End of last summer I had many long phone conversations with my cousin's children who visit family in Canada and also use the opportunity to improve their English language skills. This was Not the first time I realized how incompetent I am in communication. Especially when it comes to Persian colloquial. Generally and developmentally-speaking, younger people are just so good at letting you know how off you are! Don't you love that?! I just got this forwarded to me by one of those sweet kids with the title "Dear Moni, sorry but these are some of the things you don't know in Farsi!!!!" Then I open this long list of items off of HABIBMETALLICA (Who is he? But Thanks a bunch just the same HABIBMETALLICA JAN)... SOME of the expressions I don't know?! How many more are there?! What's up with all the exclamation marks Leili joon? (Notice per your request I have used caps for the source, I hope your filtershekan is functional these days so you can read your contribution to iranian.com) Love you, Moni

Perfect translations, Monda
by Ari Siletz on Sun Nov 22, 2009 11:36 AM PSTLooks like Farsi needs to coin a word that describes "hypocrite" better. Hafez's "chon be khalvat meeravand aan kar e deegar meekonand" proves that the concept is very precisely understood in our culture, but where's the very precise word or idiom? I sense the idiom should include the word "jelveh" or "zaaher." But "zaaher saaz" pulls more towards "con artist" than hypocrite. What's a hypocrite to do?
Ari, do you concur?

Dear Mr. Siletz
by Monda on Sat Nov 21, 2009 01:19 AM PSTThanks for your translation. Now I feel really flattered by your wishes! And in fact I do feel really Kool.
I would give that list a try. I'm more curious than capable really, when it comes to translating (especially for other people).

I never forget your beautiful sentiments. Please write more poems and do post them here. I will always be looking for them.
Also thank you again for that poem by whoever it was, as it really resonated with me deeply.
Thanks Monda Jan
by khaleh mosheh on Fri Nov 20, 2009 06:09 PM PSTfor the sensible advice- Shame I am not a sensible girl and unfortunately genetically programmed for hal pakhsh kardan.
Hopefully my search for a Casanova may be coming to an end- I have had an offer that I am finding difficult to refuse.. I can resist everything but temptation.
Have a most wonderful Birthday sis.

by Ari Siletz on Fri Nov 20, 2009 02:44 PM PSTkontor se sefri =3 digits on the electricity meter lining up to zeroes cyclically in time. Also, kiloometr shomar, but that refers to an entirely different kind of mileage. For example, sefr kilometry=virgin.
Haal pakhsh kardan=to make happy.
joft sheesh zadan= zowgh kardan.
Rafigh faabrik: dyed in the wool friend (original factory parts)
Kelaas gozashtan= tazaahor be bartari.
kool=cool.
Aabghoosht be baalaa: High class.
khod raa be kolang zadan= khod raa beh kooche ali chap zadan.
Jooshkaari=zits
Also, I recently got the mirror image problem in an email from a young Iranian-American asking for the Farsi equivalent of common English experssions. Some had me stumped (not on my watch=mageh man cheekaaram?). If you would like to give the list a try, let me know and I will post it in a comment here.

by Monda on Fri Nov 20, 2009 11:58 AM PSTI'm not that competent at reading people on the net - I have to see them really. You may range between 35-55?
Still, I notice even within 10 years much changes in the culture and the person's position within their own specific culture. And this is a global phenomenon. I'm dancing here and am bad at multi-tasking right now. Let's talk social psych Soon Ok?
Oh Man! I'm having such goot time here! :o))

میلادت فرخنده باد
MoorcheFri Nov 20, 2009 11:26 AM PST
Happy Birthday!
by Farnoosh on Fri Nov 20, 2009 10:27 AM PSTI am very interested in seeing the examples of new Persian talk. I leave you a link to Mehdi Soheili's book, Asrar-e-Magoo. I should forewarn you that there are some very dirty jokes in here. It might be a good reminder of a different kind of Persian talking a few decades ago. I take no responsibility for the content (!).

MPD, What is so special about being 35?
by Anahid Hojjati on Fri Nov 20, 2009 10:26 AM PSTMPD, what is so great about being 35? A relative of mine who is many years older than 35, put a comment on his facebook that he turned 35, I believe he was joking. So I replied that I remember holding him as a baby and marvelling at his cuteness. In reality, I don't remember such thing since he and I are almost same age. And I am definitely some years older than 35. So my question is why both he and you picked 35? what is so great about being 35?
