The events in Egypt in the past week has given the government of the Resolute Nation a pretext to tout its own horn as a mover and inspiration for what is going on in the Arab world. According to the BBC Persian, the Iranian media in the last few days hve been taking to the claim that the developments in Egypt and Tunis are reflections of the Iran’s revolution in Bahman of 1357. In a televised interview broadcast just a few days ago, University of Michigan History Professor Juan Cole described the Tunisian uprising as not only “the first popular revolution since [the Iranian revolution of] 1979,” but also “something that other Arab countries might well look to -- the public, at least -- for inspiration”. Coming from a Middle East expert, who is also a trained historian, this analysis is totally unacceptable because it fails to so much as even mention the historical fact that Iran’s Green Movement preceded the “mass movement” in Tunisia>>>

Daryoush Homayoun died on 28th January at the age of 82. He was a great journalist, politician, thinker, teacher and human being. He left behind hundreds of articles, books, interviews and many devoted friends and students. I met Homayoun a few times and once conducted an interview with him. We kept an on and off correspondence up to the beginning of this year. What impressed me most about Homayoun was his unwavering sincerity>>>

یکی از خواص اعدام اعمال قدرت و ایجاد ترس در بنی بشر است و ایجاد ترس در مواقع افول دولت فرخنده و فقر مردم برای بقای نظام بسیار واجب و ضروری می باشد. از این رو آمار اعدام ها در کشورهای دیکتاتوری همیشه بالا می باشد و در دوران خشم و فقر مردم این آمار بالا و بالاتر می رود. حکومت های اقتدارگرا با توسل جستن به اعدام و به خصوص اعدام در ملاء عام میزان ترس را در کنه وجود مردم بالا برده و مدام بر عمر حکومت خویش می افزایند>>>

فکر به نابودی مورچه ها برای خیلی از مردم شهر به نوعی سرگرمی و بهانه ی زندگی تبدیل شده و برخی از شهروندان اصولن از حضور مورچه ها نگران و پریشان نیستند؛ خوب جانم! مورچه ها هستند، چه کنیم؟ این بیچاره ها سرشان به کار خودشان بند است و آنقدرها هم که گفته می شود، آزاری ندارند! فکر نمی کنید اگر مورچه ها را زیبا ببینید، گاه مفید هم بنظر می رسند؟!

Don't bring religion to government. We Iranian people unfortunately did, and the results are far worse than what we had. Fortunately, you do not have a powerful character like Khomanee who said one thing, before reaching power, and the opposite after. But still, avoid those who provide their strict religious belief as the solution, for complex problems that faces us today. Our problems today, require collective cooperation and rational thinking, and the freedom to do so>>>

منطقه خاور میانه آبستن حوادثی است. در لبنان، حزب الله قدرت خود را در سقوط حکومت نشان داده است و اکنون برای ایجاد حکومت مطلوب خود زورآزمایی میکند. در فلسطین، مذاکرات صلح با سماجت اسراییل در توسعه شهرکها در مناطق اشغالی به بنبست برخورد، و اکنون نشر اسناد محرمانهای که حاکی از دست و دل بازی مذاکره کنندگان فلسطینی در عرضه امتیاز به اسراییل بوده، به اعتبار حکومت خودگردان فلسطینی به شدت صدمه زده و زمینه را برای افزایش نفوذ و اعتبار حماس فراهم کرده است>>>

Images of the popular demonstrations that engulfed the country over the past few weeks bore resemblance to the protests that followed the disputed 2009 Iranian presidential election. The Green Movement of Iran, however, envisioned but never realized its promised land and succumbed to the repression of the Iranian theocracy. This is despite the similar nature of the two regimes>>>

پس از خبر در گذشت ِ شاهزادۀ جوان، درمیان ِ موج همدردی بسیاری، وقتی به بعضی سایت های اینترنتی نگاه می کنم و بعضی اظهار ِ نظرها ی ِ مغرضانه در تلویزیون های ایرانی را می شنوم ، یک چیزی در درونم می میرد. باخو د فکر می کنم که چه بر سر ِما آمده است که حتا اتفاقی این چنین تراژیک قلبمان را نمی لرزاند. بر ما چه گذشته است که می توانیم این چنین نظرهای بیرحمانه و چندش آوری را درمورد ِ مرگ ِ یک انسان، یک جوان، یک هموطن، به قلم و یا به زبان بیاوریم>>>

I was sitting in Martin Mack's on Haight Street at 7:30 on New Year's Eve and I fell into a conversation with a girl who was also there by herself. We talked a little and danced a little.
