by h.jahanshahi

Congratulations Professor!!!

by anglophile on

You just managed to relate "gooz" to "shaqiqe" (using Dr Homa's favourite phonetic alphabets). I am challenging you to produce  documented evidence that Musaddiq (Homa's alphabet again)  had opposed or declined the amnesty/pardon granted to Ostaad Khalil Tahmaasebi since 5 August 1952 (date the bill was passed by Majlis) and you are (in your habitual style) hiding yourself, this time behind Homa (LOL) and quoting a dubious axtract from a statement by  Navab dated 13 May 1951?!!! Or  quuoting the date of Fatemi's ill-fated attack by Abd-Khodaee (15 Febrary 1952!!!).  What has gooz got to do with Shaghighe professor LOL?

Fadaian Islam assassination attempt on Dr. Hussein Fatemi was on February 15, 1952.  (I have also seen the date as Feb 16, 1952).

"I have no doubt that, right now, all my dear brothers who are in jail [i.e. the seven fada'iyan members who had been arrested after Razmara's assassination] are there on the orders of Dr Musaddiq, Kashani and the National Front..." The leader of Fadaian Islam in Tarraqi (weekly magazine) 13 May 1951.  cited and translated by Homa Katouzian, Musaddiq and the Struggle for Power in Iran (London: IB Taurus, 1990), pp. 162, anf fn 8, p. 284.

More Hearsay and Fabrications by Mossadeghists

by anglophile on

If one needs to know what "hearsay" and "fabrication" mean, there are no better examples than the comments stated here by Masoud Kazemzadeh. Kazemzadeh, quoting an extract from a hearsay-based account by Ervand Abrahamian (a 'prominent' partial and pro-Mossadegh academic) and providing a video link to a further hearsay-based narrative by Mohammad Amini (a second generation Mossadegh worshipper and son of Nosratollah Amini, Mossadegh's personal consigliare) filled with fabricated acccounts and erroneous dates, attempts to prove that Mossadegh had opposed the release from jail of Khalil Tahmasebi, the Islamic Fedaee assassin of Genral Razmara, Mossadegh's predecessor! Now let us examine the evidence provided by Kazemzadeh: Kashani's opposition to Mosaddeq came into the open by mid-1953 once the latter issued a referendum to dissolve Parliament, drafted an electoral bill enfranchising women, tended to favor state enterprises over the bazaar, refused to ban alcohol, anddeclined amnesty to assassins from the Fedayan-e Islam.” Source: Ervand Abrahamian, Khomeinism: Essays on the Islamic Republic(Berkeley: University of California Press, 1993). To start with Khalil Tahmasebi was released from jail, due to a bill passed by a fully supportive Majlis, right after Mossadegh's reappointment to office in July 1952 without any opposition by Jebhe Melli and pro-Mossadegh deputies who constituded the largest single majority in Majles. Khalil Tahmasebi was released from jail on 15 November 1952, at the height of intimate relations between Mossadegh and Ayatollah Kashani, the religious grandee and the spiritual  leader of the Islamic Fedaeeyan. The relations between Mossadegh and Ayatollah Kashani were still going strong as evidenced by the statement issued by the Ayatollah on 19 January 1953 (7 months to the day when Mossadegh was removed) encouraging his followers to support Mossadegh and reaffirming his own commitments to do so. ALL Islamic assassins were released from jail well before the relations between Ayatollah and Mossadegh soured. (Tahmasebi on 15 November 1952 and Navab Safavi on 13 February 1953 - les than a month after Kashani supported Mossadegh in his statement) - Source: "Rooz shemar-e taarikh Iran - vol. 1,  Bagher Ameli) //www.noormags.com/view/fa/articlepage/532129 Abrahamian (and Kazemzadeh quoting from him) does not provide any documented evidence to the authenticity of his claim that Mossadegh declined or opposed amnesty to assassins from Fadaeeyan Islam: no date, no speech, no statement, no interview NOTHING is produced to show that his claim is authentic, in other words, it is merely based on hearsay. Mohammad Amini's claim in his interview is equally unauthenticated as it gives no documented or recorded evidence to his claim that Mossadegh opposed the amnesty. This is the best example of hearsy as Amini's father, Mossadegh's consigliare, must have passed such a claim to his son! I am sorry professor but no amount of hiding behind the so called 'top' academics can carry a weight when it comes to irrefutable evidence which you, so dismally, failed to produce.
The charge remains standing

The Alleged Aban 1319 meeting was made up by Navab and the Shah

by religionoutofgovernment on

The alleged Aban 1329 meeting between Navab Safavi, Tahmasebi, Kashani followers and JB members was made up by Navab Safavi and the Shah's government. Mozaffar Baghai (no friend of Mossadegh!) details his detention and interrogation in 1334 by the army, when he was asked to confirm the alleged meeting in Aban 1329. In one interview Navab Safavi himself was present. Baghai flatly denied the alleged Aban meeting and said the only meeting that took place between him, Fatemi and Navab Safavi was in the first few months of Mosaddegh's premiership, in 1330, when Navab Safavi asked them to convey to Mossadegh their demands of forced Hejab for women, closure of movie theaters etc. To which Fatemi responded that he would never accept these demands.

On Mossadegh, the Shah, and the release/Amnesty for Tahmasebi

by Masoud Kazemzadeh on

On Mossadegh and Tahmasebi’s release/amnesty.  There are 2 main assassins from Fadian Islam (Navab Safavi and Khalil Tahmasebi) at this period.   In the following Professor Ervand Abrahamian writes that Mossadegh “declined amnesty to assassins from the Fadayan-e Islam.”  Professor Ervand Abrahamian, who is one of the most prominent historians of Iran, writes: //www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/tehranbureau/2009/08/history-used-and-abused.html “Kashani's opposition to Mosaddeq came into the open by mid-1953 once the latter issued a referendum to dissolve Parliament, drafted an electoral bill enfranchising women, tended to favor state enterprises over the bazaar, refused to ban alcohol, and declined amnesty to assassins from the Fedayan-e Islam.Source: Ervand Abrahamian, Khomeinism: Essays on the Islamic Republic (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1993). //www.amazon.com/Khomeinism-Islamic-Republic-Ervand-Abrahamian/dp/0520085035    ROOG has ALREADY posted the interview with Mohammad Amini in this very blog.  In the interview states that the Kashani and Shams Ghanat-Abadi passed the bill to release Tahmasebi, that the Shah signed the bill and that Mossadegh opposed releasing of Tahmasebi.   Listen to minutes 32:40 to 40:45. //www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoKkbC6sChc&feature=player_embedded

Not my theory old boy but your own Professor's :))

by anglophile on

I only challenged Masoud Kazemzadeh's professorial assertion (on this very thread):     "2. When the Majles supported the release of Tahmasebi, the Speaker of the Majles was Ayatollah Kashani. At that time, Kashani was opposed to Mossadegh and was allied with the Shah. The Shah SUPPORTED the release of Tahmasebi. Dr. Mossadegh OPPOSED the release of Tahmasebi   from an earlier comment by MK titled:

Naa Shah Mikhahim, Naa Akhund. Laanat Bar 2 ta Shoon"  //iranian.com/main/blog/h-jahanshahi-9page1                There is no sophistry at work here, All I am saying is: prove it professor!    One more points my dear fellow :  I am only obssessed with those who are pathologically obssessed with the good Doctor. And boy o boy is there no shortage of them on this site -    LOL

Vosough O Dowleh

by religionoutofgovernment on

Our history is a who's who of mercinaries like Vosough o Dowleh and a long list of dictators and despots like The Shah and his illiterate dad. This is exactly why we should celebrate the very few who championed democracy and modern values such as Amir Kabir, many constitutionalists, Mosaddegh and Bakhtiar. This is not about Mosaddegh. If we don't keep his legacy alive, we really have not much in our history to be proud of.

History 101

by Masoud Kazemzadeh on

Iranian History 101:

Iran had come under the colonial control of the Tsarist Russia and Britain. Due to several reasons Iran was not officially colonized such as was done in India. The two main colonial powers (Russia and UK) were allies against the rising Germany since the late 19th century. In the European balance of power struggles, with the unification of German states into Germany in 1871, and its dramatic rise to power, Britain, France, and Russia made an alliance. This came to be known as the "Triple Entente." By 1904, this became official policy. (The Triple Entente counter the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungarian Empre and Italy).

Both the Russian and British colonial powers were expansionist powers. Their colonial ambitions crossed into Iran. To prevent armed conflict, they decided to divide Iran into their zones of influence, where each would have its own de facto colonial control. Britain took the souther part of Iran while Russia took the northern part. The central part was regarded as shared or neutral zone. In 1907, Russia and Britain signed the SECRET agreement variously called "St. Petersburg Agreement" or "the Anglo-Russian Agreement of 1907."

for a critique of the British policy among British anti-imperialist circles see the excellent study by Prof. Mansour Bonakdarian:

During WWI, in 1915, the British and Russians make another secret agreement which gave Tehran to British and Constantinople to the Russians.

The Bolshevik revolution destroyed the Russian colonial control of Iran in 1917. The British were terrified that communism would spread to Iran and they would lose their de facto colonial control of Iranian oil and politics. By 1919, the British forces were involved in the Middle East (eventually defeated by Ata Turk in Turkey) and exhusted by WWI. With the absence of Russia (now USSR),the UK wanted to cement its de facto colonial subjugation of Iran with an official treaty. The Agreement of 1919 was such an agreement. Vosugh Ol Dowleh accepted a huge bribe to sign it. The Agreement of 1919 gave the British control over Iran’s finances and military. The American officials at the time described the agreement as making Iran a virtual colony of the British.

The defeat of the 1919 agreement led later on to the support of the British officials in Iran for the coup by Seyyed Zia and Reza Khan. Reza Shah performed many of the policies that the British wanted (but not all of them). Reza Shah extended the oil concession for an additional 32 year (a total of 60 years)!!!!!!!!

During WWII, Reza Shah moved away from the UK and became close to Hitler’s Germany. Thus, the UK and USSR invaded Iran, send Reza Shah to exile and placed his son Mohammad Reza Pahlavi on the throne. Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi was 100% nokar of the British.

aynak

Siavash, let's look at your writeup

by aynak on

I am not sure if you fully read what I wrote.   I explicitly stated that not only Mossadegh did not dislike U.S he very much liked U.S and I gave reason/proof why I think he did.  This will also be true for most Iranian people, prior to 53.  Then you have 1953 coup.   That will not leave a good taste on anyones mouth, except those who were beneficiaries of the coup.  But the big leap you make is to equate West with U.S.   Someone may dislike the policy U.S took in 1953, which was wrong, and condmen U.S's role in orchestrating the coup. That does not mean that person is anti-West.   This is so basic, that I should not even have to explain it.  But it would be natural to expect a backlash and that's what Albright was alluding to, for U.S's role and dislike that had generated among many Iranians toward U.S at that time till revolution.   But that's not being anti-West, that's being anti U.S policy.  For instance why has there never been a slogan against France? Spain? Italy? Germany? Sweden?  Belgium .....  Are they not Western countries?

As for Israel, many in Iran disliked Israel particularly during SHah time, *because* of Savak cooperation with elements withing Israeli  security apparatus.  Basically, shah was strengthening his security forces to supress opposition, (and democratic opposition at that) this is before anyone started arm struggle, we are talking 1954-1968/71.   So the love for Israel started when they were cooperating with Shah, and those who took up arm went outside, Palestine was a good destination (now we are tallking early 1970's).   You have to ask which started first?

-Did shah strengthen Savak first, and persecuted opposition?

or-

Did opposition out of no reason started an arm struggle?

Once you understand that order, then everything else falls in place:

Shah-was being a despot.  His security forces were cooperating with the Israeli's as well as some in U.S and therefore the opposition gravitated toward the other side (i.e Palestinain struggle seemed similar, they for their right, and Iranian for our right).

None of this has anything to do with being anti-West.

What puzzle's me is that you are here enjoying freedom of speech and everything that West has to offer, yet, for some reason you see Shah's rule as extenstion of Western influence?

What is even more puzzling is that, 3 years of Mossadegh's rule did not lead us to democracy ?!!? and we need to look at that, but we can't ask why the following 27 years did not.

In sum: Iran has had the following:

3000+ years of Monarchy

(including the last 33 years of Monarchy by Khamane-ee)

and 3 years of Mossadegh.

As far as "independence" now you are falling for Islamic Regimes terminology.   Independence, does not mean Iranian thugs killing Iranian people while the rules are making concessions all over the world to China, India,Russia ....  This terminology is promoted by the regime and accepted by their supporters, but is laughable.  In today's global economy, the word "indepenence" of a country is an oxymoron.   We need to look at policies and see how policies can best benefit people.

aynak''s question

by Siavash300 on

Aynak

They both view relationship with the western countries, especilly with Brits in case of mosaddeq, as a sign of weakness and being Nokar. Jebhe Meli brag about  of NOT being "Nokar". They are targeting Iranian national pride to legitimize their agenda. Many Islamic fundamentalist brag about Islamic government being "independant". They both claim Iran was dependant during shah days, though Jebhe Meli and Islamic fundamentalists counter part are independant. They repeating the same story over and over. Their core objective were to show hostitlity toward the foreign countries. They both supported terrorist goups of Palestians against democratric government of Israel. Remember Yaser Arafat trip to Tehran and his hand shake with Dr. Sanjabi upon arrival. Yaser Arafat hand was being squeezed by Imam khomainie later on. Their pictures were distributed all over Iran. Their agenda intitiated by ousting the shah or ending the monarchy in Iran. They were both on the same page.  One wanted to impose so-called democratic government and the other one wanted to impose Sharia law government. They both failed in 1953, but they were successful in 1979. Sanjabi was kissing khomaini's rear end all the way.

We could NOT see the result in 1953 because pro western forces had upper hand and they prevailed,  but in 1979 due to shah's illness and some other factors, we could see the result. Anti west forces eventually took power and we saw the result for 32 years.

Focus

on topic has maintained the point of this blog. I'm glad you appreciate that Mossadegh/Shah argument is not about to be settled as it has not for 60 years and there lies another Iranian dilemma I pointed to in earlier comment.

I do differ on your point about whether the West was enemy of Iran. It may not have been and is not in a puritan sense or as a matter of principal but in the context of 'colonial' (not that Iran was a colony) mindset, it was just another place to be exploited and in that sense Iranian and colonial interests collided and Mossadegh's approach got him legal and symbolic victories as his imaginary David got crushed by Goliath in the real war. His ego was just too big. This was a problem Shah also exhibited in other ways but his deeper familiarity with the West helped balance the economic/power relationship reasonably well such that Iran went through decades of progress despite various lacks. Many who are successful in the West owe their context and framework to Shah and the relative normalcy of his period; and there lies the Irony of the never ending bad mouthing him.

I would also like to point out whether out of enmity or pure economic greed, the rapist republic and the most backward and vile segments of Iran could not take hold of power without that help. And I know many Mossadeghi that even today claim the rapist republic has brought independence to Iran. This kind of confusion is beyond reason or repair.

Related to this is the separations of mosque and state and other separations you point out as well. There is also a historic reason for it and it has been and continues to be Iranian Achilles' heel. It started with the "dual containment policy"....It has been well exploited by enemies foreign and domestic, and implementation started with ushering khemeini in:  //iranian.com/main/2010/jan/center-univer...
