ABC News: On a special "This Week" town hall, Christiane Amanpour moderated a fiery debate over the place of Islam in America. The first question the "This Week" anchor put to her panelists on all sides of the issue was: should Americans fear Islam? Peter Gadiel, who lost his son in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, said that he would like nothing more than to not be afraid of Islam, but to ignore the "history of Muslim terror attacks," he said, would be unwise. Gadiel, who is a board member of the 9/11 Families for a Secure America Foundation, said "to ignore that threat is to ignore the history of Islam." Donna Marsh O'Connor, who lost her daughter in the 9/11 attacks, said that Americans should not live in fear of a whole group of people. "I think Americans should fear criminal behavior. I think we should do the best we can to control criminal behavior. But I can't raise my two remaining sons to fear the people who live next door to them. That is not what my grandparents came to America to escape," she said.

There is No Rosey Picture in History and NO ONE comes out Smelling Sweet Like Rose !
Everyone and Everything including Democracies and Democrats have a dark chapter in their lives because Humanity is Not Perfect. If it were we would all be Saints the way individuals like MOOS or Ahmadinejad Hypocritically claim the world should be forgetting to look in front of their very own doorsteps !
For after all every thing which is taking place in the 21st Century is Connected to the past and global History one way or another for better of for worse.
When our President demands Reparations during WWII or organizes a Holocaust Conference to deny it's existence all in an attempt to create a New World Order based on an alternative view of the World and it's values then you cannot simply dismiss these debates in the light of what we have learned from history.
I don't claim I have all the answers nor that my understanding of History if better or more accurate than that of Moose or Ahmadinejad but I claim that I do not draw the same lessons in the light of what I know including through my personal family history on the dark reality of WW2 as well as the history of my own country.
May I remind you that it is Ahmadinejad who brought all this into focus in the first place.
I don't blame him. It is an excellent tool for diversion from the current problems inflicting our country and the middle East in general.
And it is not surprising that Abbas Milani early On was subject to attacks by a future NIAC members like Hamid Dabashi or SF Chronichle Journalist Edwin Black on the question of the Holocaust Revisionism where these individuals wrongly blamed the Pahlavis :

And Who is Glenn Greenwald ? Definitively Not an Authority on WC
by Darius Kadivar on Mon Oct 04, 2010 02:16 PM PDTGreenwald was born on March 6, 1967, in New York City, where he still lives part of the year.[1][13] He earned a B.A. from George Washington University in 1990 and a J.D. from New York University Law School in 1994.[1] During law school, he worked as an intern and Summer Associate at the New York law firm of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, and after graduation, he practiced law in the Litigation Department at Wachtell, Lipton (1994–1995); in 1996 he co-founded his own litigation firm, called Greenwald Christoph & Holland (later renamed Greenwald Christoph PC), where he litigated cases concerning issues of U.S. constitutional law and civil rights.[1][13]
One of Greenwald's most notable First Amendment clients was Matthew Hale, a leader of the organization formerly known as the World Church of the Creator and now known as theCreativity Movement, who, on April 6, 2005, was sentenced to a 40-year prison term for soliciting an undercover FBI informant to kill federal judge Joan Lefkow[14] and incarcerated in theUnited States Penitentiary Administrative Maximum Facility (ADX) in Florence, Colorado.[15] Although he "represented Hale and his organization in several civil cases" and was not involved in Hale's criminal defense case, after the subsequent killing of Judge Lefkow's mother and husband while Hale was incarcerated for the earlier conviction, Greenwald was enlisted by Hale's mother, Evelyn Hutcheson, to deliver a purportedly "encoded message" from the imprisoned Hale to one of his supporters on the outside; but, despite believing that Hale had been wrongfully convicted and uninvolved in the more recent murders, Greenwald declined to do so ...

Churchill was born in 1874 into a Britain that was coloring the map imperial pink, at the cost of washing distant nations blood-red. He was told a simple story: the superior white man was conquering the primitive dark-skinned natives, and bringing them the benefits of civilization.
As soon as he could, Churchill charged off to take his part in “a lot of jolly little wars against barbarous peoples.” In the Swat valley, now part of Pakistan, he experienced, fleetingly, an instant of doubt. He realized that the local population was fighting back because of “the presence of British troops in lands the local people considered their own,” just as Britain would if she were invaded. But Churchill soon suppressed this thought, deciding instead that they were merely deranged jihadists whose violence was explained by a “strong aboriginal propensity to kill.”
He gladly took part in raids that laid waste to whole valleys, writing: “We proceeded systematically, village by village, and we destroyed the houses, filled up the wells, blew down the towers, cut down the shady trees, burned the crops and broke the reservoirs in punitive devastation.” He then sped off to help reconquer the Sudan, where he bragged that he personally shot at least three “savages.”
The young Churchill charged through imperial atrocities, defending each in turn. When the first concentration camps were built in South Africa, he said they produced “the minimum of suffering” possible. At least 115,000 people were swept into them and 14,000 died, but he wrote only of his “irritation that kaffirs should be allowed to fire on white men.” Later, he boasted of his experiences. “That was before war degenerated,” he said. “It was great fun galloping about" . . . .
[E]ven at the time, Churchill was seen as standing at the most brutal and brutish end of the British imperialist spectrum. This was clearest in his attitude to India. When Gandhi began his campaign of peaceful resistance, Churchill raged that he “ought to be lain bound hand and foot at the gates of Delhi and then trampled on by an enormous elephant with the new Viceroy seated on its back.” He later added: “I hate Indians. They are a beastly people with a beastly religion.”
This hatred killed. In 1943, to give just one example, a famine broke out in Bengal, caused, as the Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen has proven, by British mismanagement. To the horror of many of his colleagues, Churchill raged that it was their own fault for “breeding like rabbits” and refused to offer any aid for months while hundreds of thousands died.

Beyond the Vatican's Blunderous Choice of Pope Benedict

When I compare how we Muslims (Close family, extended family, acquaintances and co-workers) in Iran treated the Armenian and Jewish minorities in Iran then I see that we were far more human.
I guess we Muslims are not as advanced in the art of hypocrisy as the Chistians and Jews who reserve the right to look down their nose at Muslims and make condescending remarks towards them. The Jews and Christians are just very apt at creating a great image of themselves as being open-minded in their media and making their stupid masses believe that.

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Mon Oct 04, 2010 05:24 AM PDTyou are right. I was born in Iran and raised as a very moderate Muslim. I remember we had an Armenian carpenter working for us. One of my father's friends asked my father: "How could you let this najis guy in the house? Don't you have to then clean up anything he touches". My father to his credit was very upsed by this statement. He told me that sort of bigotry will "delesho cherkin mikoneh" i.e. "will hurt his feelings". Another friend of my father is Jewish Iranian. He said when a kid people avoided him when it rained. Because they worried he was najis and the rain splashing off him would make them najis or be more precise mote-najjis. There are not made up they are real. Bigotry against non Muslims in inherent in Islam.
Imagine you tell a kid from day one that non Muslims are unclean. That touching them requires you to wash up. How the heck could they be friends then? Islam is bigoted and Muslims complain about being discriminated against. Well I suggest they drop their bigotry and start there. Once they put their own house in order the rest will follow.
BTW: I live in the USA. The other day I went by the local "Halal" market. The place was far less hygienic than the Kosher places near where I live. Personally I will buy my meat from the Kosher place and take my chances with "Najis".

I am supressed minority raised in Iran
by Benyamin on Mon Oct 04, 2010 05:09 AM PDTI must say that I have seen first hand what Islam is about. There is something in Islam that makes people(even the so called moderates) to think different about non-muslims. We lived as muslims in Iran so all my friends thought I am just another muslim but even though living in an afluant area of Tehran and naturally mostly non practicing musilms yet my friends (mostly kids) didn`t share food with an Armenian kid I remember it clearly they were saying "he is najes"=he is unclean. Even at that young age I couldn`t understand it and certainly even now I understand it less. Because, these people didn`t act anything islamic but they did enforce some of "sharia`s" texts which made me confused and more not to reveal my true identity to even the closest of friends.
I amnot saying Islam is evil, but perhaps devilish ideas have been planted in it in 1400 years by extremests. I think extremesm didn`t just appear in the past few years. I believe it has been around for years and years.
How else my people survived? Why did they have to live as pretend muslim so they wouldn`t be killed? or get homeless? why in Islam the very first act they take up on is to seperate family members like females from the males and call it "halal" or that there are religious rewards if you take an "infidel`s" doaughter and make her muslim you get so much "savabs"? and Why the males get killed? what kind of religion is this?
I just can`t understand it when there are so many contradictions in one idealogy.

This in turn gives credibility to ther other side like Graham. The Iranian woman was the one voice of honesty.
Onthe matter of Churches: It depends on the nation. In SOME like Iran and Egypt: Yes it is possible to build them under exceptional conditions. And yes existing Churches are more-or-less safe. However in many like Saudi is it NOT. Plus actually getting the permissions and doing it is a huge task. Pkus preaching to Muslism is right out.
Islamists are pushing hard to get Islam into the west. They are trying to sell it to a suspicious population. It won' word and they are going to a big push back. The best option is to be honest about Sharia and Islam and try to reform it. That way at least they get to coexist. If not there will be a violent backlash which is both unfortunate and unnecessary.
