Today I learned from my friends in Iran that the seven imprisoned Bahai leaders are under trial in Tehran at this time. Their trial is being held in closed court sessions and their lawyer, Dr. Shirin Ebadi, has not been permitted to meet with any of them, have access to their files, or attend their trial.
CNN reported yesterday: "The seven -- six arrested on May 14, 2008, and another arrested in March 2008 -- have been charged with espionage for Israel, propaganda against Iran, and "insulting religious sanctities," an Iranian deputy prosecutor said in February. Now Baha'i officials say families of those imprisoned have been told that the seven may face the charge of "spreading of corruption on Earth," a count that the group says "carries the threat of death" under Iran's penal code."
Considering the severe new charges announced against the seven men and women, I am almost certain the new charges have been made in preparation for their imminent execution.
As I have written before, and as has been evident in many similar cases, inernational pressure on IRI authorities has worked toward release or softer sentences for many persecuted for their beliefs and conscience in Iran. I would like to urge you all to read up on the matter and to do whatever you can to bring this matter to international attention. Please forward articles and news and sign pettitions, write letters and keep active in trying to save these prisoners safe and alive.
A few minutes of your time could quite possibly make a difference between life and death for Bahai leaders in Iran.

Shaming Iran
by 11101932 (not verified) on Sun May 17, 2009 11:37 AM PDTThe mullahs ruling (ruining) Iran seem determined to do all they can to shame this noble nation, its heritage, and its image.
The mullahs shrewdly capitalize on the Iranian people's patriotism to blame everything they can think of on the U.S.,Israel, and other foreign entities.
For added insurance, the mullahs bill themselves as champions of the true Islam and defender of its ideals. Hence, they need to show the good-hearted, yet simple-minded, Masses of Muslims that they are indeed battling internally against the enemies of the faith. Baha'is are perfect for the mullahs' devious scheme. Some 300,000 Baha'is are readily available in just about every sizable community and the locals' frustrations can be easily steered against this peaceful co-suffering Iranian minority.
What is evident and cannot escape attention is the ruthlessness of this gang of self-serving tyrants. They have basically decimated tens of thousands of their own co-coreligionists who dared to voice their criticism of the regime. They have made Iran a true police state, have forced all those who can flee to leave their homeland, and are busily lining their pockets with bribes, extortion and sweetheart deals.
Arresting Baha'is, imprisoning and torturing them keeps the masses distracted and even serves as a sort of justification for their deadly corrupt misrule.
The way these dreadful mullahs administer justice in close trials and without due process makes mockery of justice. I wonder if these mullahs and their mercenaries ever think of the day that they might be subjected to the same brutal treatment by another set of usurpers or hopefully taken to account by a real justice system that grants them a full and open trials.
We pray for the day that Iran, deeply beloved by the Baha'is as the birthplace of Zoroaster and Baha'u'llah, will once again assume its honorable place among the tolerant and freedom-loving nations.
