Delara Darabi, the young woman who had allegedly committed a murder under the age of 18 and who had received an unfair trial had to be hung in violation of international laws to which Iran has been a signatory. With all the international attention on her case, Delara had to be hung, just as all the other new negative rhetoric from Iranian officials have had to be heightened since the Obama olive branch was extended in late March.
Islamic Republic of Iran is scared shitless of the prospects of negotiations with US and ending Iran’s self-imposed isolation of the past 30 years. Crackdowns on ordinary citizens, students, bloggers, union activists, and teachers have also increased over the past few months to send the message worldwide that IRI is not prepared to talk peace with anyone, for its very existence has thrived and lasted on this isolation. IRI’s isolation from the rest of the world has given it a free pass to mistreat its citizens inside Iran and to violate their human rights on a daily basis without any accountability to the rest of the world. Ending the isolation would seriously jeopardize the very existence of an ideological state which has made 70 million Iranians’ daily lives and thoughts its business to scrutinize, monitor, and control.
In addition to the ideological propaganda sent Iranian people’s way 24/7 from radio, television, school, textbook, and podium, entire organizations have been established and nurtured to talk hate and fear about the rest of the world to Iranian people. IRI’s rejoining the world would require dismantling tens of huge, multi-thousand employee organizations such as the paramilitary Basij and the Islamic Propaganda Organization, and a concentrated cultural re-engineering of what has been in progress over the past three decades. It is simply not possible to do any of that reform in a short period of time, something that arguably could have been in place had Khatami’s earlier attempts at reforms not been thwarted by conservative hardliners such as Ali Khamenei himself.
Islamic Republic of Iran has passed any chances of reform and change in order to remain isolated to guarantee its very survival. Delara’s execution is just another message to the world that IRI is incapable of change and reform and it will never re-join the international realm of peaceful co-existence with other countries.
Most unfortunately, with all the international attention Delara Darabi’s case received, her execution was the shortest, fastest, and most effective way for Islamic Republic of Iran to let the rest of the world know it has no intention of negotiating anything with anyone.
My heart weeps for the youth and talent which had to be sacrificed to send the ominous message to the world.

by rosie is roxy is roshan on Tue May 05, 2009 10:31 AM PDTKaveh I've had so many discussions about this point the past few days and one of the more effective ways I've found of putting it is even more disturbing but perhaps clearer:
Delara's father turned her in to the IRI criminal "justice" ssstem in good faith. IRI violated its own laws (and surely the laws of any place that can realistically be said to have a government and not a gang in 2009) by not only not giving the legal 48 hour notice to the sentenced and kin before the eexectuion, but by giving no notice atall. Delara was given no notice and was allowed to call her parents immediately before her hanging. she told them, help me, and an authority told them, we are going to killy our daughter and you can't do anything to stop it. she died completely alone. Her fther has been hospitalized ever siince.
To make ANY MENTION WHATSOEVER of guilt or innocence or in particular fair trial is more than irrelevant under such ciriumstances. it is borderline insane.
Somehow or other I keep thinking of al-Bashir kicking out aid organizations feeding and providing medical care for two million peole from Sudan as protest that he was indicted fro crimes against humanity. Not excactly the same, but similar logic.
No offense meant to anyone but I'm just trying to get people to see it like it is. Anyone who speaks a single solitary word of defense of IRi in this or even reproach of Delara at this point is condoning the rule of Iran by ruthless lawlessness. Implicitly.
Ask the dead blogger and the hundred beaten and arrested May Day celebrants in Tehran and the students of Amir kabir put in isolation for weeks in Evin with virtually no contact with the outside world what they think.

by Kaveh Nouraee on Mon May 04, 2009 09:36 AM PDTEven though the so-called "criminal justice system" in Iran is suspect at best, the issue here is not Delara's guilt or innocence.
The issue is that even if she were caught in the act and was covered from head to toe in the victim's blood, she was still under 18 at the time, which means capital punishment may not be considered.
We Must Be United Against ANY Injustice.
by faryarm on Sat May 02, 2009 11:10 AM PDTWe Must Be United Against ANY Injustice;
I have been reading and hearing the tragic reports about Delara;
Her last days and her parent's desperate attempts to appeal to the inhuman prosecutor....
This Injustice will not end, until all fair minded people truly unite and raise their voices. It is only through this kind of indiscriminate Universal solidarity amongst Iranians that can appeal to the Conscience of the rest of the world.
in 1983 A group of Canadian Singers and Artists participated in this music Video, a song written by Doug Cameron to tell the story of Mona;
A Powerful expression of unity between East and West.
Mona and Delara were of similar age and had so much hope and promise..

by proud irooni (not verified) on Sat May 02, 2009 09:26 AM PDTOver 120000 people have been executed for their beliefs alone in Iran, the newest being Delara. This regime strives on suppression and executions; they do not understand the language of reason! you can't negotiate with such inhumane bastards who don't have an ounce of humanity in them.
Interestingly, I read an article today which spoke of the state of delara's family this morning, and the fact that she had called her parents and told them that they are going to be hanging me and I see the rope in front of me now.... Ironically, tomorrow marks the 27th anniversary of the brutal killing of 60 people across Tehran who's houses were raided in early morning hours of May 2nd. One of those killed was Mahin Khiabani, she was 5 months pregnant and as their house was being raided she called her mother and told her that she would be killed in a few minutes and had called to say her farewells.
May they all rest in peace.
As someone who has lost her father to this ruthless regime in 1988, I would like to extend my condolences to the family of Delara, I would also like them to know that one day we will make this regime pay for all the crimes they have committed against humanity, and that day is not far! We shall overcome and we will bring freedom and democracy to our beloved land, it all just depends on how much responsibility we are willing to take and how much of a sacrifice we are willing to make, because no one will hand us freedom in a silver platter.

SHE WAS NOT INNOCENT دلارا بیگناه نبود
bEHNAM G (not verified)Sat May 02, 2009 05:11 AM PDT
I was very saddened by Delara's execution; but it is misguided to say that she was innocent.
There are two possibilities: (1) either she killed the woman, or (2) she was present with her boyfriend while he killed her.
In the latter case, she was either a willing participant or not. If she were reluctant, she should have informed the police about the murder--which she did not. Not only did she not inform the police, she says she lied to them to protect the killer. Well then, when was she telling the truth: The first time (when she confessed to murder) or now? If she lied the first time to protect her boyfriend, how do we now she is not lying now to protect herself?
Her actions make her ONE of these three things:
(1) murderer, but if not that then:
(2) accomplice to murder, but if not that then:
(3) accessory after the fact (for protecting the actual killer by not informing the police and by lying)
So, she bears at least some of the responsibility for murder.
Nevertheless, I think they shouldn't have executed her.

by rosie is roxy is roshan on Sat May 02, 2009 01:00 AM PDTabsolutely, it began with Obama's taking office. And it's been orchestrated like one big gruesone play with Iran as the stage and the world as the audience.
I wrote this originally for a thread on Roxana two days before Delara's SCHEDULED execution. IRoxana's been sentenced THaT DAY. Theater. But I simply could not get them to pay attention to Delara...anyway, then I blogged it.

I'm also glad you brought up the unions. I had some things to say about that that were particularly disturbing to me as you'll see, and got more and more disturbing as the "Left" so-called would not participate on the thread.

What I mean is they're perverting language, talking about anti-Colonialism and anti-Capital, but you can't be those things if you don't care about labor. So they're..something else..and they're doing..something else..and it isn't helpful at all. And I divorced myself from them the weekend that blog was featured.

by anonymous fish on Fri May 01, 2009 11:30 AM PDTas well we all are. but exactly what do you think the US could have done? negotiated to keep this from happening? are you serious? the iranian people didn't want this to happen and the regime doesn't listen to them! you expect the unholy mullahs to NEGOTIATE with the US? the accelerating disintegration of HUMANITY is laid at the feet of the IRI... period. please don't make this a global failure.
however, i agree that God will accept her with open arms. innocent or not.
kaveh. i am as outraged as you. such passive words... untimely/unjust/chaotic...to describe this evil act. surely there are better words to describe this despicable COWARDLY regime.
i'm sure i can find some of them among the description of the jews here on iranian.com.

I'm So Enraged Right Now
by Kaveh Nouraee on Fri May 01, 2009 10:54 AM PDTNot just at the IR bastards who have done this, but at those who try and rationalize matters, saying that "change will come slowly" or something similar.
The IR is going through a chaotic time? F**k them. All of them. Let the chaos result in their final downfall and their descent into either hell or some other abyss from which they'll never return.
How many times must you be bitten by these snakes before you finally realize that you cannot reason with them? 30 years of having our asses kicked isn't enough?

by Grieving Human (not verified) on Fri May 01, 2009 09:46 AM PDTThis is a tragedy of the worst kind. I keep thinking that maybe, just maybe if the USA and their so called friends had not thrown away their "moral authority" on the issue of human rights, they could have negotiated to keep this from happening. Delara is yet another victim in the accelerating disintegration of Humanity. May her God accept her with open arms as the innocent that she was.
