In the United States, most people do not know the origin of basic food. The agribusiness conglomerates fought to stop food labelling for many years, especially country of origin labelling for produce (yes some countries use toxic chemicals (DDT anyone?) to give us those out of season fruits). When you go to buy your plants for Meatless Monday, read the labels carefully.
When you do decide to opt for meat, go for grass-fed. Or do a grass-fed Monday. A small change can really add up and decrease your risk to food poisoning.
Beef is one of those foods that typically comes from sketchy locations. We have a handful of factory producers of beef. The animals are treated like the stuff they expel. They are fed a corn diet primarly, which is terrible for many reasons, the main of which is that cows are herbivores. If you can, buy grass-fed beef. Also, most beef is washed in ammonia because of the constant outbreaks of deadly E. Coli. These cows live in their excrement from birth to (inhumane) slaughter. If you buy from places like Whole Foods, you know why you pay more. You are buying from farmers who are not government subsidized. You're paying for cleaner, safer, and more humane meat.
Meatless Mondays is an idea that isn't borne out of vegetarianism. It's meant to help people discover the importance of plants in the human diet. Nutrients in plants are very helpful in combatting and preventing chronic diseases. Try it once a week and feel the difference.
//www.huffingtonpost.com/michael-pollan/food-...
//www.whiteoakpastures.com/ (why grass fed beef is better - alkalai rumen - their bodies can fight the deadly e. coli. Corn diet has created a new strain of E. Coli that is acid resistant - Hello Beef Recall City!)
The other point of Meatless Monday is to give the Beef Industry a financial st(e)ake in changing its sick practices. If you feel strongly, just change your diet. Get healthy and sane. Good luck!

Of the white meat, mostly is fish, particularly salmon, Cod, and Halibut

Even if it means ingesting some pesticide because organic is expensive or not available, it's OK. Our bodies are specimens of nature. THey clean themselves well. Fat and salt are fine. In fact, we need them!

Hmm.. but
My BF is always complaining about the weight Im putting on..oh what the heck-- You can get a BF any time but kashko bademjoon is a different story...

either go veggie or pay attention to...
by Monda on Sun Apr 04, 2010 01:33 PM PDTwhere your meat is coming from. Buy from local ranches with sound practices (takes a little research, that's all), better yet if you don't want to only depend on vegetables and grains, then eat fish that's Wild without mercury. Don't buy seafood (or any frozen meat) from Thailand or China or anywhere near those regions. Go Alaskan Wild for salmon or again get local fresh from clean waters.
Good blog Marge, you're on a roll.

by I Have a Crush on Alex Trebek on Sun Apr 04, 2010 11:05 AM PDTI had the same reaction to Fast Food Nation and the bailouts. I couldn't believe that we subsidized a private failure. I still can't believe it. Do you know that Lenin said that after Capitalism we in the USA would have Fascism? I think we are post-capitalism no doubt about it.
One thing that is great about Moore and FOOD, INC is that each movie gives us alternatives and solutions. I believe in voting with wallet. I don't do any IRI activism, but I don't buy things from China when I can. They treat their citizens like trash and they enable the regime in Iran. It's difficult, but I try.
SALMON & TROUT: PERS66 Do me a big big big favour and please rent THE COVE. Realize that the crap burning in industrial plants (not just coal) is releasing mercury in the air. That mercury ends up in beautiful waters. I don't eat sea food. Mercury PPM is out of control and i'm really trying to avoid cancer.

by I Have a Crush on Alex Trebek on Sun Apr 04, 2010 07:20 AM PDTHowever, there are alternatives to meat packing plants. I'm not opposed to vegetarianism, but I'm not opposed to omnivore lifestyle either. There are more humane ways of being an omnivore. Non-meat packing plant beef is available and it's sustainable as well.

by John on Sun Apr 04, 2010 07:01 AM PDTEating dead animals is disgusting. If any of us were to see the inside of an abattoir or meat-packing plant we'd never let a morsel of dead animal pass between our lips ever again.
Red wine, Azadeh, and PERS dears!
by I Have a Crush on Alex Trebek on Sun Apr 04, 2010 07:00 AM PDTI think if everyone in the United States saw Food, Inc. and read the book associated with it, they would revolt!
Azadeh jan, there is access to cleaner and safer meat. The Industrial system has failed to provide basic nutrition. The government in the US must stop subsidizing crappy stuff (corn) and start subsidizing good stuff like broccolli and carrots! and organic! That's why organic and healthy food is more expensive than chips and soda.
Red wine, in the new year I wish you lots of health. You are on a good path. I think we all have to watch what we eat even if we are "healthy." Our bodies mask the truth well. Cancer is another major disease in the US along with obesity. The food is where the problem lies.
PERS: thank you for posting the synopsis! Eric Schlosser is also in the movie I think and he has done great work on illegal labor, drugs and black markets. The food industry is obviously tied to these shady dealings which is clear in FOOD, INC.
PERS66: Your reaction to meat in Iran is not surprising. The cows in Iran are not fed a corn diet. They are meat to eat herbs and grass! The content of their meat changes and so do we, when we disrupt this basic intent. I love love love beef. I won't lie. I am incapable of vegetarianism. I will always try and I won't give up. I don't eat a lot, but like you, I cheat.
Food Inc.
by PERS66 on Sun Apr 04, 2010 06:30 AM PDTThank you for sharing this post.
I strongly recommend for all to rent the movie In Food, Inc., you will never look at food, especially beef and chicken in the same way! //www.foodincmovie.com
Filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.
I started suffering from inflammatory arthritis in my early 20’s and it took me a lot of pain and suffering for years before finding out that eating animal products: Meat: beef, chicken and dairy products was a major contributor to the inflammation in my joints, I believe the main reason for this is all the hormones, chemicals and un natural stock feed that is used to fatten up and market the meat in mass production and a gaining short term profit.
As hard as I try to stay off meat, every now and then I will cheat and have a burger or some kabob or ghormeh sabzi made with mahicheh and ghalam, followed by 48 hours of stiffness and pain.
The interesting thing is when I went on a meat cheat during a visit to Iran I had kabob on several occasions and to my surprise experienced no negative side effects, no inflammation or pain; I think the reason is that in most parts of Iran the stock is still feeding on its natural/organic food source, green grass.
Please rent and see the movie if you get a chance.
Happy New Year ;)
Vegetarianism: best choice for humans and eco-system
by Azadeh Azad on Sun Apr 04, 2010 01:32 AM PDTI have been a vegetarian most of my adult life and I'm in perfect health. I always encourage people to at least try it for a month or two to see its positive effects on their body and mind (mood.)
Besides the fact that Canadian and American meat is full of anti-biotic and hormones that are harmful to the body and cause cancer and other illnesses, there is a lot of waste and inefficiency in the production of meat.
Animal protein production requires more than eight times as much fossil-fuel energy than production of plant protein while yielding animal protein that is only 1.4 times more nutritious for humans than the comparable amount of plant protein.
Also, according to many ecologists, if all the grain currently fed to livestock in the United States were consumed directly by people, the number of people who could be fed would be nearly 800 million.
Go veggie, y'all :-)
