Demanding Democracy

New chapter in struggle against dictatorship

12-Feb-2011 (21 comments)
The 1979 Iranian Revolution was supposed to be such revolution, which was hijacked by the most organized, radical and ruthless Islamist who at the time appeared to be benign and on the side of the people. Their success in coming to power brought awe and admiration to all oppressed people in the world and rang a bell of hope that brought deafness the ears of those who stood too close in guard. It soon became apparent that the Iranian people were taken for a ride into a prison of their own making>>>

Iranians hold key to America's long-term strategic interests

12-Feb-2011 (6 comments)
As the Islamic regime of Iran celebrates its 32nd anniversary, the people of Iran face monumental economic challenges similar to those faced by other countries in the region like Tunisia and Egypt. The economy is feeling the sting of sanctions with shortages, unemployment, layoffs and inflation fears creating a widening gap between the regime and the people. Indeed, the regime is facing its toughest challenge – its 32-year monopoly may be about to be busted wide open>>>

Triple distilled review of Kiosk's "Triple Distilled"

12-Feb-2011 (4 comments)
In a churning sea of come and go bands, Kiosk has thankfully remained consistent, in that each successive album pushes the boundaries of what is considered normal, but more importantly Kiosk pushes me to to try and make some sort of sense of it and I grow from it. "Triple Distilled" Obviously referring to late night drinking sessions of the yore of pre-revolution Iran, specifically those in the southern part of Tehran's red light >>>

MUBARAK

Lost in Translation

Beware when protesters ask for Mubarak’s head

10-Feb-2011 (11 comments)
The U.S. media and protesters in the Tahrir Square wanted to know if Mubarak resigned. The answer is “no.” Mubarak did not say “I hereby resign as President of Egypt.” Instead he said that he had passed on/delegated the powers/authority of the presidency onto the vice president. Blitzer of CNN wanted to know if Mubarak was de jure this or Mr. Suleiman was de facto that. Here is what has happened so far: Mubarak continues to be the head of state. Head-of-state and head-of-government are two different functions>>>

How Iran sees Egypt's protests

10-Feb-2011 (4 comments)
Whether Egypt's uprising could spread to Iran is an open question. Regional protests come amid deteriorating economic conditions in Iran. Under tightening economic sanctions, economic growth, unemployment, inflation, and poverty are all worse in Iran than in Tunisia or Egypt, writes Ali Reza Eshraghi in the Asia Times. But unlike Tunisia's unpopular former president Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, who was ousted in January, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad still has support from poorer Iranians>>>

Arab world moves to new era, Iranians await next opportunity

10-Feb-2011 (32 comments)
Since the Egyptian uprising began, Iran's opposition figures inside and outside the country have looked to the streets of Cairo with admiration and regret. Who would have thought it would be the Egyptians capable of forcing concessions -- however limited they might be at this stage -- from their authoritarian rulers, not the Green movement? "For the first time in history, the Iranians are jealous of the Arabs," said a young oppositionist, who was active in the 2009 protests>>>

چگونه جمهوری اسلامی انقلاب مصر را به عقب انداخت؟

10-Feb-2011 (one comment)

Three possibilities in Egypt

08-Feb-2011 (35 comments)
The Egyptian People's courageous struggle is more than the ouster of a hated dictator: it is a sweeping movement against an old, cruel order and has deep economic, social, political and international dimensions. The sudden revolutionary eruption in Egypt and the demand for real and substantive democracy, equality and independence from U.S. domination has stunned the leaders of the western imperialist powers>>>
