Persepolis tablets have been caught in the middle of a fight. A gang of opportunists want to steal them to "pay" for supposed damages by IR. It is like confiscating the Statue of Liberty to pay for downing the Iranian Jet. However a recent court decsision has given some relief.
Like it or not NIAC has been active in saving them. I don't want to turn this into a NIAC bashing blog. Please stick to the subject.

Congratulation 2 all Iranians & those who care deeply about Iran
by Bavafa on Wed Mar 30, 2011 10:17 AM PDTThis news indeed is a relief, albeit it may not be the end of it, that greed and opportunistic have found a ripe atmosphere to loot another nation's treasure. Iran's treasure belongs to Iran and Iranians and court ought not to legalize theft and looting of other nation's treasure.
Thanks VPK for writing about this

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Wed Mar 30, 2011 08:48 AM PDTI would phrase it differently. US court back reason over greed. If the "families" aka ambulance chasing lawyers win it is a disaster. No nation will ever want to loan its treasure to another.
Basically any nation could go to its own courts and legally steal national assets. Imagine Afghanistan suing USA for each innocent killed by a US missile. Same for Iraq or Pakistan. There will not be a penny in USA that is not taken as damage.

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Wed Mar 30, 2011 07:07 AM PDTwin then I suggest Iran take USA to "court" for killing 254 Iranian civilians. That in the shooting down of flight 655. Then award itself say the Yosemite National Park; the Statue of Liberty and all of the USA fleet in the Persian Gulf region. Why not? If people want to act like jerks we could all do that as well.
Thanks for reminding everyone on this ongoing disaster
by MM on Wed Mar 30, 2011 06:48 AM PDT“On Sept. 4th, 1997, a Hamas-sponsored suicide attack at the Ben Yehuda mall in Jerusalem took the lives of five people, including three young girls.” The families of the victims took IRI (as sponsors of Hamas) to a US court and won a large settlement. Since they cannot recover money from IRI, the families are targeting the Persepolis fortification tablets, loaned in 1937 to the Univ. of Chicago, as their prize. This case is heading all the way to the supreme court of the US and the legal battle will be expensive.
VPK - As you said, whether you are for or against NIAC, you have to be for saving these tablets. There is a wealth of information about the ancient Persia that is being discovered by deciphering the Persepolis artifacts (Technology brings new insights to ancient language, Persepolis Tablets Reveal Realities of Ancient Persia).
In addition to the extracted information/history, these tablets belong to the Iranian culture in a museum, and should not be the subject of a lawsuit that I am afraid will put these tablets on eBay auction block. Please contribute to the Persepolis tablet defense fund or participate in fundraisers in your area.
