One of the joys of running this site has always been organizing letters to the editor. They are as raw and real as they can get. Look at these sweet letters to Googoosh BEFORE she decided to leave Iran and make a comeback. Or the honest debate about Bahais. Or reader's comments on the 20th anniversary of the revolution.
The reason why they are so much fun to read is that I almost never delete a comment, no matter how short, long, stupid or abusive it may be. That's what makes life colorful... variation. Each individual has unique tastes and view points and uses his or her own particular way to convey them. If you only leave in the polite ones or the ones you like, you exclude a chunk of the readership that is not only opposed to your thoughts but also angry, for one reason or another.
We live in a world where everybody is pissed about something. So instead of letting that anger grow, instead of ignoring it and pretend it doesn't exist, let's hear it and respond to it. Listen to everything -- or as much diverse voices as you can -- and you will gradually get to appreciate how wonderful tolerance is. You will stop hating people you disagree with. Instead of booing or punching them, you actually start to use your brain and try to put them down with the force of your own words.
And it is this exchange that does wonders. I'll be honest with you: I hardly ever agree with anything people write on this site but every single article or comment has had some impact on me, unconsciously. Can't help it.
Now where am I going with all this non-sense? Well, my point is that you need the greatest amount of freedom for the greatest possible diversity. So I am happy to announce that from this moment on EVERYBODY can leave a comment below articles, photos, cartoons, etc. You do not need to register.
We were hoping that most people would see value in registering. But since the launch of the new design, it has become apparent that the registration process has not appealed to average users. I got lots of feedback about this and the number one complaint was the need to register.
I heard you loud and clear! Your wish has come true.
The registration process is now required only if you want to start a blog or write articles on a regular basis. Otherwise you are free to roam and moan on the site all you want :o)

anonymous fossil joon: the blue space on the side appears on my lap top but not my desk top. I think it may have something to do with you screen resolution. Or text size under the view menu. check it out. If you can't, maybe a younger person around you might be able to hold you asaa and walk you throught it. But I agree that the text size should be a different font.
I still love it.

Some principles of democracy
by Sia - Bacheh Karadj (not verified) on Fri Sep 14, 2007 06:21 AM PDTIf a small community of supposedly educated, well-versed, and sophisticated Iranians can not debate and have polite discourse on Iranain.com and be an incubator for democracy then how in the world do expect those in Iran become democratic. Isn’t it a hypocrisy on our part not to adhere to the principles that we preach?
Now, before the so-called intellectuals in this forum begin beating their chests on the behalf of their beloved heroes be it Mosadeq, Imam Hossein, Shah, Rajavi, Stalin, Mao, etc., we must be brave enough to ask ourselves the following questions:
1. Are we perfect (e.g., are we Mr. knows all and Mrs. knows all!) or is there a possibility that we could be wrong? If we are wrong, do we have the ability and capacity to admit to being wrong?
2. Are we humble enough to admit to our mistakes and apologize?
3. Can we forget and forgive each other?
4. Can we reconcile our differences and build upon on our strengths?
5. Do we use facts, reliable data, and useful information when we debate?
6. Do we make it a habit to learn the principles of debate before we put our pen down or open our mouth? Listen and read before you talk!?
Finally, for those who want to restrict freedom of speech on Iranian.com. Trust me, the profanes, the repeaters, and the regurgitaters of the same beaten-up dead-mule story will go way.
So, to practice what I preach I volunteer to say that I am sorry and I apologize for being wrong and I love you all!

Although this new format makes it easier for me to post comments and gives me an incentive to make them more frequently, even I catch myself not being as faithful to the ever-so-valuable tenet KALAAMEH SHOMAA NESHAANEYE SHOUREH SHOMAAST.
fosh o foshkAri entezAr dAram farAvan bAshan motasefAneh.
Although ppl may post and comment less and overall activity may be less, if ppl really have something important to say, they will take the time to register and later on login each time they want to say it. Making it to easy both gets rid of a filler time for ppl to cool down before they send something obscene which is what registering/logging in gives them.

Anonymity
by afshin on Thu Sep 13, 2007 07:49 AM PDTSomeone once said that freedom without responsibility is anarchy. The problem with anonymous posting is that it is prone to spam, and abusive behavior by some of the less psychologically balanced users. I think in a few months times, you will see posting to dating sites, porn, and male enhancement drugs on every pages of commentary of this site. One can remain anonymous and register. But registering requires a certain amount of effort, that will weed out possible abusive people. Especially when it comes to inherently anarchist and non-conforming people like Iranians, your problems are only around the corner.
OIL PRODUCTION
by afshin on Thu Sep 13, 2007 07:38 AM PDTIran produces about 4 million barrels of oil a day, but that doesn't mean it exports all of it. About 2 million barrels a day are exported. The rest is used for domestic consumption. That is why Iran is trying to diversify it's energy resources. Because in 20 years time it will become a net energy importer! The Shah tried to do this in the 1970's but we saw what happened to him. This regime's end is coming near too. Not because of its undemocratic ways, but because it is not conforming to the whim of outsiders. Atomic power will be the Achille's heal of any ruler of Iran.

by Anonymous on Wed Sep 12, 2007 07:17 PM PDTJuts heard on NPR barrel of oil reached $80, highest ever. The thugs of the Islamic Republic of Mullahs (IRM) are jumping up and down since the increase in the price of oil means more money for them!
The IRM plunders the wealth of the Iranians based as much as $80x 365x 4.5 M barrels per day = $131.4 B a year!
If IRM paid 1% of this to its thugs in Europe, Canada, and America, that would be equivalent to $ 1.3 B (Billion) a year.
Of course, IRM pays according to skills and years of experience of each thug:
Hooder types get paid: $100 K a year since they have to travel to many conferences.
Dariush Abadi:$ 50K.

Elmo69: $10 K since he is a single digit IQ (cipher.)
