I have found a great place to learn Azeri! Ana Dili Azerbaijani blogs aim to teach Persian speakers how to speak Azeri. If you have a few minutes, take a look for yourself and see if this is of interest to you. The general idea is explained on this page, and this is the address for the blogs:
There have been eight lessons so far, with some grammar and some conversation lessons. There is also a growing Azeri to Farsi dictionary available on the site. I hope you find this useful. Təşakkür edirəm and yashasin Azerbaijan! Some day, I hope to be able to understand what these words by the legendary Rashid Behbudov mean without help:

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Tue Dec 15, 2009 10:43 AM PSTVery good points. We know what happens right here in the US. The kids who don't know English have two choices:
1) Immersion. These people quickly learn English and joing the regular society. They are able to get the same jobs as anyone else and generally prosper.
2) Instruction in their native languages. They become isolated and have trouble joining the society. They have a difficult time getting into top colleges without quotas. When it is time to get a job they are unable to compete. So they form a lower class getting jobs no one else wants.
The real racism is condemning a group to inferior jobs for generations because they don't speak the majority language. All of us had to learn English. I challange anyone to go get a decent job in USA without knowing English. The same applies to Iran and Persian.
The other very real danger is that of separatism and division. Without a language to unite a people it becomes more difficult to have a nation. Fortunately for us we have3000+ years of history. Nevertheless having a unifying language is a good thing.
Of course learning more languages is fine. But we need to know at least the main national language of a nation. In US it is English and in Iran it is Persian. Unfortunately the PC are attacking on both fronts to the detriment of both nations.
Persian too!
by Sohraby on Tue Dec 15, 2009 10:34 AM PSTWhat a great idea that our neighbors learn persian so they can talk with us insead of fight with us. But they don't do it, because they are racist and very intolerance.
It is anybody's business, because we are the members of a
by Sohraby on Sat Dec 19, 2009 06:55 PM PSTsociety. Lets' assume that you are a teacher and have some students in your class which happened to be from different backgrounds with different languages or dialects. Some of them speak in turkish, some in Persian, some in English, some in Arabic etc. What would you do if each of them decide to speak and learn in his/her own language? How should your students communicate with each other if they don't speak a common language? can the lack of communication tools (the comcmon language) lead to ethnic tension? You bet. And how can you teach them your knowledge as a teacher when you don't speak and understand their language? See, my friend it is your business what they speak. It is the same with the whole society which is a much bigger classroom with more sutdents and more teachers.
If you want to speak a language that is your choice, go ahead and do so, just find a place where people share the same language with you in order to be able to communicate with them. I hope you know what a khar to khar world is, a world with no rules, regulation, law.....
Once again Azari
by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Tue Dec 15, 2009 10:24 AM PSTThe original Azari language was Persian. Why don't folks read Kasravis' book? I am not saying anyone should be forced to learn it but it helps to know history. How do you people think Turkish became the language of Azarbayejan?
I think people should learn whatever languages they want. But history cannot be changed. The facts are that the original Azari language was Persian.
As for racism; I am really tired of hearing this charge. Anyone who so much as dares honor their culture is called racist. Whether they be Swiss or Persian. FYI: my mother is "Azeri" and proudly speaks Persian. The same for my grandfather and so on. My grandfather born and raised in Azarbayejan never referred to himself as Azari. He made it clear he was Persian. I am not ashamed of what I am and will not be bullied into Political Correctness.
Intolerance and racism
by IRANdokht on Tue Dec 15, 2009 09:50 AM PSTI shudder at the thought of this intolerant racist group of Iranians getting to any kind of power position. You think Hitler was bad? wait until you see the Pure-Persian version of it. They're not in any power now and they're dictating others what to say and how to think...
scary stuff!
Sadra jan thanks for sharing. My mom is not azari, but she speaks the language and taught us that the more languages we know, the more people we relate to. The basic steps to avoid ignorant intolerance.

Arabic too!
by Anonymous8 on Tue Dec 15, 2009 09:46 AM PSTwhat a great idea to learn languages of our neighbors so we can talk with them instead of fight with them. good arabic learning site //www.learnarabiconline.com/how-to-learn-arabic.shtml thank you!
None of anybody's business
by Jahanshah Javid on Tue Dec 15, 2009 09:32 AM PSTWho are we to tell anyone what they should speak?
If I want to speak a language that is my choice.
If you want to force me to speak something else, that's a different story.
I agree with ramin parsa and mani
by Sohraby on Tue Dec 15, 2009 02:00 PM PSTWhat is the benefit of learning Turkic language? Do they have an advanced culture, poetry, scientific books etc.
Is turkic an iranian language/dialect ? NO. Are Azeris turkish people? NO. Then, why the hell learning the turkic language?
JJ, are you serious? Is advocating Persian (saving Persian language from arabization or turkification) in your eyes advocating ethnic cleaning? Is turkic or arabic language in danger of extinction? How many people all around the world speak in turkic or in arabic? How many people speak in Persian????? Don't get emotional man. What you wrote is an absolute nonsense < of course with all due respect>. Just don't block my account, please, I'm just sharing my opinion with others .
As an Iranian who speaks in Persian, I would respect and learn the language of Germans, Americans, French people, if I decide to live in their countries!!!!. And I would not be upset if they ask me not to speak in Persian because it is their land and I came to their land and not vice versa !!! . I hope you get the point.
JJ, the problem is that you haven't been in Iran for many years and your information is limited in what you read and hear about Iran!!!!
PS: Isn't censorship/ blocking user accounts advocating dictatorship?
The real Azeri
by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Tue Dec 15, 2009 08:35 AM PSTThe real Azeri language was researched by Ahmad Kasravi. Mr Kasravi wrote a whole book about it. The name of the book is: "Azari ya zabaneh bastaneh Azarbayejan". You may purchace it from Amazon but it is in Persian.
//www.amazon.com/bastan-i-Azarbaygan-nam%1Aha...
I highly recommend it to Iranians. It is definitive proof that the current imposed "Turkish" language is not the real heritage of Azarbayejan. As for learning it: I would love to. We need to understand our heritage and not give in to Arabs; Turks or Mongols.
In fact I encourage all Iranians to read works of Ahmad Kasravi. He was a true Iranian with a stellar mind and a real sense of patriotism. Unfortunately he was murdered by fanatics in 1946 but not before he managed to publish much work.
Long live real Azarbayejan aka Atrpatakan and the home of Rostam Farrokhzad.

More languages the better
by Jahanshah Javid on Tue Dec 15, 2009 07:39 AM PSTThank you for this post. Not only Azaris, but all ethnic groups in Iran (or anywhere else) have every right to learn, speak and use their language in any way they wish.
Those advocating Persian only for all ethnic groups in Iran are directly or indirectly advocating ethnic cleaning, which is neither desirable for a multi-ethnic society like ours, nor is it right or possible (even with the use of force).
I would like to know how "Persians" would feel if the U.S., France, Germany or any other country with a sizable Iranian population banned or discouraged teaching any language other than English, French, German or whatever the majority language may be. That would mean no Persian, no Azari, no Arabic, no Spanish, no Hindi, no Japanese... nothing but what the majority imposes.
A Better Idea
by mani_9911 on Tue Dec 15, 2009 06:42 AM PSTHow about a web page to teach the great Azeri population their mother language of Persian (instead of the foriegn Azeri language forced on these ethnically Persian population over the past centuries).
This is great!
by Monda on Tue Dec 15, 2009 05:44 AM PSTThanks for the post.
This is an insane idea!
by ramin parsa on Tue Dec 15, 2009 05:22 AM PSTWhy the hell would any proud Iranian man or woman want to learn a Mongol/Turk language like Azeri? The great people of Azarbaijan are Iranians, first and foremost, and used to speak a Persian language until the bloody Mongol invasion.
Just as I don't like to promote the leftover effects of the Arab invasion (I have no inclination to learn Arabic), I think this is a really ridiculous idea. We should be encouraging our Azari brothers and sisters to drop their Mongol/Turkic language and finally go back to speaking their hereditary Persian dialect.
Language is identity. If you speak Arabic, you're deemed an Arab. If you speak a Turkic language, then you're considered a Turk. Need I say more?
Thank you soooo much
by Princess on Tue Dec 15, 2009 04:48 AM PST... for sharing this. I have been looking for something like this for years!
