The Armenian Genocide also known as the Armenian Holocaust refers to the deliberate and systematic destruction of the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire during and just after World War I. The Republic of Turkey to this day continues to deny that it ever happened.

ARARAT (2002)  a film by Canadian Armenian director Atom Egoyan starring Charles Aznavour and Christopher Plummer:

The Armenian Genocide also known as the Armenian Holocaust, the Armenian Massacres and, by Armenians, as the Great Crime refers to the deliberate and systematic destruction (genocide) of the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire during and just after World War I.It was implemented through wholesale massacres and deportations, with the deportations consisting of forced marches under conditions designed to lead to the death of the deportees. The total number of resulting Armenian deaths is generally held to have been between one and one and a half million.Other ethnic groups were similarly attacked by the Ottoman Empire during this period, including Assyrians and Greeks, and some scholars consider those events to be part of the same policy of extermination.

It is widely acknowledged to have been one of the first modern genocides,as scholars point to the systematic, organized manner in which the killings were carried out to eliminate the Armenians, and it is the second most-studied case of genocide after the Holocaust. The word genocide was coined in order to describe these events.

The starting date of the genocide is conventionally held to be April 24, 1915, the day that Ottoman authorities arrested some 250 Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Constantinople.Thereafter, the Ottoman military uprooted Armenians from their homes and forced them to march for hundreds of miles, depriving them of food and water, to the desert of what is now Syria. Massacres were indiscriminate of age or gender, with rape and other sexual abuse commonplace.

The Republic of Turkey, the successor state of the Ottoman Empire, denies the word genocide is an accurate description of the events (see, Denial of the Armenian Genocide). In recent years, it has faced repeated calls to accept the events as genocide. To date, twenty countries have officially recognized the events of the period as genocide, and most genocide scholars and historians accept this view. The majority of Armenian diaspora communities were founded as a result of the Armenian genocide.

She is also French Armenian ...

I could have added Henri Verneuil to the list given that I am a movie buff. He directed many films with Belmondo and Delon in the 60's and 70's.

Immortal Guard

A few points!

by Immortal Guard on

1) It seems that in recent times the Armenian Genocide is being given more prominence in order to balance the Jewish Holocaust.

2) Armenians have to understand that there is a cold war (e.g. psychological warfare, economic warfare etc.) and a warm war (military warfare, genocide etc.). But at the end of the day war is war.

3) The Armenians tend to summarize their whole history in the Armenian Genocide. They should give some attention to other periods of their history as well.

4) Most people have a strong tendency to remember their bad and bitter experiences but not their good experiences. For example they would remember a small bad gesture in distant past but completely forget a big good gesture in recent past. In the same vain they tend to give more weight to their bad experiences and to give less weight to their good experiences. Somehow good is the normal state of affairs and is taken for granted.

5) There is evidence showing (also mentioned in one of the clips) that the Armenians also behaved atrociously during WWI when they had the upper hand over the Turks.

6) One should never forget how an avalanche strats. It takes the accumulation of lots of snow and then a small trigger does the job.

7) What do Armenians hope to gain in concrete terms in the aftermath of an official recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Turkey?

8) How come nobody writes or talks that much about the Iraqi Genocide. According to the latest figures one million and three hundred thousand people have perished in Iraq since the US-led invasion began in 2003. How come Tariq Aziz was spared execution?

A one of a kind ballet of Zal and Rudabeh from Ferdowsi's Shahnameh was choreographed by Ms. Ana Djanbazian, an Armenian Iranian. Ms. Djanbazian thank you!  I am proud to be your compatriot.

S#$% all over your blog?

Great historic review. Perhaps the kindness of Iranians has had some positive results. Iranian Armenians, many of whom are refugees from the genocide are fiercely nationalistic.
