Iranian women soar at the expense of Iranian men?!

I am certain you also have noticed that Iranian women within last few years have been handsomely rewarded by western societies at the expense of the Iranian men! Lets take a tally. Within last 5 years Iranian women have been awarded a Nobel prize, become nominated for Oscar, traveled to space as first female tourist and were runner up to miss universe among others! A recent example to a lesser degree was recognition of Christian Amanpour by Queen of England for her role as chief CNN international correspondent. This all is happening while their fellow male compatriots are being labeled as "terrorists", being looked upon as suspicious, tasered in university campuses and discriminated against in western societies for most part. These are indisputable facts evident to any fair observer. Now this observation is not intended to create a controversy and bring about waves of criticism uncalled for. So let me preempt such misinterpretation of my view by saying for most part those who were awarded such honors and recognitions deserved it. That however can not hide the fact that west has not been fair in acknowledging the contributions of Iranian men to world culture and affairs and even worse has not provided an opportunity for them to do so if not raising hurdles in their path indeed. Lets me finish this by congratulating all the Iranian women for their achievements on the world scene. That is a pride that indeed all Iranians share. On a lighter note I'd like to speculate what could be the next achievement for them on horizon as it sure seems we have covered most categories up to now. Let me think.....hum... Can not think of anything now. That would be for another blog! ;-)

Iranian man: I hope Iran's next president is a reasonable woman

by Anonymous0001 (not verified) on

I am an Iranian man. I would say I feel 50 percent happy 50 percent unhappy about iranian women's advance-I feel at least a small part of their success is politically motivated and most of it is due to their hard work and motivation. I congratulate our fine sister's on their advance in the world stage from the bottom of my heart and I wish for more for them. I believe in Ted Turner's saying that women make the best managers-period. I truly hope and pray that our next president be a woman and I truly believe that she can take us iranians out of the international political rut that we are stuck in thanks to our wonderful!:) current leaders.

An iranian man's point of view.

Of course we congrats the Iranian women for their achivements. But, let's face it, it is the west who is womenizing the women and labeling the middle eastern men as terrorists!!

by Tugger on

How can you say Iranian men have not been acknowledged? That's what the tazer was for. How much more acknowledged can you get?

Dear Boroumand

by khanumhana77 (not verified) on

We are all Iranians and as such if a man is percieved as a terrorist, so is his countrywoman. If a female wins an award, so does her countryman.

To say the west has not been fair in acknowledging the contributions of Iranian men is to say you have been sleeping for the past few centuries.

Just wanted to say you awfully sound like a Strom Thurman Democrat. Be proud of it and your point of view and next time you apply for a job or hire someone make sure to let 'em know that you are a Strom Thurman liberal. Congrats on that.

swans versus hyenas

by witness (not verified) on

One definition of courage is grace under fire:
Iranian women have shown more than enough of this
to deserve not just one, but many Nobel Prizes.

Iranian women have the beauty of swans and the courage of lions.

It is the vile "islamic" "men" who are the chicken-
hyenas,- subhuman violent, irrational, cowardly
bullies, talented only at abusing and murdering
children and women, and at oppressing and exploiting
the poor, the weak and the disadvantaged. They are
rightly despised and hated by all civilized humanity. The "prize" these animals deserve is to
be hanged from the nearest tree.

Before this so called

by rashti (not verified) on

Before this so called revolution my grandmother was a magestrate and my mother was the director of nursing for the largest hospital in Tehran. All of the men in my family rested on there laurels and had unearned titles. My grandmother always said the only reason that men in the middle east veiled there women was because they were petrified of them. The're all a bunch of bacheh nanehs. Poor things as soon as there balls drop they too will be gifted with noble laureates, but until then all we can do is listen to them whine about how every woman's a whore and how there gheimeh sucks.

Azadeh Azad

No direct connections between the two

by Azadeh Azad on

Dear M. Borumand,

.

The great majority of Middle—Eastern fundamentalists who blow themselves and other people/things up are males. So, It is understandable (without being acceptable) why Iranian men (put maliciously in the same bag as these "terrorists") are targeted by the Western racists. Iranian women being generally dominated by the men in our society (as were women in the 19th century Western societies), they have the advantage of being PERCEIVED as not a threat to the Western societies.

.

So, it is important to realise that the Iranian women’s situation in the West is not created "at the expense of the Iranian men," as you put it. Their situation is simply different than Iranian men for the above reason.

.

You acknowledge that "those [women] who were awarded such honors and recognitions deserved it", but at the same time you assert that Iranian women have been "rewarded by western societies at the expense of the Iranian men." The phrase "at the expense of" conveys the idea of detriment to men caused by the celebration of women’s achievement; while it doesn’t really seem to be any direct connection between the two.

How about male/female figures from other countries?

by IraniValiAzad (not verified) on

Mr. Brumand,

Thanks for your reply. I sort of understand your point, however, what I fail to understand is why you pick on Iranian men! Why can't you say, couple of German male scientists won nobel physics, chemistry, etc. prizes, and no German female figure name has been mentioned in anything, therefore, there is a conspericy to keep German women down!

Regradless, I also know of a few Iranian male figures high up in successful companies or universities and I am proud of their achievements.

Most of all WHO CARES! I think Queen should stop the whole enchilada. It's just wrong century! She should be treated as a foot note to one of shakespeare plays! Don't you think?!

politically motivated.

by markux (not verified) on

Capable Iranian women deserve all the rewards they can get. But the recent event have all been politically motivated. Iranian women are worthy not because they are recognized by the west but because of who they are. Iranian women have always been in the forefront of all the Iranian struggles. We should not be manipulated by the west political agenda. And for heaven sake don't put so much weight on the status of Amanpour, she talks a good talk but she is not an honest reporter and has recently been a tool of the western political power like all the others in her disgraced profession.

I say Iraninan men are getting soft. What happened to the days when a woman's place was in the kitchen? I want those days back! It pisses me off to no end seeing women anywhere else other than in the kitchen! What happened to our "aberoo" and our "namoos?" You can be proud but I am ashamed! I say in with the "chadors" and out with this nonsense of equal rights! I say if "Fatemeh Zahra" did not go to space, nor should any other woman! Damn, I am mad!

Please keep talking about

by PT (not verified) on

Please keep talking about this while me and my sisters advance in society and blow you all away :)

It would have been nice if our men were behind us and enjoying it instead of questioning our competence. After all, when men won awards we didn't say "not sure what kiarostami has done for cinema these days".

Ebadi hasn't taken advantage of her position. But a pannel some where found her worthy of the award.

Borumand_M

Now that we are at it:

by Borumand_M on

Not sure what Ms Ebadi had done for world peace (before nomination that is) on a global scale. She definitely is a champion of civil rights in Iran. But as JJ mentioned so is Ganji! Now I am not about to advocate one or another or anoyone else for that matter "I report you decide"!

As much as civil rights awards by Ganji does not hold a candle to Nobel peace prize perhaps same can be told of the best actor or supporting actor compare to rest of Oscar categories. After jahanshah has to scratch his head to remember that other half Iranian guy!

Ok. JJ has a point. But lets say statistically so much nomination and recognition at the down of this new millennium compare to almost vacuum of the past two is bound to raise some eye brows!

Jahanshah Javid

Haalaa kojaasho deedee!

by Jahanshah Javid on

Iranian men have received plenty of (positive) recognition. Have you forgotten Kiarostami and all the other filmmakers at international festivals every year? How many human rights awards has Akbar Ganji received? I've lost count. Before Aghdashloo was nominated for an Oscar, Darius Khonji was nominated Best Cinematographer (Evita, 1996). And before Amanpour, at least one male of Iranian descent has been knighighted by Queen Elizabeth (I believe he's a businessman; can't remember his name). I think women are receiving awards more than ever simply because they are participating in society more than ever before. Haalaa kojaasho deedee!

Iranian Women soar due to Anti-Iran/Anti-Moslem position

by Anonymous0001 (not verified) on

With all due respect to Iranian women, I believe they have soared because of their consistent anti-Iran/anti-Moslem position that they hold in the last 10 - 15 years most noticeably. There are a number of very prominent european anti-moslem organizations esp. in northern europe that were founded and headed by iranian women esp. since the increase in islamophobia/xenophobia in Europe. Iranian men-even non moslem iranian men have suffered because we have preached a tolerant point of view towards iran and towards moslems in general. One prominent example in my mind is Omid Djalili (he isn't moslem by the way) has always tried to promote a tolerant view towards iran and moslems thru his comedy. He has always tried to promote tolerance and acceptance of others imho. But look he hasn't gotten anywhere in his career.

A terrorist in space! ;-)

by Borumand_M on

  To IraniValiAzad:

Even though I could name some names I rather not flatter them in a public venue! I leave that to other informed readers of this site. I may also add that with the exception of the "Miss world" runner up I don't see why my fellow Iranian men could not have won any of the other acknowledgments!! After all few of us knew Ms Ebadi before she was chosen for Nobel prize! But lets think for a moment. Imagine an Iranian guy was about to board a space shuttle! FOX news would go ballistic before he would! "A terrorist at the helm of the space shuttle", headlines would read! That could have been considered a present and clear danger to security of "some" country in Middle east! What if he hijacks the spaceship, land on the moon and scream "Allah Akbar"?! and all kind of other utter nonsense! I am sure you can fill the rest. I also mentioned that west has been depriving Iranian men from opportunities that may evolve to high accomplishments and in some cases creates obstacles for them.

best...

You are so wrong when you said "certainly doubt an Iranian man, regardless of his wealth, throw away 20 million USD, to be called first Iranian space tourist"
When it comes to cheshm-o-hamcheshmi you can be sure iranians are number one, the next iranian probably throw in 22 millions just to show off that he/she has
more money to spend and will keep brag about it.

by the way, I certainly doubt an Iranian man, regardless of his wealth, throw away 20 million USD, to be called first Iranian space tourist.
