Home is where your heart breaks

I was overwhelmed at hearing hardship stories

10-Apr-2011 (8 comments)
I went to Khorramshahr by train and took my nephew’s wife because her mom is from Abadan and she had never seen that area. My cabin had all Abadanis which included a police woman. When she took off layer of black clothing the true Dokhtar Abadani was revealed. I was shocked to see latest skinny jeans, revealing top with English writings, and a fancy belt. I chuckled because looking at her chador and the head covering, I would have never guessed such fasionista existed underneath all that clothing>>>

Hugs, “farewell,” perfume, cloth, "passport, boarding pass,” more hugs, pistachios

The runway at the old Tehran airport did not run parallel to the visitors’ viewing area. After the passengers boarded, the plane, whistling quietly, trundled out of sight off to the side of the building. Visitors went back to their chatter while they waited for the metamorphosis to occur. The conversation was full of travel: “Don’t cry, he’ll be back before your tears are dry.” “On my last trip to Amsterdam...” “The best restaurant in Cairo...”>>>

Reinterpreting Iranian Pop Art with a new set of values

08-Apr-2011
The two art series that I am submitting relate to the culture of Iran during the 70s pre-revolution. The series "When Iran Went Pop!" was created back in early 2010, and the second series "Minimalist Posters for Iranian 70's TV Cinema Radio" I completed recently. Despite their appearance and titles the two series (that are closely related) are two conceptual works of Art disguised as a pop art and a minimalist series. I have used an Art school as a medium just as one might use tapestry or metal as mediums for conceptual work>>>

Has Ahmadinejad lost his working-class support base?

08-Apr-2011 (3 comments)
The Iranian economy is on a precipice. Ahmadinejad's new subsidies plan, which eliminates heavy discounts on fuel and food, has thus far pushed inflation to an annual rate of 15 percent, which may well rise further. The prices of important consumer and food staples have risen even faster; the price of bread has doubled, and gas prices have quadrupled. The government is attempting to alleviate the effects of increased prices by providing its citizens with handouts of cash. But by every indication, the economy is still going to get worse>>>

Which Road to Iran?

Before democracy can be ushered in, a culture of democracy must be developed

08-Apr-2011 (8 comments)
As revolutionary spirit is gaining momentum in the Middle East, it is only a matter of time before we see millions of Iranians take to the street demanding democratic change. The question is whether the US should seize the opportunity, at a time when Iran’s central government becomes vulnerable, to effect regime change militarily, through a coup, or other coercive methods? The Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution drafted in 2009 nine different policy options for dealing with Iran>>>

Choreographing of Iranian women’s migration

08-Apr-2011 (2 comments)
Much is written about Iranian women, Iranian films and Iranian women in Iranian film. But, the lives of Iranian immigrants in their new Western homes are rarely projected. In her debut film, The Neighbor, The New Yorker film editor, Naghmeh Shirkhan, takes a brave leap to make an elliptical narrative film about the rarely mentioned reality of Iranian women’s lives in ‘exile’. A dance instructor, struggling with memories of her mother and grandmother encounters her enigmatic neighbor Leila and her young daughter>>>

Searching for Tehran

We are more alike than different

I recently moved to New York City from Southern California. I left Iran for the United States to get a better international education and return to better my country, like so many of the Iranian diaspora now living in the States. I studied linguistics and planned to work for the Iranian Red Cross, The Red Lion and Sun Society. I planned on becoming an interpreter and attending international conferences to make sure my country would always be represented>>>

Psychological roots of the Islamic Republic

In this form of rule of an unhindered spiritual despot, which grounds on an image of man as being fundamentally dependent, there is no room for claiming individual independence in the sense of autonomy and self-control. Where the balance between self- and external constraints is being completely tilted towards external constraints, every claim for individual independence and autonomy equals "moharebe ba Khoda“ respectively "war against god“, which calls for capital punishment. Where each decision by the 'leader' as irrevocable 'command of the sovereign' and 'final word'>>>

Strangest things can happen in your local Middle Eastern market. I was pushing my shopping cart down the aisle while glancing at fast-moving images of the Libyan uprising on CNN. A few Arab men had huddled around the TV, quietly watching as events unfolded. As I turn my attention back to my shopping list, I noticed a Libyan acquaintance, standing by the pickle section, carefully studying the labels. Hoping for a quick getaway, I looked the other way and moved swiftly past him. “You Persians are bunch of pussies,” the Libyan whispered>>>
