How Stupid Were Saadi & Hafez?

Our pinnacles of wisdom and knowledge, Hafez and Saadi, suffered from a severe lack of curiosity and desire for exploration.  Both of these guys lived in Shiraz, a mere 70 kilometers, 43.5 miles away from the most important Persian / Iranian archeological site, Persepolis.  Yet, none of these fountains of wisdom appears to have EVER asked what these ruins were about!  I know, it’s hard to imagine, but none of these giants of Persian culture had the minimal level of curiosity to even ask what these “things” were.  They had a derive to take a mental journey to discover “irfan,” but were both apparently so intellectually lazy that they did not want to spend their energy in trying to figure out who they were, where they came from, or whether or not  those great ruins had anything to do with them.  Especially Hafez.  Didn’t he spend a lot of time chasing little boys?  Why couldn’t he spend the time to enlighten himself about the history of his nation and explore his backyard?

No wonder their followers are just as ignorant and stupid as they are.  They are unable or unwilling to read a comment properly, and even when it’s explained and spoon fed to them, they still write a blog that showcases their, intentional or unintentional, lack of understanding of what was actually discussed.

Our culture has a long way to go.  We must first reexamine our priorities, and specially- specially-reexamine our icons, role models and who we worship.  We are a people worshipping culture to begin with, and tend to get carried away with following human beings.  That tendency tends to seep into our understanding and reading of literature as well.  We don’t need to be a dead poet society to appreciate literature.  We don’t need to  grab our pitch forks and demand condemnation of cultural critics.  Hafez and Saadi and other dead poets were poets.  That’s all.  Nothing else, nothing more.  If anything, they suffered from a basic lack of curiosity.  If your culture is meaningless without them, then there is something seriously wrong with your culture.  Incidentally, putting great and overwhelming emphasis on poetry and literature is one of the reasons why we have fallen behind in technological progress and exploration.  That, and our obsession with Imam-e zaman and aftabeh!  Toilet paper is sufficient people.  You don’t need to stick your fingers up your rectums to achieve “taharat.”  Trust me, you won’t go to hell for it!

Seriously, if these are the people you emulate, and if these are the people who describe your indentity, be prepared to spend another one hundred years being a Third World nation of "sho'ar dahandeh."

Dear TS-9 - point well taken

by Anonymous Observer on

thanks for the advice.  You are always a voice of a reason in midst of attacks by the usual gang of marauding IR goons on my blogs.  to be honest with you, I have been planning on reducing my time on IC for a while to catch up with work.  The underlying premise of your comment is also appreciated.  The thing that bothers me the most is that most of these attacks would not even happen if the attackers actually read what I write and get to the actual point.  But hey, we're not where we are in Iran if our people were not hysterical (among many other issues).

Anonymous Observer

Is that why you have been attacking me for the past 24 hours?!!!

by Anonymous Observer on

You're interested in a "civil discussion?!!!".

You have too much arrogant, misplaced pride that is preventing you from having a civil discussion with others without resorting to attacks, name calling and profanity. Either that or you haven't taken your Prozac today! If you haven't, pleas make sure to do so before you go to bed.

Good night, and make sure to read some poetry before you go to bed. It relaxes you.

Disenchanted

AO good night....

by Disenchanted on

Just remember next time you think you have an idea to present it w/o insult and spice and you may get a better response. Using the words "s**t" " Stupid", "jew hating" and rest does not make for a civil discussion.

More importantly make sure youknow about the subject you write about specially if you attack it!

Sorry I was a bit harsh on you. But nothing personal. Just had to defend the Molaana Shamsoddin Mohammad Hafez Shirazi. Because part of my pride as an Iranian is because of him......

Anonymous Observer

Just so that there's no doubt remaining in anyone's mind

by Anonymous Observer on

I enjoy good poetry from whoever it is, Hafez, Saadi, Ferdowsi, etc. And no, I do not know all of Hafez's poems, but thats irrelevant. compliment good poetry, regardless of whose poem it is. And yes, I will praise a Hafez poem again and again and again....There's no doubt that both Hafez and Saadi were very good poets. But that has never been the subject of this blog.  And of course, Ebi's poem mentions Hafez's name in it.  No secert that it's a Hafez poem!!!

Anyway, my point is proven once again. These vicious personal attacks against me just proved the point of my blog.

Disenchanted

AO the poem that Ebi posted and you praised

by Disenchanted on

so dearly belongs to Hafez! Same Hafez that you called stupid on top of your blog! I just wanted to you and rest of readers know that how much you know about Hafez and his poetry and why you are the best to judge Hafez.

Disenchanted

Take it easy AO..relax

by Disenchanted on

Are you telling me you know all of the Hafez poems! Clearly you don't. Specially you had no clue this is Hafez. May be youthought it is Ebi's poem or someoen else but you had no clue that is Hafez!

In any case you are either lying or you are confused or both (most likely senario)!

Anonymous Observer

You flagged my comment to Ebi thanking him for the poem?!!!

by Anonymous Observer on

Hilarious!!!!

Anonymous Observer

Oh so now it's not "necessarily?!!!!"

by Anonymous Observer on

Up until now, I thought it was Ebi's, but now that you have been proven wrong, you change your tactic and it's not "necessarily?!!!". Here's a phrase that I don't use much: LOL!!!!

Disenchanted

you didn't think it is Ebi's poem necessarily

by Disenchanted on

but god, you had no clue it belong to Hafez and that's why you are so embarrassed and started insulting me and flagging my comments that point to your screw up! :-)

      OUCH!

Anonymous Observer

Ebi jaan - I'm sorry that you became a part of this abuser's

by Anonymous Observer on

Spectacle. Thanks again for your wonderful contribution and the wonderful poem that you posted. I really enjoyed reading it. Please post more if you wish, on this blog or elsewhere for me and everyone else to enjoy. As I told Anahid earlier, taking a break and reading poetry during work is quite refreshing.

Anonymous Observer

Where in this comment did I say the poem belonged To Ebi?

by Anonymous Observer on

Actually, I deleted this comment's content. I will let the readers judge your comments for what they are: simple abuse of a blogger.

Disenchanted

AO you are clearly so embarrassed with

by Disenchanted on

you praising Hafez poem after insulting him all day that you are flagging all my posts that mentions that! :-)

Yes bud, the poem that Ebi posted and you praised as wonderful and very nice was Hafez poem! Same Hfez that you called stupid on top of your blog!

Now see you flag this comment as well. You just want to erased all the trace.. :-) I understand!

Disenchanted

LOL! :-) embarrassing!

AO here is what you wrote with regard to Ebi:

wonderful poem to top off the night.  Very nice.

Thanks for your wonderful contribution.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Funny thing is that Ebi didn't come back because he realized you screwed up bad! So praising Hafez as "wonderful" and "very nice" while title of blog is "How stupid is Hafez?"  lol :-)

You know sometime people are asked what was your most embarrassing moment in your life?! Now you know that answer!

Anonymous Observer

Where did I say the poem was Ebi's?!!!!!

by Anonymous Observer on

Is that another symptom of your illiteracy and your basic lack of understanding of English? He posted a poem and I thanked him for it. And why don't you show us where I criticized the quality of Hafez's poetry.

Incidentally, the last line of the poem mentions Hafez by name.  FYI.  :-)))

What a ...

Disenchanted

AO, Clearly you are embarrassed....

by Disenchanted on

that's why you are showing your true colors now! You got my empathy! What could be more humiliating than attacking a poet all day and then in the evening mistaking Hafez poem with that of Ebi and praising it!! ;-)

                OUCH! OUCH!

I am not even going to flag your comments (if you can acll it that!). Lets see if admin blocks your id and rids IC from your vulgarity and blaring ignorant Blogs!

Truthseeker9

dear AO

by Truthseeker9 on

I wonder if it is productive to write a blog like this in a place like IC. I say this because I think you are an honest person and respect your integrity. Is it really best use of your intellect to write blogs that will alienate 50% of the people who come to this site, because they are writers and poets writing blogs? To use brutal language like "stupid" will take away from the blog the good points you are trying to make, like over emphasis of poetry in culture and things like that which perhaps they may agree to and admit to. Immediately people will jump on the severe stuff and treat you with lack of respect, which I dont think you deserve as a person. Honestly, is it worth it, this hassle, the insults? You have to judge the type of audience in this place - writers and artists and ask yourself whether this type of blog will get the result you wanted.

All it will do is cause you unnecessary grief while you could be better off dividing your time between sites where you are among like minded people and get something positive out of it. I assure you, you will not here. This is the wrong audience for this type of blog. Perhaps spend more time in scientific sites or others, and come here for news and politics. Honestly aziz, what is the point in giving yourself such a hard time and in the end getting alienated? I only say this out of care, not criticism.

Veiled Prophet of Khorasan

"crucified"

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on

How over dramatic.  I don't think so; no one did much other than giving  back the same medicine. Americans call it "taste of your own medicine". You call one stupid; someone else returns the favor.

Before you say "I thought you wee out of here". The other was my last post abut what Iranians have done. Which was totally non insulting and of course was ignored. Face it you bait people by insults and then cry foul when they insult you.

It is a classic method to make others look bad. In addition other posters put words in my mouth. This is by ascribing statements I never made to me. Then complain about me saying things I never said. You are out to make Iranians look bad and not winning.

Anonymous Observer

comment from TS-9 on another thread worth repeating

by Anonymous Observer on

Neither AO or I have been personal here, but expressed a view. I have seen you do the same with Islam,  Mohammed and Arabs among other things. NOTHING IS SACRED. I have read comments that are insults to AO, but noone seems to say anything. That is worse than expressing a view.

How true.  As I sadi there, I am being crucified for calling a long dead poet "stupid."  Can you imagine?!!!  What other culture on the planet would react this way?!!!  Think about it!

If Hafez, Saadi and Rumi, and particularly Hafez, were correctly understood there would have been no Islamic revolution.

very good point!

I thought you were done with this blog... :-))

by Anonymous Observer on

I am surprised that more folks condemn this illiterate attack on one of not only Iran but world's prominent poets and thinkers! SHAME o SHAME!

Yeah...you're right.  What a shame...I think you should write a letter to the UN and the International Criminal Court.  This blog is nothing short of genocide!!!  Or perhaps it's cyber poet-o-cide!

Seiously dude, don't leave.  Keep it coming.  Can't make this stuff up!!!!  Free entertainment.  :-))

Disenchanted

Only those who don't understand Hafez find him stupid

by Disenchanted on

       Literary critic,

You got it. These folks can't even read Hafez! Ask AO to even read a couple of verses and he comes to tears. It is a shame that a college kid can sit behind a laptop and insult things he has no clue about and then brag about being a rebel and invite others to "soul search"!

         AO bud,

"Soul search" you need badly, but for now do a bit "Google search" and "try" just "try" to see if you can understand Hafez with your meager intelligence!

I am surprised that more folks don't condemn this illiterate attack on one of not only Iran but world's prominent poets and thinkers!

SHAME o SHAME!

Anonymous Observer

Also, a false analogy disjointed

by Anonymous Observer on

Your hypothetical would be true if I had called YOU and other commenters stupid and then asked you to reflect.  Instaed, I called people whom you hold dear and emulate stupid.  So, in your hypothetical, I should have called the homeowner's idol stupid and aksed him why he worships that idol.  has nothing to do with his winodw...or yours for that matter.

Speking of stupid, did you understand what I just said, or do I have to repeat it again and again and again --like what I have been doing for you since yesterday--for it to sink in?

He said something like: "iranians, especially abroad are fighting about the name of the gulf, cyrus the great, hafez and other irrelevant cultural aspects, but they don't know what is going on in Iran or how to change it..."

Deaf Ears

This is my third and last attempt. My immediate family has filed a dozen patents in USA. Founded two profitable companies and tried a bunch of others. I may list Iranians again and again with inventions and so on.

But no point because it is like talking to a rock. I get the same response every time: nothing. Then as if a broken record  same thing repeats "what have Iranians done". Well if you read my posts you would know. Better do some research and find out.

A person who asks something is responsible to have done some research. Plus when you get a response the person must  either acknowledge or refute it. By ignoring it they admit to being wrong.
