Shahed-baazi according to some has its root in the Greek culture and philosophy in which women, though not hidden from the public's eye, were objects of procreation and young males were objects of pure beauty and Platonic love. Even there are verses in Quran that promise male servants to serve and entertain the pious (male and female) who end up in jannah (paradise).

Therefore there is no surprise that in the absence of female entertainers and mistresses which would have invited the death penalty by the ruling clergy. the focus of attention and affection and often a fatherly protection was switched to beautiful boys. With the exception of a short period under the Taleban, including the present time, the practice known as Bacheh-baazi is commonplace in Afghanistan where young dancing boys indulge a gathering of male and often married admirers. In Persian poetry they are mostly regarded as symbols of divine love as they were considered as the works of a charitable Creator who had gifted them to men to in His praise. There were very rare and few direct reference's to sexual act (except in a couple of instances in Saadi's) and mostly the sexual satisfaction was achieved through kisses and cuddles  (Zakani explicitly recommended shaahed-baazi). During the rule of Sultan Mahmoud Ghaznavi, his love affair with his male servant, Ayaaz, was subject of many poetic references including one by Hafez.

Saadi's work (boostan and golestan) is rife in such symbolism (and sometime not so much of a symbol).

But Hafez's place in Persian poetry remains sacrosanct.

.Where would Iran be without Hafez and Saadi?

by Aliafandi on

Hafez and saadi are the true prophets on earth. Existance of these figures is what Persian/Iranian pride is all about. Many other cultures have used their poetry to figure out what life is all about in the eye of Persian civilization. Sad to say that almost every Irani in our country has a copy of Quran (not to mention that no one reads it and pays attention to what it says), but you only find people who love peotry with Golestan saadi or Divan hafez. If only these people knew what they are missing. How enhanced their life could have been by learning from thes two true prophets.

Maziar,

you are born once but you invent and reinvent your thoughts again and again. Its called maturity and intelligence. Nothing can make or seperate you from who you are and seems that you are redefining exactly that.

If you like Hafez dont forget to listen to the audio narration in my other post here.

It seems that we share the same interest for Hafez. I'm so glad that there are lots of Hafez lovers among us.

I will defenitively look for the Abbasi-Hafez program. Thank you so much.

**** Apparently you found it? I will look at it now. Thanks again

How about Sham'd din muhammad shirazi or Hafez?

by Aliafandi on

Souri,

I came acress a Internet Radio station called Abbasi-hafez narrated by a gentleman from Paris. This is one of the best narrations I've heard about Hafez which inlcudes many moseghi sonnati covering hafez's ghazal. It is very interesting and sweet. Just do a Google search for "Abbasi-hafez" and you 'll be able to  download the MP3 file and enjoy. I wish there was a way to upload it here.

I love Hafez as much as you do :) So much so I have written in my Will that I wish to be buried/cremated with a copy of my Divan-e-Hafez in hand. Farah Rusta knows which verse from Lisan-e-Ghayb to put on my tombstone.

Shaahid baazi/sacred pederasty in Sufism, etc

by Aryana-Vaeja on

Peter Lamborn Wilson devotes a whole chapter to it in Scandal: Essays in Islamic Heresy. However it is a stretch to attribute shaahid baazi to Hafez. There is no evidence in his ghazals for this kind of behavior. The prominent Sufi and poet who shaahid baazi is attributable to was Awhaduddin Kirmani, a contemporary of both Rumi and Shams whom both were quite critical of for the practice.

Samsam, in Persian literature (esp. where poetry is concerned) Hafez is the crown beyond which there is no where else to go. In terms of the three literary ornaments of our culture I believe someone on a spiritual Path should be reading and meditating on, in my opinion Ferdowsi shows the method of 'Ishq, Mowlana demonstrates the Way of 'Ishq and Hafez expresses its reality. So Ferdowsi's Shahnameh is the shari'at  of Ishq, Mowlana's Masnavi is the tariqat of Ishq and Hafez' ghazals are the haqiqat of 'Ishq. For me, the three literary ornaments of the Way  here are also completed by the Avesta (esp. the Gathas) as the fourth.

That aside, the fascination of Iranian women with the Tongue of the Unseen from Shiraz is manifold. Number one because no one can express the ambiguity of 'Ishq like Hafez can, and women are all into the ambiguities of Love. But more importantly, the ghazals of Hafez have been used by both women and male adepts of the Way for purposes of theurgy and magic (sihr o jadu). Certain ghazals of Hafez are regularly used to cast  love spells. However which ones and how the process works is a secret only us adepts know ;-)

Happy 2011 :)

A very happy new yr to u 2 dear. I,m just stating some random points..no biggie..As for Hafiz eventhough he talks about the lust for the unshaved face of a beautiful young shahed I cant  in all honesty call him a pedo but others such as some suffie writers are self-proclaimed Pedos. & btw, there is a difference between homosexuality & pedophilia in that the first is between willing adults & the latter between an adult & a minor. & remember that the all cliche Iranian "Ensaaniat va eshgh" has brought us here ;:)).

Cheers dear lady!!!

Hafiz the prophet :)

by SamSamIIII on

Souri jaan ; I found out the hard way how fanatic hafiz, saadi & molana lovers are about these characters.. ooops meant "Prophets" ;:). . On another note, its worthy to point out that there were 2 classes of suffie/kharabati faithfuls. One was the insurgent activist class such as Raoufis caste which were suppressed & defeated by Teymour's army & the Molana/Hafiz class of passive tolerance & submission to fate which were funded & promoted openly by status quo power of sultans . The likes of Hafiz & other kharabati/ suffi writers belonged to the 2nd class . Shaikh Saffi al din himself belonged to the submissive suffie class and yet in an ironic twist his great grandson shah esmaiil raised by ghezelbash became a jehadist fanatic suffie bent on promoting the heretic branch of shia.

Mind you, I always wonder about the cultist infatuation between Iranian women & Hafiz(some in my own family back home) . Some of these suffies were borderline pedophile by modern terms.

Cheers!!!

How about Hafez?

We don't know so much about his private life. I love Hafez like, he is like a prophet for me. But I believe some of his poems are about "boys" too....Do you know anything about that? Thanks.
