Iran beats Iraq 2-1 and advances to West Asian Cup Final on Sunday.
Iran was the better team, but the defense gave away an easy goal again. They need to tighten up if they want to look respectable against Brazil.
There were a lot of fouls, trash talk and hair pulling by the Iraqis and the small crowd was cheering them. One of the Iraqi defenders was red carded.
The feelings between the Arab Street and the Iranians are definitely mutual!
The final will be against the winner of Yemen – Kuwait match (later on today) on Sunday morning.

Red WineSun Oct 03, 2010 02:45 PM PDT

by yolanda on Sat Oct 02, 2010 04:17 PM PDTThere is no doubt that the bottom line set by IFF is that Qotbi has to bring home the title:
//news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100921/sp_soccer_afp/fblirijorwaff
Article highlights:
"We are expecting to come home as champions, we have learned to think of winning in all circumstances. I only plan for victory," Ghotbi said, adding that team spirit in his squad was high.
Ghotbi said that taking part in the WAFF championship would be a good practice for the Iranians ahead of the Asian Cup 2011.
His comments on the reason for Team Melli participating in the WAFF's tournament were echoed by the chairman of Iran's Football Federation Ali Kafashin.

by mash Ghanbar on Sat Oct 02, 2010 04:02 PM PDTYour theories are way over my head man:))
I think you are twisting this thing beyond the necessarily level. the fact that teams' performances are tied to their level of nationalism does not make this about politics at all. the same goes for the coaches. mental readiness means all the preparations made for the game regardless of the politics involved.
2- Not necessarily true. being physically prepared has to do with how much determination players display or whether or not they can take themselevs to a higher level. Coah may or may not be a crucial factor in all of this.
You are really not a soccer fan , are you?::)) i mean you don't watch the game for the sake of seeing a bunch of guys putting up an honest-to-goodness, from the bottom of your heart soccer, do you?
Hi Yolanda,
by Midwesty on Sat Oct 02, 2010 03:04 PM PDTI think, the head of IFF is pulling out his intimidation card to keep Ghotbi in check. (I call this Iranian management style). This is like telling the parachutist, your parachute might not deploy, right before he wants to jump out of the plane!
I wonder if the Sharia law could apply in soccer the IFF head could be tried at the same level of Sakineh Ashtiani, punished by balling him to death. Maybe not, since the head of IFF is approved by the head of WFF.
.....
by yolanda on Sat Oct 02, 2010 01:48 PM PDTHi! Midwesty,
If team Melli does not win the final, IFF can release Qotbi also......we will see.......I hope they can beat Kuwait! Iran ranks #57, Kuwait #96 on the FIFA world ranking......the odds is pretty good!

Quiet the opposite! To me:
1- The national teams are anchored around the nationalism. That's the main motivator for the coaches. I guess we always lack this in soccor. (Mental readiness)
2- The more money and autonomy you assign to the head coach and the team the higher physical preparedness you achieve for the team.(Techniques and Tactics)
Thanks Yolanda!
by Midwesty on Sat Oct 02, 2010 01:24 PM PDTIf it wasn't for shooting ourselves in the foot like this we have always had chances in sports.

by mash Ghanbar on Sat Oct 02, 2010 12:47 PM PDTGood Job Undermining arabs! Do you really think you are stating some facts in here?
I follow soccer and wouldn't you know it, The thought of this notion of complexity would not not even dawn on me. Gee . I must not know what i am watching?!
I have to say, Iraquis were much more prepared for the game both on the mental and physical level, regardless of who and from what background was coaching either side. The goal they scored, would have screamed in your face, to any opponent,. It was soprecise and so technical.
you know, i seriously doubt that someone who really loves the game and watches it for justthat reason, truly takes into consideration the geopolitical and historical animosity and bad blood between iranian and arabs , as a factor,
so with that in mind, farda sob saat chan pashim belakhare?:))
Roozbeh,
by Midwesty on Sat Oct 02, 2010 12:05 PM PDTI don't appreciate your Iranian-ness attribute of indirectly replying to my comment while implying a loaded comment to me.
As you said, you don't understand soccer!
It is evident to people who often follow the soccer, the level of complexity involved when Iran plays against one of these Arab teams. The complexity even go beyond what has ever been seen from arch nemesis, Israel in the sports arenas.
The Arab governments have always felt inferiors to Iranians and the only field they could find themselves rising against her power was in the field of sports where their money could make up for what their willpower could not.
