Russia-Syria plane carried 'ammunition' - Turkey PM (bbc)

A Syrian-bound plane intercepted by Turkey was carrying Russian-made defence equipment destined for Syria's defence ministry, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said.

"Passenger aircraft cannot carry ammunition and defence equipment," Mr Erdogan said, adding, "unfortunately there was such equipment on board".

Turkish jets forced the plane, coming from Moscow, to land in Ankara.

Syria and Russia have denied the plane was carrying illegal cargo.

They have accused Turkey of putting lives in danger.

The Syrian Air Airbus A320, with about 30 passengers on board, was intercepted on Wednesday evening by two Turkish fighters and escorted to the capital's Esenboga airport.

Turkey said previously it had received an intelligence tip-off that it had illegal cargo on board.

Speaking to reporters in Ankara, Mr Erdogan said: "This was equipment and ammunition that was being sent from a Russian agency... to the Syrian Defence Ministry."

"Their examination is continuing and the necessary will follow," he added.

He said the supplier was the equivalent of Turkey's state-run arms supplier, the Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation.

Russia's state arms export agency Rosoboronexport had earlier said it had no information about the plane's cargo and denied it had any connection with the flight or anything on board.

The aircraft was allowed to take off at 02:30 (23:30 GMT on Wednesday), after several hours on the ground, but Syria and Russia have reacted angrily to the incident.

They said Turkey put the passengers and crew in danger by using military aircraft to force it to land.

Syrian Transport Minister Mahmoud Saeed accused Turkey of carrying out "air piracy" and breaking civil aviation agreements, according to Lebanon's al-Manar TV.

Turkey has already imposed an arms embargo on Syria, and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said it was determined to stop any transfer of weapons to Syria through its airspace.

The foreign ministry said there was "no basis" for safety concerns and that "all measures were taken to ensure the safety of all passengers and to cater to their possible needs".

Damaged ties

Since the uprising against Syria President Bashar al-Assad began last year, Russia has repeatedly refused to abandon its support for Damascus, while Turkey has been a vocal critic of the Assad government.

The BBC's James Reynolds, near the Syrian border in southern Turkey, says that despite taking opposite views, Ankara and Moscow have maintained a close relationship and continued to do business together.

This incident could be the biggest test of their ties since the conflict broke out, he adds.

Tensions were already high between Turkey and Syria, following the deaths of five Turkish civilians by shelling from across the border last week.

Turkey has returned fire, and on Wednesday its top military commander warned Ankara would respond with greater force if the shelling continued.

In another sign of deteriorating relations, Turkish officials revealed on Thursday that Syria had stopped buying electricity from its neighbour last week.

Turkey wants NATO missiles for Syria (cnn)

Istanbul, Turkey (CNN) -- In a potential escalation of the Syrian conflict, Turkey asked NATO on Wednesday for Patriot missiles to bolster its air defenses against its southern neighbor.

A letter to NATO included the "formal request" that the alliance send "air defense elements," according to a Turkish government statement that cited "the threats and risks posed by the continuing crisis in Syria to our national security."

The statement added that the NATO Council would convene "shortly" to consider the matter.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in a Twitter post that the request would be considered without delay.

In a statement on Wednesday, Rasmussen said the letter from Turkey requested Patriot missiles that would "contribute to the de-escalation of the crisis along NATO's south-eastern border" and serve as "a concrete demonstration of alliance solidarity and resolve."

Rasmussen's statement said three NATO countries have available Patriot missiles -- Germany, the Netherlands and the United States -- and it would be up to them to decide if they can deploy them and for how long.

A NATO team will visit Turkey next week to survey possible deployment sites for the Patriot missiles, Rasmussen's statement said.

Why Report on other Peoples Propaganda? Like the US Governments

by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on

DK????  Why do you bother as an iranian and a Monarchist?  Iranians have a responsibility to stand for Iranian Freedom and Justice, not follow the lies of those who present themselves as being for the Freedom and Human rights of other.  You are not being a good example as a result of misunderstandings, by allowing deceit maybe for yourself, you encourage others to think this way, which is a real pity. What do you think?

I posted this comment to Ayatoilet, though his personal views are far beyond rescuing and founded on zilch:  Some of it would be good for you.

Not that it is the mass Media and University institutions Misinform the
public and then people act based on their conscience with out much true
information, in Irans case allowing lies in, but what's funny is that
you feel that you are immune to all this.

  • US is the last beacon of hope people in countries like Iran have for
liberation or freedom.  LOL after helping MeK, the deceit still has a hold on you after all that has happened LOL.
  • The Europeans for sure could not care less about
freedom anywhere else.  No Western Powers care about freedom for
anyone except for their own, especially the USA.  This is based on 250
years of track record.  It's individual societies responsibility to care
    for their own Freedom.
  • And even in the U.S. there are powerful forces
that would thwart the legitimate aspirations of ordinary people in
places like Iran. LOL that includes those who purchased OBAMA's postion.
  • People should NOT forget that the Democrats - yes the
Obama adminstration has freed over 100 Million people from Tunisia to
Yemen. Its clear what the Democrats stand for.
LOL especially after Khomeini and MeK recently.

You are a Victim of serious propaganda, if you can hold any of those
views with a straight face.  In the last 4 Years the USA caused a
serious global credit crunch and in co-operation with the Europeans sent
over 800 Million people into extreme povery, god only knows how many
hundreds of thousands of people died of starvation.  You forgot to
mention OBAMA is a recipient of the Nobel Peace prize, that'll come in
pretty handy as the Democrats support extremists and demonize those who
oppose them. : )
