The Hat Race

Photo essay: Fashion at the richest racing event in the world

by Parviz Forghani

When after many months of planning, finally I made it to go and visit the "Nad Al Shiba", Dubai's extravagant horse racing field, it coincided with "Dubai World Cup". A multi-million-dollar mega event to attract red carpet stars not only in the fields of horse racing and betting, but a Hollywood style party: tons of cosmetics, extreme high heels, night gowns, $500 champagnes and sparkling wines and giggles as well as loud laughter. As a tradition of horse racing events, the ladies dress as if they are in a night party and they wear hats: elegant hats, chic hats, big hats, feather hats, beautiful hats and funny hats. Out of all events and sights, this "Hat Walk" attracted my attention >>> more

Full Disclosure

Dear Mr. Forghani,

That quote is not mine but it belongs to Jon Stewart from the Comedy Channel. Karim Sadjadpour uses that line as a set up for his line, "The Islamic Republic is a hybrid between the Soviet Union and the Taleban!"

However, I do have a few lines of my own that I have used on this site for the past seven years!

Two sides of the coin

by Parviz Forghani on

Thanks for the comments and thoughts, I agree with most of you, I specially like Faramarz's note when he says "Dubai is the child of love between Saudi Arabia and Las Vegas" very nicely said! And I have to mention that I do not agree with Maziar when he calls these ladies "whores" that's a bit too far. Living off and on in Dubai for 15 years I have tried to show both sides of Dubai coin in my notes and photos. If you read Persian and are interested check these:

Land of discriminations!

by Arj on

Those of us who have been to UAE more than once (for, the first trip is mostly spent on sightseeing, shopping and getting hammered...), might have had a chance of seeing both sides of Dubai, this land of extravagant consumptions which is founded on an archaic caste system based on principles of modern day slavery!

A land where the tallest buildings in the world are built by the lowest paid labourers deprived of their very basic human rights, who in many cases spend their nights like sardin, crammed in shipping containers alongside dozens others with no running water or A/C in 55 degrees Celcius: //www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRPdIZ3dexU&feature=fvwrel

Don't say that to anyone but I am a little bit Taghooti myself..    I can't resist the exotic beaches, the delicious cuisines and not to mention the best shopping malls ever ..  blame it on me for being such an uncontrollable shopaholic.....

But seriously I like Dubai.    I will write more about it with some pictures to proof .

And Dariush jan thanks for being such a great sport. I appreciate your sense of humor ..

Didn't it occur to you that Human Rights are being Abused by the Local SAVAK while you spent your money oblivious of all the "corruption" and disregard for "Human Rights" in this Sand Kingdom ? ...

Maziar, Why do you call these women whores?

by Soosan Khanoom on

Just because the race is in Dubai rather than in a western country?    Don't you know that Arabian horses are the Jewel of any racing events? It is an old event that started in middle east.... Besides , there are many business run by the foreigners in Dubai;  in addition to that Dubai has become a tourists destination from around the world.  Many travel to Dubai for specific events that are being held there. This event happens to be just one of it.

I was in Dubai for the new year eve and you could see people including women from every single part of this planet celebrating it.   It is not a good idea to be so judgmental.

By the way, Dubai is more classy than Nashville  ...

Freak of nature!

by Arj on

A cultural wasteland that's a by-product of the marriage of Islamic economy (no productive value) and specualtive capitalism whose chief products are counterfeit designer sunglasses and knock-off perfumes! A land whose absolute lack of cultural identity combined with petro-generated greed has resulted in its sole contribution to the human kind; tall buildings, ostentatious flaunting, and nothing more!
