I'm so thrilled I don't know what to say!
I received confirmation today that one of my favorite musicians of all time, the great Faramarz Aslani, has agreed to be our main guest at the iranian.com fundraising event on April 25 in San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts.
Can you believe it? I can't!
The first time I heard Aslani's wonderful ballads was a decade and half after he became a phenomenon in Iran. When he came out with songs like "Ageh Yeh Rooz", "Yaaram Koo", "Del Aseereh" and... I was in high school in the U.S. and out of touch with Iranian music.
It was only when I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area that I noticed what I had missed. I would go to parties at the home of my Iranian friends and at some point people would start singing his ballads word for word by heart. Just a few months ago my good friend Shahrokh had his little music festival in Seattle and guess whose music was the most popular? Aslani! It just goes to show you the timeless quality of his large body of work.
And now he's going to perform for iranian.com?! You have no idea how I feel inside... I'm all mushy and teary-eyed.
There's more!
The wonderful and super talented composer/pianist Sahba Aminikia has graciously agreed to be the opening act of the evening. Have you heard his amazing "Pro Patria" based on "Ey Iran!" by Ruhollah Khaleqi? This man has a great future ahead of him.
So come on down on April 25 and enjoy a magnificent and memorable show. You will be greatly entertained and giving support to your favorite website. We will soon have ads and links where you can purchase your tickets.
But I'm not done! We have another wonderful surprise in store for you. I just can't talk about it right now. Stay tuned :o)

Surprise
by Anonymous Observer on Fri Mar 06, 2009 02:20 PM PSTWell, JJ, I know that we agreed that we will keep it a secret, but I just can't have your readers guess any longer...they're at the edge of their seats. So, sorry, but I'll just go ahead and tell them who the surprise artist is:
it's me!!!!! I will be doing a rendition of Delaksh's "emshab shab-e mahtabeh" in heavy metal. Lars Ulrich of Metallica will be on the base and Shawn Drover of Megadeath will be on the drums. I, with my heavenly voice (actually, it's been compared to a cross between nails scratching on a blackboard and the noise of a jackhammer), will be the lead singer. If you have requests for any other songs, please send them to me, and I will be glad to perform them as well :-).
PS, obviously this is a poor attempt at a joke. No attacks please :-).
the way I saw it
by bajenaghe naghi on Fri Mar 06, 2009 02:01 PM PSTwas that jj mentioned a surprise was coming and ali said if it was sahamaeezadeh. i don't think ali meant anything bad or rude.

The King of My Heart
by Party Girl on Fri Mar 06, 2009 10:02 AM PSTFew artists face an adoring audience who knows ALL their lyrics and sings along with them. Aslani concerts are superb, because they are a "sing-along fest!" Searching YouTube, you will find that Aslani's songs are the most re-played and re-recorded by young Iranian artists inside and outside Iran. Something about the melodies and love lyrics is timeless. Here's an example of how this audience (I think this was in San Francisco in 2007) reacts to him. Sorry, it's not the best quality, but it's fairly representative. You lucky bastards!
Good For You JJ!
by sbglobe on Fri Mar 06, 2009 10:00 AM PSTJJ jan khate nabashe ….. I KNOW all your hard work will pay off by April 25 and you and your team will deliver an outstanding event. Also, my respect for you just went up a few notches …. Only if we all could know (and practice) to admit when we are wrong. Again khate nabashe and if I lived in Bay Area, I sure would have offered you my help. Best Wishes
JJ I wouldn't do it for 40k/mo
by Bahram G on Fri Mar 06, 2009 09:53 AM PSTI don't know how you do it, JJ. How do you manage to stick with iranian.com. You strike me as a very feeling person and this line of work is devastating to feeling people. You certainly are not doing this work for the $4k a month. I wouldn't do it for $40k/mo. I mean, I really couldn't do it and I wouldn't last a month to collect my paycheck.
And it isn't that you don't have the talent to pull in a lot more than $4k/mo doing other things. And I am not buttering you up. I just vicariously feel your pain. Would thanking you, like many other caring friends do, help? I will also attend the SF fundraiser, if for nothing else just to thank you in person.
Sepaasgozaram,
Bahram G

by D (not verified) on Fri Mar 06, 2009 09:08 AM PSTI still think the Shamaaeezadeh reference was a reference to LA's music scene. Oh well.
Love you too
by Jahanshah Javid on Fri Mar 06, 2009 08:57 AM PSTAli Jan, thanks for your note. I took your original comment the wrong way and I am very sorry for my outburst. I've worked my ass off trying to put this event together, on top of working on iranian.com and the stress has been tremendous. My reaction was uncalled for. Love you too honey.
The best love songs
by Shohreh (not verified) on Fri Mar 06, 2009 08:51 AM PSTThere are love songs and there are love songs. Aslani's love songs have a gentleness and beauty that few can match. The melodies are just out of this world. If you cannot singalong to a song, you won't remember it, and that's what's missing in a lot of music today. But Aslani we will remember forever. I wish there were more like him.

If my comment has offended you, I, Ali P., here, today , in front of the whole Iranian.com community, extend you my most sincere apology.
I am certainly one of your bigger fans, and someone who knows how much time, money, passion, sweat and hard work, you have invested over the years to create this wonderful website.
But I cannot help wondering, if I would have faced the same reaction from you, and a few others, if my comment was slightly different.
I have to tell you I was totally lost when I read, that my three-words comment, was interpreted to ""Pah! een digeh cheh ashghaaliyeh? Bezar dar koozeh abesho bokhor!" by you.
Some took the comment as a joke, and got offended. Some, including you, took it as a serious one, and got, disappointed, shall we say?
In your exchange with Souri , you mention that you took my comment as a serious one("Souri Khanom, Ali is not joking at all"-JJ)
Let's go with that. Let's say I am a huge Shamaaeezadeh fan (and in fact, I am). What if my comment, regarded not a I-guess-lousy-in-your-eyes-singer like Shamaeezadeh, but a cool one, such as Namjoo.
Close your eyes, and imagine,...(well, not right now,..after reading this paragraph) :
You tell us, a great artist, such as Mr Aslani is coming, and wait, there is another surprise appearance by another super-cool singer. And I, trying to guess who it is, say:
Naamjoo?
Margeh man?
Would you have, then, found my comment as mocking you?Would you then be upset or disappointed? Would you then view me as "inconsiderate"?
Anyway. I am very excited for you and this gathering. I wish I could be there. Congratulations, and I cannot wait to read the report, and see the pictures, and most impotantly, watch his performance.
I love you, and I am addicted to your blogs .
Yours,
Ali P.
Souri khanoom, khodaa begam chekaaret koneh! :-)
Marge man
by Souri on Fri Mar 06, 2009 08:17 AM PSTWas a joke. that's why I laughed. then what?
Hope we wont eternalize this subject. I value Mr Aslani a lot. I like JJ and appreciate all his effort for this event. and I like Ali agha too. Let not get offended by the small petty jokes.
I got Ali agha's remark as a teasing. It came after the over-excitement of JJ (the title).......nothing offensive to anybody.
These kind of misunderstanding happen sometimes between a group of friends in a gathering. Let get over it, please.
Souri
by D (not verified) on Fri Mar 06, 2009 07:54 AM PSTThe problem is "marge man?". Is that a joke or not? I think it is, regardless of Ali's denial later. He meant it as a joke to trivialize this event, I think. This is why JJ took offense to it, I thinks ;o)
So??
by Souri on Fri Mar 06, 2009 07:43 AM PSTAli is not joking at all.....So what?
If people hadn't respond to him so aggressivley, it could be taken as a joke for many of us, or at least was taken as his own opinion. What's wrong with that?
You always seemed to be a so cool guy, what's going wrong?
No joke
by Jahanshah Javid on Fri Mar 06, 2009 07:37 AM PSTSouri Khanom, Ali is not joking at all. Did you read his second comment:
"I did not put any "LOL" or ":-)" anywhere, hinting it to be a joke, so as far as any reader is concerned, this should be taken as an honest, serious comment."
Super sensitivity
by Souri on Fri Mar 06, 2009 07:32 AM PSTOne thing I really dislike in Iranian men (yes I am generalizing) is this super sensitiviy when it comes to their ego. This is something very common in all Iranian male!! Where does it come from?
This is what I call a super over reaction to a petty remark. All these irritating response, to a small joke? JJ, you need to rest a bit. Happy Birth Day again

by Mehrnaz (not verified) on Fri Mar 06, 2009 07:18 AM PSTKhosh be haaletoon!! It sounds fantastic, I am very jealous ... but wish you all who are lucky enough to be there to enjoy it and raise some good "dough" ... for the bread we eat together ...
To JJ : my best wishes to you
by Anonymous4645545 (not verified) on Fri Mar 06, 2009 06:22 AM PSTGood thing you invited a male singer and not a female, at least the majority Islamists on this site who would like to participate, would not be offended or shy away from attending.
JJ Aslani is wonderful but I'm lost!
by Monda on Fri Mar 06, 2009 05:29 AM PSTWhat was so offensive about Ali P.'s comment on your next surprise?! What is wrong in being hopeful to see Shamaaeezadeh on stage that night?! I have only read sensible intelligent contributions from Ali P., I don't know him personally but I feel I do. How did you take his suggestion as an attack to this site?!!
You sound like you have lots going on related to the BIG event coming up. It is very exciting! And on behalf of my household and some of my local extended family, we can't wait! We also can't wait to find out who might your other surprise be? But we're not gonna mention any names here :o)
JJ, Since when have you
by Anonymous34 (not verified) on Fri Mar 06, 2009 02:55 AM PSTJJ,
Since when have you become such a sensitive and fragile soul? Mr 'Nothing is sacred'. You are earning your dough or 'dough' through differences of opinions (sometimes even propagating them rather stealthily if I may say so). How come someone stating a benign difference bothers you this much? Okay, in order to put what Ali said right, you have done great, Aslani is the 'the end of cool', anything anyone else says is ...
Regards
A little consideration
by Jahanshah Javid on Thu Mar 05, 2009 10:36 PM PSTAli P.,
You have every right to say whatever you feel.
But consider this: Let's say you decide to create a website for the Iranian community. You put months of hard work into it and spend thousands of dollars. When it's done, you write a blog all happy and excited and you tell your friends to come and see it. Then I go and post the first comment: "Pah! een digeh cheh ashghaaliyeh? Bezar dar koozeh abesho bokhor!"
How would that make you feel?
