Petty role model
by Soraya Sepahpour-Ulrich
12-Oct-2007

One of America’s greatest presidents, Franklin D. Roosevelt, recruited a group of advisers from the prestigious Columbia University – they were known as ‘Brain Trust’. In their first one hundred days in office, the Brains Trust helped Roosevelt enact fifteen major laws beneficial to the country. Regrettably, today, Columbia under the leadership of a petty role-model, Lee Bollinger, is losing its prestige and has become a place of hate and discrimination. A noose was found in a lecture room of a black female professor.

America’s intolerable past is re-awakened at this prestigious university because Bollinger demonstrated to the world that under his leadership, Columbia is not a place of learning, truth-seeking and exchange of ideas, but rather where the powerful are permitted to dominate not as a result of their intellectual capabilities, but due to the interest groups that give voice to their authority.

The United States is going through a critical juncture. It is the leadership in the White House that sets the mood for the tragic incident at ‘Jenna 6’ and the audacious people such as Bollinger to surface in the manner in which they did. Throughout America there is a reappearance of nooses because hate-filled ‘God-fearing’ leaders have publicly announced by way of example that attacking those we feel are weaker, disdainful, or inferior, is the acceptable solution. Mr. Bush’s genocide in Iraq, his neglect of the victims of Hurricane Katrina, and Bollinger’s disgraceful treatment of Iran’s president, Mr. Ahmadinejad, the next nation that is the target of Mr. Bush’s genocidal attack are such examples.

So once again, the ugly monster of bigotry that had been dormant is stirred in this country. During the Cold War years, as America was competing with the Soviet Union to win over the ‘hearts and minds’ of the free world, it faced the same monster – The Jim Crow Laws and segregation. How could it brag of democracy, human rights and the American Dream when blacks had no rights? It set out to correct its tarnished image through diplomacy. One has to wonder what will be done in today’s world where the truth is not so easily buried.

While Mr. Bush wages war against ‘evil’ he is inspiring malice at home. Bollinger’s ‘petty’ performance has brought wickedness to Columbia. Thankfully, the students of Columbia are resisting the evil temptation. Surely one must wonder why it is that there is not the same unity to resist the hatred they are brewing towards Islam. Does a Moslem have to have his/her head in a noose before we take action - Is the red, white and blue not solid enough to cover religion?

Jamshid,
You should go take care of my brothel houses, you pimp. Why are you on iranian.com? You didn't pay me your share of pimping operation for the last month claiming you were busy buying drugs for the ladies. Now I find you wasting your time on iranian.com? What sort of a pimp are you? In Shahre_No, I would fire you in a minute. Here of course, I don't have any power.

Do you really really really think we are such fools to take you seriously? Iran exports oil, only to buy it back more expensively in form of gasoline. We don't even have enough oil refineries to keep up with internal needs, let alone export "refined" oil  which has a higher price and crude oil. You call that development?

The entire Iranian infrastructure and industries are in a state of shamble and you call that development?

Iran has four times more revenues that during the shah and it is in worst shape than even then. You call that development?

30 years. THIRTY years! and you got nothing to show. And don't blame the "jange tahmili".

Mina, ahamagh, the state of opposition is "sad" as you said, because the "opposition" is just begining to weed out garbage like you amongst themselves. They are also learning, the hard way, that they are many volunteer pro-IRI garbage out there that pretend to oppose the IRI and at the same time trash the opposition to ignite division, to propogate hoplessness, and to derail the opposition's efforts.

The opposition to the IRI is far from prefect. But it will become better, once the likes of you are weeded out. Be sure of it.

I read your articles and enjoy your honesty, and deep understanding of current issues involving Iran and and western bullies. My dear Soraya you unlike these ignorant Tehran-gelesis, understand exactly where these issues stem from.

BTW High-speed internet is available in Iran. I encourage all true Iranians to take trip to Iran and witness the progress and developments upclose in person. Iran has 1% of world car market, exporter of agricultural goods, self-suffient in many industrial areas which Iran imported them and even more during Alahazrat. Freedom and democracy would flourish as soon as bullies stop threatning Iran with their big Military and tactical nuclear arsenals every day.
Iran is not a western-style democracy but is the only democracy in middle-east and Islamic world, why is that the rest of middle eastern/Islamic countries are NOT picked on but at same time are the most dictatorials of all. Does Sauds and rest of the so called moderate and friendly Arab coutries even have Parliament or any kind of true assembly?
I like to see Mr. Boolinger to address those vulgar remarks to king of Saudis or Kuwait , Bahrain, or presdint of Egypt, or Pakistan if He has the balls to do so.

We are demonized by the Western media that anti-whatever emanates from the Middle East part of Asia.  However, the speeches, cartoons, etc. act the same way that they are depicting us in racist manner.

What we write or say defines who we are.  You know you are better than what you are writing so do not abuse your freedom.

There are attempts to incite masses into waging a war against us.  Your e-mails could be used to start a war against innocent people who have nothing to do with the regime.  Remembering those students, who threw stones at Tehran University classrooms in 1970s, be careful of throwing stones because we all live in a glass house.  Sooner or later all of us will be affected by what is going on.

RE: It's just incredible... (by Rosie)

by Mina_Dadvarian (not verified) on

Dear Rosie,
For these so called "opposition" members, truth and fact is not an issue. The issue is that they do not want to see that the system that replaced the corrupt system of Pahlevi Dynasty srvive or live, even if that has the cost of destruction of Iran. Now I hope you can see why I believe the state of "opposition" to IRI Government is "sad". Very "sad" indeed. If you read just the thread in this articles and read their comments, you find that when you hold them to the same standards that they wish IRI government be held (in this case in terms of journalism and writings) they cannot stand it. They now accuse the creator of this web site (JJ) as being agent of mollahs! Unless you are willing to accept that you are dealing with a bunch of embicles and not intelligent beings as "opposition" members, you cannot justify their behavior.

It's just incredible...

by Rosie (not verified) on

...how some people think Soraya is a spokesperson for the IRI. Her writings on Iran are not much different than the thoughts of my 82 year old American mother, a Kerry supporter and I assure you no agent of Khameini. Soraya's views are lucid, but honestly they are fairly mainstream. How is it possible the Soraya mudslingers and I see things so differently?

Some Iranian expats are caught in a time warp where you see things in black and white and prevent any fruitful dialog. Over three years reading this site, I do not recall one single person here ever defending the repression of the IRI, though many in Iran have vowed to defend Iran from US attack. Can't you see what a disaster a US intervention would be?

Don't you see that Bush's sandwiching Iran between two US occupied countries was what caused the recent "fundamentalist" backlash in the first place? If the US just left Iran alone, the mullahs would die out like the dinosaurs they are. Let Iran take care of Iran. Thinking any good can come from a US attack on Iran, no matter how targeted to nuclear installations, is just plain dreaming. At best it plays right into the mullahs' agenda, as did Saddam's (US encouraged) attack on Iran. At worst Iran becomes another post 9/11 Iraq. That is the reality, and your compatriots at home keep trying to warn you of it.

Underneath it all almost everyone on this site wants the same thing, which is true parliamentary democracy in Iran. Can't you build coalitions instead of accusing people of being treasonous nose-jobbed whores? Sorry I'm so verbose but I've been quiet for too long, afraid to speak because I'm not Iranian. Now I'm so upset I can't shut up.

RE: Politics is the Art of the Possible (from Rosie)

by Mina_Dadvarian (not verified) on

Dear Rosie,
The baseless accusations and nonsense comments against Soraya that you see here is representative of the sad state of "opposition" to the IRI government. The saddest part is that "W" and his cronies actually take these people seriously (at least from their comments it appears so). If I were a mollah in Iran, I would be dancing during my prayer knowing that bunch of "idiots" are opposing me. According to those who have a better handle on these "oppositions" than I do, the opposition that appears on this site and attack anything and anyone that appears against their agenda are usually Monarchists and members of MKO. Knowing these grous as well I do, I feel bad for them. Wolrd has moved on, and these people are still stuck in stone age.

What is this “tribal Arab Islamists”? It seems you and a bunch of others think using f word, thick insults, and empty slogans will make your argument stronger, well it doesn’t!
Going back to your “tribal Arab Islamists”, Christianity and Islam both have their roots in Judaism which is by the way the religion of semitic people (tribal Arabs/Jews).
By the way, it is Ann Coulter the right wing fanatic Christian supporter of republicans that last week said ‘Jews Need to be Perfected’. Many of us Iranians not only don’t think that way, we are proud of our historical affinity with Jews from the time of Cyrus the great.

Politics is the Art of the Possible

by Rosie (not verified) on

So they say, and also, it makes strange bedfellows. I graduated from Columbia in 1980 and I think I had the greatest education in the world. Humanism and critical thinking formed me. I cringed when I heard Bollinger speak. This is not the Columbia I knew.

It wasn't Bollinger's content per se, as I too deplore much of Ahmadinejad's agenda, but rather Bollinger's rhetoric and hypocrisy. Bush wants to invade Iran and as I believe from my studies of Iran, that would lead to worse bloodshed in Iran than in the two years following the return of Khomeini (i.e., another Iraq), so it is to be avoided at all costs. That is my opinon. So Bollinger's comments at this crucial time made him a de facto lackey of Bush's policy in my eyes, and Bush has killed more people than Ahmadinejad and tortured as many by proxy. That makes Bollinger a dangerous hypocrital ideologue to me and a dishonor to my alma mater. Do my views make me an agent of the Guardian Council? Am I a "Faati Kommando" conspiring behind this screen in my chador against the forces of secular democracy?

No, I'm an American New Yorker, an artist and intellectual, something of a Social Democrat/Green, considered far left by many Americans but moderate by the true far left. I was not above voting for Mayor Bloomberg in 2002 when New York needed an economic boost, not above admiringng Ron Paul for his anti-Imperialist stance despite his privatization agenda. Does it make me a Republican? A Conservative? A Libertarian? A traitor to liberal causes? Not one single American has ever called me these things.

I don't get it. Just how many secret agents are there on this site? How many agents of the IRI, the Israelis, the pan-Turks, the SUMKA, the Russians, the Kurdish revolutionaries, are there here? I understand why Iranians are paranoid about these things after so many disinformation campaigns affecting the political future of the country in the 20th Century, but is EVERYONE who disagrees with some of you involved in some kind of James Bond global espionage intrigue?

And more to the point of this thread, actually, what on earth could I possibly care whether Soraya has a nose job, a good one or bad, or two or ten, or none at all, or whether in fact she sports a bright red plastic Bozo the Clown nose at parties? What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?

Please remember there are non-Iranians on this site who come here to learn about Iran. I believe that truth is complex, and that everyone has something valuable to say. But how can I HEAR you when you shout so loud? Attacking someone's physical appearance and using four-letter words makes you sound like a schoolyard bully and many thinking people are reluctant to put the future of the planet in the hands of schoolyard bullies.

If you don't like what Soraya Khanom has to say, respond civilly to her. She wrote civilly. Sway her of your opinion. Impossible, you say? She's hopeless, you say? Well, then, sway ME. I want to learn from you and I am more interested in the views of the people who disagree with me than those who agree with me, because the latter I already know.

But if all you have to teach me is about cosmetic surgery and the f- word then I cannot learn from you. I am pro-abortion. One of my closest friends is anti-abortion. Abortion is such a divisive issue in the States yet I have never called her a Papist rightwing nutjob and she has never called me a murderer. And certainly neither of us have ever broached the subject of cheek implants. Our political dialogs are made richer due to our differences.

People, we are on the precipice of major global cataclysms. The tone of these comments here is often disturbingly violent. And violence, like charity, begins at home. If we want to avert a bloodbath, we have to begin right here.

Zendeh baad Iraan. Zendegi bar Amrikaa. Damet garm. Peace.

9/11 An Inside Job?

by emergency_denier (not verified) on

Today (10/14/2007) there is an article in NYT which states that the Qwest phone company's former chairman has submitted documents to court indicating that 7 MONTHS BEFORE SEPTEMBER 11, 2001, NSA had been forcing his company and other phone co's to intercept phone calls without court warrent. Please see:

//www.nytimes.com/2007/10/14/business/14qwest...

This along with all other conspirecy theories we know adds another interesting angel to the suspecious that in fact US Government KNEW OR PLANNED (or both) the attacks of 9/11. Another interesting angel that has not received much attention was reported by Carl Cameron at the time I think with a local TV station in NYC and now reported with with FOX. In that report he stated on 9/11 after the attacks) (I was listening to his report) that 15 (don't recall the number now may be 16) Israeli nationals who were working as truck drivers and elivery people in NYC were caught by police (tipped by an old woman neighbor) tape recording the 9/11 attacks. When the videos tapes were uncovered and played by police, police had noticed that the recording has actually started 5 minutes or so BEFORE THE FIRST BUILDING was hit by a plane. While there are still hundreds in jails in NYC on supecioun, from the 9/11 days, these Israelis were let go back to Israel after only a week or so in jail. Peter Jennings followed that story on ABC (when he was still alive) and asked Dick Chaney's office why these Israelis were let go. The office of the VP said, "their mothers in Tel Aviv were missing them and wanted them back"!!! and so we released them!!!!
Folks, I am sure there are more documented evidence that indicate role and/or knowledge of US government in 9/11. Lets share and discuss. But please no made up stories. Lets go with documented and reliable sources.

Thanks

This Rashidian character is a koskhol. He was a cab driver in Tehran (he is a Kurd) came to Germany. Like other Kurds he beleives all iranians must die and only kurds should live in Kurdestan. They lick the israeli and US asses and have no credibility to offer anyone. Back to him: He gets drunks with bear all the time, and has been in Jail a few times. Once for murder, which turns out to be his cousins' act and not his. I was told he is now a factory worker at the lowest scale in Germany due to lack of proper education and training. Rashidian: What "IRI ties" ? You are being unreasonable

by Q on

of course I have read many of her other writings and I agree with almost all of them. My question was what in that writing gives you proof that she's an agent of IRI? I'm not pro-IRI, but I do not support a regime change from America, financed by America or enabled by America. I don't want America to help Iran at all or have any part in Iran's future. Does that make me pro-IRI in your opinion?

I have seen no evidence that Soraya is pro-IRI. I have seen plenty of places where she's been ACCUSED of being pro-IRI but always falsely. I think she's pro-Iran and very anti-War, and maybe anti-US.

So when you say "read it" you act like it's very obvious. It is not. That's why I have to question what specifically makes you think she's pro IRI. If you don't want to answer or you prefer making false accusations, that is your choice. But for your own credibility just share with everyone what makes you think she's pro-IRI.
