To Sibil

by PArviz (not verified) on

Imagine you were a king once and then you became just a king in exile where nobody knew you even existed. If you were offered the chance of becoming a king in power again I am sure you would take it regardless of the dangers.
Politicians are hungry for power, that is their nature. They can not bring themselves to the level of ordinary people. They want to be in the headlines all the time. So for a politician being in exile somewhere is like slow death.

That is why she went back regardless of the dangers.

She was at least intelligent enough to recognize the imminent danger threatening her life from the moment she came back to Pakistan. Why did she do that? Why was she so careless? What was worthy enough to her that she was willing to sacrifice her life for?

As much as I think her

by PArviz (not verified) on

As much as I think her killing was an act of utter savagery and I feel very sorry for her children and family, unfortunately when it comes to her as a politician I have to agree with Mammad (who in my opinion is very knowledgeable about the way things work in Pakistan).

Just to give you an indication of how things are done on a tribal basis in Pakistan (as in many other third world countries) see how the PPP chose a 19 year old student (Bhutto's son) as the leader of the party. As long as these "dynasties" are in power nothing good will happen to the people of that country.

Once again my condolences to her children and may she rest in peace and her god be with her.

It is not about Producing Heroes!

Dear Naazokbin:

If I understand your question correctly, you wonder how Benazir Bhutto was "elected."

Elections in Pakistan are not free, or democratic, or fair, three fundamental pillars of any elections. Votes are bought all the time, and it is easy to do so in a poor country like Pakistan. True democrats are threatened by the ISI all the time, or by the Islamic radicals. Often they lose their life.
So, the fact that Benazir Bhutto was elected, does not mean much. I am not saying it means nothing, but that it does not mean what they make it to be. Pakistan is a country in which 80% - yes, it is not a typo, 80% - of the school-age kids work rather than go to school.
So, such poor people are enlightened enough not to sell their votes, or not to be seduced by corrupt politicians? I find it hard to believe.

I agree that one can hardly find any nation without corrupt politicians, but everything is relative. Do we put the democracies in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, on par with that of the US? Absolutely not. Are they perfect? Not really, but everything is relative.

But, in Bhutto's case, the corruption and incompetence were way out of control, if there is such a thing. That is why I believe that she was not whom the main stream media in the US make her to be.

What should be done for, for example, Iran? First of all, I don't agree with you that Iran is backward. It is, in fact, a sophisticated society, but controlled by some backward-thinking people. Democracy is not a project to start on a specific date and end at a specific date. It is a process, a long one at that. It has ups and downs. First, NGOs and political partiers should form. Then, they should spread. Then, the party discipline should take roots. Then, the parties and NGOs should educate people politically, making them aware of their rights, but also their responsibilities.

Then, through the political parties and NGOs the grassroot organizations for democratic peaceful changes should be strengthened. It is then, and only then, that meaningful changes can be made.

I am, in fact, quite optimistic about Iran. So long as the US does not commit suicide by attacking Iran, Iran will travel its own path and will develop democracy.

I do not believe in importing democracy. Neither do I believe in mimicking some of the others. Every nation should develop its own path.

Producing Heroes!

by Naazokbin (not verified) on

Mammad,

I don't believe in making heroes in order to incite people/the masses. I'm not sure how much Mr. Akbari, himself believes in his own statements, especially, his statements at the end of his article which sound more like a buch of cliches than a well thoght out conclusion.

However, I would like to hear your opinion on the following:
I have understood democracy as a political concept/phenomenon. Was/am I wrong to believe so?

In a democracy, the government is only one institution among many other institutions or organizations.

Please show me a democractic government which is neither politically bankrupt nor economically corrupt. Also, please explain why corrupt individuals are being elected.

Aren't you confusing democracy for something else?

I don't agree with the status quo in the Middle East.
What would you propose as a solution to the problems of the politically backward states, particularly, Iran.

Benazir Bhutto, an great icon of our era? I think not!

by Mammad (not verified) on

We Iranians are masters of great exaggerations. We also have a very short memory, if we have one at all, and forget the past, which is why we never learn anything from history.

Murder of Benazir Bhutto, the "Pinky," was, of course tragic. But let's not forget who she really was:

Politically, she was an utter failure as Prime Minister of Pakistan, from 1988-1990, and 1993-1996. She did nothing to reduce poverty and backwardness in Pakistan. It was during her premiership from 1993 that the Pakistan military intelligence - the ISI - created the Taliban and helped them to come to power in Afghanistan through violence in 1996. It was during the same era that Abdulghadir Khan - known as A.Q. Khan in the West - the owner of Pakistan nuclear supermarket, started to help Libya and North Korea, not to mention Iran, obtain nuclear technology. She was the Prime Minister, but the military was, and still is in the so-called Pakistan "democracy" according to the nonexistent world of Bush and Condi, the real power.

Benazir and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, stole $1.5 billion from poor people of Pakistan. Zardari is known in Pakistan as "Mr. 10%," for the commissions that he would receive for every governmental contract, the government ran by his wife. The couple was under indictment in Pakistan, which forced them to flee Pakistan, and was convicted in Switzerland. They own mansions in Dubai, London, southern France, and New York, not to mention the vast lands that Benazir and her family - one of the largest landowners and most important feudals - own in Pakistan, and the palace that she has there, in a country where the vast majority lives in poverty, the root cause of Islamic radicalism. She was so Westernized that she could not speak Urdo well, and hardly any Sindhi, and she was from Sindh! And, now, Zardari, Mr. 10%, has been appointed the chief of Benazir's Pakistan People's Party, a supposedly leftist party and a member of Socialist International! Sad day for socialists and leftists too, and a vivid demonstration of what is going on in Pakistan!

Yes, Benazir looked "good" compared to Pervez Musharraf, a corrupt military dictator whose government has signed a peace treaty with the Taliban and their allies in Waziristan. Musharraf agreed to support the United States after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and stop supporting the Taliban, only after Richard Armitage, Deputy Secretary of State at that time, threatened him that the US would bomb Pakistan back to the stone age. What the Bushies want is what the United States has always wanted in Pakistan - a military dictatorship with a civilian face. So, they pushed Benazir and essentially imposed her on Musharraf.
Musharraf "forgave" Benazir and Zardari for their looting, but did not ask them to return the money!

But the Bushies are so out of touch that it did not even occur to them that Benazir, viewed by many in Pakistan as a puppet of the US, might be murdered. The poor woman wanted to hire security guards for herself from Britain and Israel, but could not!

So, let's not exaggerate anything. Let's use Benazir's death to remind ourselves that it is the United States and the ISI who created the so-caled Afghan Mujahedin, the Taliban, and ultimately the Al Queda. Let's remind ourselves that the US "stunch" ally, Saudi Arabia, funds the Madrasas in Pakistan, the breading ground for radicalism and extremism, which ultimately murdered Benazir. And, let's remind ourselves that it was with the US support that General Muhammad Zia al-Hagh overthrew Benazir's father, Zolfaghar, in 1977 and hanged him, imposed the Shariat on Pakistan, and established world's 1st Islamic Republic - Iran's was not the 1st. Finally, let's remind ourselves that it was during 1993-1996, when Benazir was the Prime Minister, that Islamic radicals were at the peak of their power in Pakistan.

So, let's mourn the tragic death of a human being, but not lionize a rich, corrupt, and incompetent leader. Benazir as an icon? You must be kidding. Only those who consider the United States bankrupt policy toward the Middle East and Pakistan as the right policy, and are infatuated with the so-called Western democracy, can see Benazir as an icon.
