Airtight Sanctions, Collective Punishment, War Crimes

Airtight Sanctions, Collective Punishment, War Crimes

To give you a better idea of the mentality of the primary airtight sanctions / crippling sanctions advocates on Iran, I direct you to todays news about a recently published wikileaks cable on Israel's treatment of Gaza:

"Israel wanted to keep Gaza's economy "on the brink of collapse", according to a 2008 cable published by Aftenposten, the Norwegian newspaper that got a leak of the leaks.

A blockade was imposed on Gaza after Hamas came to power in the territory in July 2007. Israel officials told the US embasssy in Tel Aviv their intention was to keep the Gazan economy functioning at a low level.

["Israeli officials have confirmed to Embassy officials on multiple occasions that they intend to keep the Gazan economy functioning at the lowest level possible consistent with avoiding a humanitarian crisis ...

...
As part of their overall embargo plan against Gaza, Israeli officials have confirmed to econoffs [US embassy economic officials] on multiple occasions that they intend to keep the Gazan economy on the brink of collapse without quite pushing it over the edge"
]

Under the 1949 Geneva Conventions article 33, collective punishments are a war crime. Additional Protocol II of 1977 explicitly forbids collective punishment.

Is it really suprising that the officials and their cheerleaders here and abroad are the very same people who are advocating more or less the same sort of tactics, namely  airtight sanctions / total blockade of Iran? Their total disregard for the suffering of ordinary people is visible for all to see.

One does not need to look

by Bavafa on

One does not need to look only at the illegal and immoral blockade of Gaza to understand the depth of Israel war crimes, though it is a good example of it.

Much the same if they are given a half chance, they would love to implement the same tactics on Iranians. IRI is a criminal regime, no buts about that however a "crippling sanction" will only result in punishing Iranian people and strengthening IRI oppressive hand.

It IS about Iran as I've clearly explained at the end. It describes perfectly the mentality practiced by anti-Iranian politicians and their cheerleaders who call for collective punishment of an entire population in the hope to get rid of the regime. And when it does not work, they will use military action to acheive that goal .

I thought your blog was about Sanctions on Iran....

by Roozbeh_Gilani on

But apart from the picture and a brief first paragraph, the entire blog is dedicated to "Palistinians sufferings under Israel"

You might want to consider changing the title and picture appropriately.

"Personal business must yield to collective interest."

Palestinians are in an extremely tragic condition

by Aliafandi on

However,

In the case of Iran, sanction does not mean that a country will be isolated and then no one will deal with them and this will cause problems. The inventers of "Sanctions" already know the fact about what they are doing. 30 years of on+off sanction against Iran and during the periods of harshest sanctions. US had some 400 deals/year with Iran through third parties. Sanction means giving less and making more money from a country.

In the case of Palestinians, Hammas  and its existance made it easy for Israel to do what its doing. Israel had planned that these people would eventually give up after some 40-50 years and other Islamic countries would feel sympethatic and begin to take them in. Well No one wanted the burden of these Palestinians and Palestinians persistantly stood ground and did not budge. It seems that Israel's plan for allowing Hammas to take power so  that they could justify their behavior, did not work.

Just watch "Occupation 101" on Google video and see the tragedy on Gaza and West Bank. No human beings should be treated like how Israel treats the Palestinians.
