Thanks DK for tis blog, and bringing up this controversial debate.

Azadeh khanom thanks for actually reading the text, very few people actauly do that.

Every time I re-read this essay I  get the urge to translate it to English, and then a look at the table with stacks of translations to be done,...One of these days...

Ghareh Ghezlo's contribution on Ferdowsi is a remarkable essay, unmatched in its scholarship and politics, as far as I've read.

Thank you for your insights and feedbacks. If anyone has the original text or footage of the conference it would be very interesting to see what were his exact arguments and line of reasoning on this subject. Thank you HTG in particular for the link to the literary critic provided.

Best,

For a Marxist Critique of Ferdowsi and Shamlo

by Hooshang Tarreh-Gol on

====================================== The above essay was originally written a while ago, in response to attacks on Shamlo, and it was reposted on various sites again last year.  In this brilliant essay Prof. Comrade Ghareh Gezloo, a leading light of Iranian intellegensia, provides not only a critique and deconstruction of Shamlo's , incorrect, reading of Shahnameh, but also provides an introuduction to a decontruction of Shahnameh itself. Happy reading

Shamlou & Ferdowsi

by Azadeh Azad on

It is clear that Shamlou attempted a "marxist reading" of Shahnameh, and that in the context of Marxmania and the Cult of Sacred Proletariat among the Iranian Left.

It would have been much more efficient and creative for Shamlou to have written a poem, describing the relationship between Zahhak, Kaveh, Fereidun and the rest of the characters as he thought them fit, as an alternative, as a myth created by himself.

Cheers,

Azadeh
