Takht-e Jamshid in trouble

At a time of hope, when President Barack Obama has commended our heritage, saying "The Iranian people are a great people, and Persian civilization is a great civilization," a court in Chicago is considering an attack on some of the most powerful symbols of this civilization.

Lawyers are attempting to seize and auction thousands of priceless artifacts from Takht-e-Jamshid. The Takht-e-Jamshid collection consists of over 10,000 clay tablets dating back to the Achaemenid Empire. Each tablet is a priceless treasure - a window into what was once the largest empire in the world. Under the careful eye of archaeologists from the University of Chicago, these tablets are providing a first-hand account of daily life in the Persian Empire 2,500 years ago.

For Matt Stolper, Professor of Assyriology at the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago, each tablet is a priceless treasure — a window into Persepolis.

Yet, for several lawyers, the invaluable pieces of Persian and world heritage are worth nothing more than what they could fetch in a fire sale.

After collecting only a fraction of a $412 million default judgment against Iran, lawyers representing American victims of a 1997 Hamas suicide bombing in Jerusalem set their eyes on the Persian artifacts. Their goal: seize and auction our cultural items like cheap items on ebay.

There can be no doubt that all acts of terrorism must be condemned and punished, but targeting the cultural heritage of an entire people is not justice.

"Imagine if the Russians laid claim to the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the original draft of the Gettysburg Address because they had a legal case against us," says Gil Stein, director of the Oriental Institute. "How would we feel?"

And this affront is not an isolated event, but rather represents yet another incident in a series of major cultural blows to Persian identity, heritage and pride, including the slanderous depiction of Persians in movies such as 300 and Not Without My Daughter.

This is not a political issue. This is a test of strength for our community. Are we, the Iranian-American community, capable of stepping up and taking action? Or are we going to let pieces of our heritage, identity and pride “end up on coffee tables around the country,” like one of the lawyers suggested?

By enlisting the help of a major law firm, NIAC has created an avenue to make your voice heard. Mayer Brown LLP, a top 10 international law firm, is submitting an amicus brief on behalf of NIAC and the Iranian-American community. But now it is in each of our hands to stop this affront to our rich Iranian heritage, because if we don’t, then who will?

We cannot afford to stand by silently as our culture is attacked. Under the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, the President has the authority to stop the seizure. Ask President Obama to intervene and prevent the symbols of our rich history and identity from being looted.

Take action NOW by asking President Obama and Attorney General Holder to prevent the auction of Persepolis artifacts.

what is wrong with idea of people who actually care and love art to buy these things and preserve them for the next generations?

The care and neglect of historical treasures in Iran particualry objects belonging to pre omatist invasion is horrifying! few months a go we found out an scripture dating to Hakhamaneshi period was destroyed in Kharg island. The island that is supposedly closed and protected!  list of neglects goes and on. Even if you had a regime that cared (which we don't) the level of appreciation for this kind of stuff is  low by general public. Let Europeans and Americans handle these stuff. They may not have thousends of years history but they sure know how to protect historical treasures.

Iranians in and out are United

by Abarmard on

If this goes through, I don't think it would be the end of it. There are a lot of heritage in the future than can be auctioned also. Is it the right thing to do? If the court says yes, they have opened a whole lot of doors. For instance, If something is "taken" from the Jewish museum, then it can be auctioned in Iran for the sake of the suffering Palestinians, or an American stolen goods could be auctioned for the death of the Iraqis.

I do agree that what comes around goes around. We must be careful what we label as legal. Iranians won't forget it.

*Dear Iranians, don't mind those hateful crowds. Let them be. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and opinions don't change anything. The only good lesson here is to know who is who. Personally I could care less for those whose informations are limited and/or have ill deeds against Iran. What else is new? they have always been and will always be.

NIAC is a way for us Iranians who care to unite. Interestingly enough ,those who are "promoting" the sale of ancient Iranian artifactsare also criticizing NIAC. That should give you the hint as what direction to take.

Isn't there a site for Zionist-dirty-actions-and-crimes-lovers site that you two could go to and actually enjoy the content? You disappear from this site whenever there is an international outrage against Zionists crimes. When majority of people in this site are passionately showing their disgust against Zionist crimes, you're nowhere to be found. Yet  you dare to come here and pour your hatred against Iranians, defending bunch of Jewish dirty lawyers trying to steal Iranian people's heritage?!

Can't you see that you clearly do not belong in this site? Or do you guys suffer a battered women syndrome type of mental problem who love to come here, attach your unwanted-selves to Iranians , a place where majority despises your ugly views?

Arson and a spoonful of water

by Fred on

As much as the Islamists/Anti-Semites and their likeminded lefty allies try to change the issue, the cause and effect stays unanswered.

The NIAC lobby and its conjoined twin CASMII lobby jump on the lets save the Iranian treasures bandwagon trying to illicitly solicit some badly needed legitimacy via titillating patriotic sentiments, all the while the culprit is bypassed.

It is as though one knows who the arsonist is, has witnessed him committing the same crime over and over and yet only asks for spoonful of water to be poured on the huge fires the criminal sets.

By refusing to name, condemn and publically ask for the punishment of the culprit and only redirecting attentions away from the criminal to the aftereffect of his crime the lobbies  facilitate the continuation of the crime spree and only fool those predisposed to such.

This is by the way why I have called Iranians degenerates.

Good luck getting any Iranians' support with that attitude.

I don't know what Khamenei said and I don't care. This is about the artifacts being auctioned off and you are just wasting time with irrelevant BS.

Q..

by Parthian on

Your nonsense analogy tells a lot about the way you think. George Bush did not want to destroy Washington's Jefferson memorial. This is not some nutjob in a country, this is the dictator, supreme leader of a country, going into the heart, and soul of Iran, and by the way insulting every Iranian's ancestor. How degenerate are those who diminish this issue. I suggest you read the transcript of the speech or find the video. This is not about the destruction of Persepolis, this is about disdain for being Iranian. Don't compare America, or anyone else, as you advice others, don't mix GW with Iran. Tell us what you think about what Khamenei said?

This is by the way why I have called Iranians degenerates. Almost all of Iran is plagued by degenerosity of moral, ethics, and culture. The best proof is what we saw Wednesday morning at Khamenei's speech. Not one person inside of Iran has opposed it, not one person has objected. Iran, what a lost cause....

Q

Sarzamine man and other pseudo nationalists,

by Q on

NIAC has done a lot for the Iranian American community which has many interests. I know people working on anything other than regime change is not acceptable for you and many of your angry friends.

If you want to toppling the regime without doing any work yourself, get out your best begging hat, and stand in the line behind about 80 other "Iranians" hoping for "support" from America or the West. If you do want to work, then go do that. Talk is cheap.

If you think we can't affect anything, then why are you losing sleep over this issue? Go start your revolution. Best of luck to you.

Iran is not Taliban. There are nutbags in every country. John Bolton said he wanted to destroy the UN. George Bush oversaw the LOOTING of priceless Iraqi artifacts, even older than Iran's. If IRI wanted to Bulldoze Persepolis it would have done so sometime in the past 30 years. Besides the collection don't have to leave the US, just not be AUCTIONED OFF.

SM, what the hell is this?

so can you be kind and let some few I.R's opposition voice their concern in small venue like this website or do you want to shut everybody up in here too, like you did to 70,000 million Iranian ??

So voice your F-ING concern! Who the hell is stopping you? Write your own articles, start your own organizations and lobby groups. Your voice is all we have had for much of the past 3 decades. NIAC is a refreshing change from the same old tired Tehrangeles "opposition" which has accomplished NOTHING.

It is you who have a problem with alternative voices and feel like you have to put them down. Who is stopping you from voicing your concerns? Is the only concern you have NIAC?

If you're angry at the Iranian government for other purposes, don't drag this issue into your anger. Don't make LAME excuses.

You're only making it clear that you are USING IRAN'S HERITAGE FOR YOUR NARROW AND SHORTSIGHTED POLITICAL PURPOSES.

As I said 1000 times, the best thing you guys can do for Iranian is TO LEAVE THEM ALONE, you guys have damaged us more than U.S, Israel, Iraq, IR, China, Korea, India,.... and the REST OF THE WORLD> I have never ever seen anything from your organization which shows your are with Iranian PEOPLE, you have never tried to solve or indicate the real problem that majority of Iranian have (I.R) but rather tried many times to solve the I.R's problems, the only thing you guys are the best is bashing U.S and Israel from bam to sham.

@Vanik : Did you know by doing nothing, you help Iranian more than barking for I.R ?? do you have difficulty to understand this ??

XerXes :I do not know what your problem is, you guys already are in power in Iran, robbing all Iran's wealth and power, so can you be kind and let some few I.R's opposition voice their concern in small venue like this website or do you want to shut everybody up in here too, like you did to 70,000 million Iranian ??

Taliban

by Iranyvaliazad on

As Taliban, followers of islam, showed how islam honors, protects and safeguards historical artifacts and heritage by dynamiting them (Buddha statues) and sledge hammering them into unrecognized pieces (Kabul museum), they have and will show the same respect to Iranian heritage once they get their hands on them.  Wasn’t ayatooleh Meshkini who wanted to bulldoze Takht-e-Jamshid, not once but twice.  Isn’t the same IRI who despite international outcry, built a dam so close to historical sites that those sites will be destroyed, maybe not in our lifetime, but in not too far distant time.

Please take your name callings back to your masjed and think how you can protect what is left in Iran from hands of moslems … that is if you care … if not continue with your name callings.

it may be over your head, but Fred only makes comments just so he can put "NIAC" and "lobby" in the same sentence. that's the lie, niac is not a lobby, it's not conjoined, it's not about internal politics in Iran as all its members live in the us. and what does any of what fred said have to do with this particular case? how does attacking the IRI help these artifacts? it doesn't but fred doesn't care about these things. he just wants to make his accusations.

Fred wants to hurt niac's image. maybe if this was his first time, he would be given some slack, but he's far too obvious for everyone. everyone knows why, everyone knows who... it's not working. i was now glad to clue you in, since you didn't know.

News... too true. I agree.

News...

too true. I agree. Returning these items will only jeopardize their existence.

Since when the IRI cares about Persian heritage?? For all intent and purposes, the IRI acts very much in the interest of political Islam and NOT Iran.
The hypocrisy is that the mullahs in charge of the country have done more to damage Persian culture and historic past than the rest of the world could ever do.

The leader of Islamic Republic of Iran, on Wednesday morning and during a gathering with Fars province’s governor and authorities declared that Persepolis or Takht-e-Jamshid is the symbol of tyranny and that it belongs to Iran’s pre Islamic Revolution’s tyrannical rulers and it’s merely a symbol of despotism of the past and it’s a throne of hatred for all true Iranian Moslems who will have to gaze upon its site! If at any point there were any doubts about Islamic Republic’s disdain for Iranians, their culture and their heritage, this should now be adequate proof.Additionally, Khamenei said that the achievements, art and literature of Iran only came to matter after the advent of Islam and Iranians' conversion to the good religion!"

Destruction of Iranian heritage has been a continuous occupation of the Islamic regime since its beginning. Ayatollah Sadegh Khalkhali at the beginnings of the 1979 revolution traveled with bulldozers to flatten Persepolis where ruins of the 2500 year old administrative capital of the Achamenian dynasty sits. Locals stopped his bulldozers by laying down on their path, until the governor of the province was able to convince Khalkhali to leave without damaging the treasures. Now Ahmadinejad is planning to go ahead with the systematic destruction of one of civilized world's first administrative sites by by flooding a dam under the pretense of creating electricity for industry. This is where the first postal system (//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mail) was conceived and where the first human rights charter was written.(//www.savepasargad.com/aa.from%20091806/destr...)
Following the footsteps of Taliban, The un-Iranian government of Islamic Republic is set to destroy a major part of humankind's cultural heritage:See below:
//www.savepasargad.com/european_languages.htm

ISNA has since removed/deleted that story (Khameni's Shiraz visit) from its site and instead you will see this:

But...

by News... (not verified) on

Ayatollah Khamenei in his last visit to Shiraz criticized affection of the people to Persepolis, saying that it was a symbol of dictatorship and injustice. He continued that IRI had not destroyed Takhte-Jamishid only because some had misplaced affection towards it, which was a place representing "kaafars".

In a country whose supreme leader brags about destroying iran's heritage, return of iranian heritage to iran is unwise and in danger of destraction. Maybe it is best for these artifacts to be sold to people who would care and safeguard them rather than returning them to undeserving criminal mullas in iran.

Just a reminder that Ayatollah Khalkhali ordered destruction of a precious collection of pre-islamic coins, calling them "khar-mohreh", after the revolution. Do we want the same to happen to these artifacts by Farsi-speaking anti-iranians occupying iran?

for one thing... this has already been done to death.  it's old news.  and what does this have to do with zions or jews?  NOTHING.  fred sincerely appreciated the efforts in protecting these artifacts.  isn't that what it's all about?  he simply put forth a suggestion that NIAC spend a little critical time on the regime currently in power in iran.  you know... the IRI.  the IRI who cares far less for iranian cultural preservation than the rest of the world.

anon8.  please exhibit for us one LIE that fred has perpetrated.  just one will do.  what "agenda" is he serving by denouncing the IRI?  yours?

Cause and effect

by Fred on

NIAC lobbyist in part says: “There can be no doubt that all acts of terrorism must be condemned and punished, but targeting the cultural heritage of an entire people is not justice.”

Could not agree more with the NIAC lobby’s official position and highly commend it for doing so.

Since the NIAC lobby and its conjoined twin, CASMII lobby are so principled-would they mind producing the last such official condemnation of the Islamist republic?

Would the lobbies be willing to publically ask for the punishment of the officials of the Islamist republic involved in domestic and international terrorism?

Would the lobbies be willing to explain in detail the Islamist republic’s planning and bankrolling of the cases that has put Iranian treasures in jeopardy?

Go after the cause and not just its effect!
