Today is the first anniversary of last year's presidential elections. In the aftermath of the spontaneous protests against elections fraud, dozens of Iranians lost their lives to the brutal crackdown of military forces on unarmed citizens, close to five thousand were arrested and imprisoned, several received death sentences and at least two people were executed.
Over the past year, Iran has increasingly turned into a military state. Widespread and systematic violations of human rights on Iran's streets, on university campuses, at work places, at homes, inside prison cells, and even in cemeteries have become the order of the day. The Islamic Republic of Iran is the worst prisoner of journalists, students, and activists.
The Iranian nation have embarked upon a deliberate and wise civil disobedience campaign against their rulers whose endless cruelty has scarred the nation deeply, without any attempts to reconcile, to explain, or to hold any of the dozens of commanders, judges, ministers, and other authorities accountable for their crimes.
For several months there has been talk of an anniversary protest to mark one year of brutal suppression in Iran. That anniversary is here. Opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Karroubi's efforts to secure a permit for the June 12th protests were not successful. They have called off the protest walk which was proposed to take place between Imam Hossein and Azadi Squares. Despite public announcement of the cancellation, the chatter on blogs, Twitter, and internet is that there will be protests on June 12th.
In the absence of official media who should be reporting on the developments in Iran, we will have to rely on unofficial, underground, or citizen reports out of Iran about what is happening there. Please join me in reporting what we can find out to the community. Please help get the voices of Iranians out of Iran. Remember, we are the media.

Hillary Rodham Clinton - June 12, 2010
//www.state.gov/secretary/rm/2010/06/143033.h...
"When the Iranian people determined last year that their government
had denied them their right to free and fair elections, thousands of
Iranian citizens poured into the streets to protest peacefully. The
Iranian authorities responded to their citizens’ call for
accountability and transparency with violence, arbitrary detentions,
dubious trials, and intimidation. One year later, many political
prisoners continue to suffer in jail, some facing death sentences for
expressing their opinions. Other civil society activists in Iran are
not in prison, but they face other forms of persecution. Over the past
year, many of Iran’s most accomplished journalists, academics, and
activists felt they had no choice but to leave their homeland.
The
Iranian government’s denial of the fundamental freedoms and rights
accorded to its citizens in the Iranian constitution and international
treaties to which Iran is a party has drawn broad international
condemnation. As President Obama said when he accepted the Nobel Peace
Prize, it is the responsibility of all free people and free nations to
stand with peaceful reform movements seeking the rights that are our
common birthright.
The United States once again calls on the
leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran to meet their obligations to
their own people and to the international community by respecting the
rights and dignity of their citizens and by fully upholding Iran’s
international obligations. We also call for the immediate release of
all imprisoned human rights defenders, including Shiva Nazar Ahari,
Narges Mohammadi, Emad Baghi, Kouhyar Goudarzi, Bahareh Hedayat, Milad
Asadi, and Mahboubeh Karami. We ask the Iranian authorities to release
the three American hikers, detained without charge for almost a year,
and to provide information on the status of Mr. Robert Levinson, who
disappeared in Iran in 2007.
The United States reaffirms its
commitment to engage with Iran on all issues in pursuit of a negotiated
diplomatic resolution, on the basis of mutual respect and mutual
interests. But we also will continue to speak out in defense of basic
human liberties and in support of those around the world who seek to
exercise their universal rights."

Hi Majid!
by Shifteh Ansari on Sun Jun 13, 2010 12:34 AM PDTAnd thanks again everyone!
This is an interesting blog not just about what happened today, but about how young Iranians are thinking these days. This is an excerpt:

all, it was a long and glorious day
by oktaby on Sat Jun 12, 2010 11:43 PM PDTWish I could do more but was busy with physical protests today.
I saw very hopeful signs of the strength of this movement in ways that won't fit here but I will blog about. I sent videos of protests in SF today to jj but what I can say is every sign I see shows a root that is growing and getting stronger. Masih Alinejad said it best last year: "the fear has been transferred from the body of Iranian society to the body of the islamic regime".
There were hundreds of small and large protests around the world. Some as as simple as a few friends with bunch of signs. Others were large gathering. In SF today the 2KM long scroll was in full display and all I can say is I'm very proud of Iranians today.
The Iranians inside Iran saw today that Iranians around the world stand with them. We are too ancient and too proud to be brought down by a bunch of criminal thugs. We will throw this thugs out, sooner than most think. One big spark will end this regime and that spark won't have bells around its neck and won't care or need someone issuing orders for or against it. Today the movement walked passed the essence of this regime and signs of that will become visible very soon.
Shifteh Banoo, and everyone else, thanks for keeping this going. Keeps your heads high.

The "Delusion" Of Security Through Oppression ...
by R2-D2 on Sat Jun 12, 2010 09:51 PM PDTIf there is one lesson that the Mullahs have yet to learn, then that would be, that for a while, through oppression, subjugation, violence, and even torture, they may be able to control the People - However, if they are a student of History, then they should know that there is a clear pattern from fallen regimes of the past, that Ultimately, all of that will lead to naught, and that the regime Will Collapse From Within!
Let's Not Forget The Great Soviet Empire - This so-called Islamic Republic is nothing but a joke compared to the might of the Soviet Union - Remember, but only twenty (20) years ago, it was handed over into the dust bin of History, just as other oppressive regimes have been!
In our Beloved Iran, close to 2/3 of the population is under 30 years of age - All throughout their lives, they have seen absolutely nothing else but the repression that this regime has subjected them to - Does anyone honestly believe that our Youth are going to put up with this!
What I'm Trying To Say Is This: These Mullahs And Their Co-horts Are Going Against The Tide Of History! - Which Is In The Direction Of More Liberty, Freedom, And Democracy! If These Mullahs Are Half As Smart As Mollanasredin's Donkey, Then They Would Realize That Reality, And Treat The Iranian People Accordingly - If They Don't, Then There Is No Question In My Mind That In Due Course, They Will Be Subjected To The Full Force Of The Wrath Of The Iranian People, With Its Ultimate Consequences!
It's Really Not That Complicated - Not Even For These Mullahs :) - !

CNN: What gives you hope that the Green Movement will succeed?
Karrubi: The strength of this movement is the participation of diverse layers of society. The key to the success of this movement is the awareness of the people, especially the youth and the women who are in the forefront of this movement, and the determination of people to go after their rights. The true leaders of this movement are the people, not us. There are hard days ahead but the path is clear and the future belongs to the people.

LalehGillaniSat Jun 12, 2010 07:48 PM PDT
