Introduction: Despite the fact that the famous chemist, RAZI, was Iranian, like many other Iranian eminent figures, he is often considered as an Arab in the Western and Arabic literatures. (Arabs have also intentionally added prefixes as al-, abu-, -ibn, etc. to the names of many famous Iranians to mislead the readers). Mohammad Zakariya RAZI (also known to the West as RHAZES) was born on 27 August 865 AD. That was the era when Tahirids (821-873) were ruling in Khorasan, the northeastern part of Iran, and Moustaiin (862-866) was the Abasid Caliph in Baghdad. Razi was born in Ray and in Persian language, RAZI means a person who is from Ray. Ray (also spelled as Rayy) is the most historic city in the province of Tehran, Iran. The city is estimated to be more than two thousand years old, and was built during the Median Empire (728 BC-550 BC).

His Life: It is documented that early in his life RAZI was interested in Singing and Music besides other professions. Because of his eagerness for knowledge, he became more interested in the study of Chemistry, Medicine, Philosophy, Logic, Mathematics, Physics, and Foreign Languages (Greek, Hindu, Arabic, and others). One tradition holds that RAZI was already a chemist before he gained his medical knowledge. RAZI was a liberal and generous man, and so compassionate to the poor and sick that he used to transfer his knowledge to them freely and even nurse them himself.

His Works: As a Chemist, he possibly developed his knowledge independently from Jabir Hayyan (Jabir in Latin: Geber), who was one of the most notable Iranian scientist. (Hayyan was born in 721 in Tus of Khorasan in Iran and died in 815 in Kufah in present-day Iraq). RAZI's description of chemical knowledge is in plain and plausible language. One of his books called Book of Secrets (Kitab-e Asrar) deals with the preparation of chemical substances and their utilizations. He went beyond his predecessors in dividing substances into Plants, Animals, and Minerals (PAM), thus in a way opening the way for Inorganic and Organic Chemistry. By and large, this classification of the PAM still holds. As a chemist, he was the first to produce Sulphuric Acid (SO4-H2) together with some other acids, and he also prepared Alcohol (C2H5-OH) by fermenting sweet products. RAZI believed one could live in an orderly society without being terrorized by religion laws. Certainly the precepts of Islamic law, such as the prohibition of alcohol (C2H5-OH), did not trouble him in the least. RAZI felt that it was through human reason that human life could be improved, and not through religion. RAZI is of exceptional importance in the history of chemistry, since in his books one can find for the first time a systematic classification of carefully observed and verified facts regarding chemical substances, and their reactions, described in a language almost entirely free from mysticism and ambiguity. As related to the science of Chemistry, RAZI also contributed to the early practice of pharmacy by compiling texts, but also in various other ways. Examples are the introduction of mercurial ointments, and the development of apparatus and tools like mortars, flasks, spatulas and phials, as used in pharmacies until the early twentieth century.

His End: He was always reading or writing. His eyes were always watering (on account of his prolonged reading and writing or excessive consumption of some foods), and he became blind towards the end of his life. At 60, he died in his native town, Ray, on 26 October 925. That was the time when Nasr II (914-943) of Samanid dynasty was ruling in a part of Iran and present-day Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. Some documents also indicate that RAZI passed away in 930, which is unlikely.

Razi in Iran and other Parts of the World: Like many other great scholars of Iranian origin, RAZI is the author of hundreds of erudite books and his scientific works are extremely remarkable. His portrait still adorns the great hall of the Faculty of Medicine in Paris, France. In present-day Iran, RAZI Day or Pharmacy Day is commemorated every August 27. His name is also commemorated in the RAZI Institute (founded in 1925-26), which also refers to as the Iran's Serum and Vaccine Production Center or Iran's RAZI Research Institute (IRRI). IRRI is located at the town of Karaj, 40km west of Teheran, on the Ghazvin-Hessarak road. Other subsidiaries of IRRI are established in Ahwaz (in Khuzistan province), Mashhad (in Khorassan province), and Shiraz (in Fars province).
Many primary- and high-schools in different cities of Iran are also named after him.

Epilogues (Posted August 2012)
1. In medicine, the contribution of Razi was so significant that it can only be compared to that of   Avicenna (Pur Sina). Some of his well-known works in medicine are Ketab-e Mansouri, Ketab-e Hawi, Ketab-e Mulouki and many others that earned him everlasting fame. A special feature of his medical system was that he greatly favored treatment through correct and regulated nutrition. This was combined with his emphasis on the influence of psychological factors. Razi also tried remedies first on animals in order to evaluate their effects and side-effects. He was also an expert surgeon and was the first to use opium for anesthesia (View here). 2. ابوبکر محمد بن زکریاء بن یحیی الرازی فیلسوف و طبیب بزرگ ایران و از مشاهیر علمای جهان و یکی از نوابغ روزگار قدیم است.ولادت او در شعبان سال ۲۵۱  در ری اتفاق افتاد و در همین شهر به تحصیلات ژرف خود در فلسفه و ریاضیات و نجوم و ادبیات مبادرت کرد و بعید نیست که توجه او به تحصیل علم کیمیا نیز در ایام جوانی صورت گرفته باشد. رازی در ما بعدالطبیعه معتقد به وجود  ۵ قدیم بود یعنی خالق،نفس کلی،هیولی اولی،مکان مطلق یا خلاء و زمان مطلق یا دهر.برخی از علمای قدیم مانند اما فخر رازی معتقدند که رازی اعتقاد به قدماء خمسه را از حرانیان گرفته لیکن حقیقت امر آنست که عقیده مذکور بعد از رازی میان حرانیین راه یافته.ابوریحان بیرونی هم هنگام نقل قول رازی در قدمت پنج چیز گفته است که وی اعتقاد خویش به قدماء خمسه از یونانیان گرفته اما ظاهر امر اینست که در این باب از معتقدات فلسفی ایرانیان استفاده کرده است.ابن حزم در کتابی که بر رد کتاب العلم الالهی رازی نوشتخ بود این اعتقاد رازی را که به نظر او از مجوسان گرفته بود رد کرد. رازی نسبت به اکثر مذاهب هم راه انتقاد پیش گرفت و این انتقاد خود را نسبت به بهضی از آنان مثل دیصانیه و محمره و مانویه و مذاهب غالیه شیعه بشدت آشکار کرده و برای اظهار مخالفت خود به نوحده اعم با همه ادیان دو کتاب معروف النبوات معروف به نقض الادیان و کتاب حیل المتنبین معروف به مخاریق الانبیاء را نگاشت که مدت ها بعد ار رازی هم مایه خشم مسلمین و تکفیر آن فیلسوف بود.از این دو کتاب اکنون اثری در دست نیست اما متکلم و داعی بزرگ اسمعیلی ابوحاتم الرازی مولف کتاب مشهور اعلام النبوة متن مناظره خود را با محمد بن زکریا در باب نبوت آورده است و عقاید رازی را در آنجا ذکر کرده است و پیداست عقاید عقاید رازی در این کتاب همان است که در نقص الادیان یا کتاب النبوات آمده است.اصول عقاید رازی بنابر نقل ابوحاتم این است که: خداوند همه بندگان خود را مساوی خلق کرده و هیچکس را بر دیگری برتری نداده است و اگر بگوییم که برای راهنمایی آنان حاجت به انتخاب کسی داشت حکمت به بالغه وی می بایست چنین اقتضا کند که همه را به منافع مضار آنی و آتیشان آگاه سازد و کسی را از میان ایشان بر دیگران برتری ندهد و مایه اختلاف و نزاع آنان نگردد و با انتخاب امام و پیشوا باعث آن نشود که هر فرقه تنها از پیشوای خود پیروی و دیگران را تکذیب کند و با نظر بغض بدان بنگرد و جماعات بزرگی بر سر این اختلاف از میان بروند.معجزات متنبیان نیز چیزی جز خدعه و نیرنگ نیست و غالب آنها هم از مقوله افسانه های دینی است که بعد از آنان پدید آمد.مبانی و اصول ادیان با حقایق مخالفت و مغایرت دارند و به همین سبب هم میان آنها اختلاف زیاد دیده می شود و علت اعتماد و اعتقاد مردم به ادیان و اطاعت از پیشوایان مذهبی تنها عادت است.ادیان و مذاهب علت اساسی جنگها و مخالفت با اندیشه های فلسفی و تحقیقات علمی هستند.کتابهایی که به نام کتب مقدس آسمانی معروفند کتبی خالی از ارزش و اعتبارند و آثار کسانی از قدما مانند افلاطون و اقلیدس و بقراط و ارسطو خدمت مهمتر و مفیدتری به بشر کرده است.کتاب نقص الادیان رازی بی تردید حاوی شدیدترین حملات به ادیان بوده است که در تمام ادوار قدیم و در وسطی صورت گرفت. بر اثر حملات شدید رازی به ادیان،خشم جمع بزرگی از علمای اسلامی بر ضد او بر انگیخته شد.جمعی او را متطبب خواندند و حق ورود در مباحث فلسفی ندادند،گروهی وی را ملحد (ابوحاتم رازی)، نادان (ناصر خسرو)، جاهل (ناصر خسرو،موسی بن میمون الاسرائیلی،مرزوقی) ،مهوس بی باک (ناصر خسرو)، غافل (ناصر خسرو) و سخنان او را دعاوی و خرافات بی دلیل ه (ابن حزم)، هوس (ناصر خسرو)  و هذیانات (  موسی بن میمون) خواندند...ه منبع:ه تاریخ علوم عقلی در تمدن اسلامی تا اواسط قرن پنجم؛ دکتر ذبیح الله صفا؛انتشارات دانشگاه تهران؛ چاپ پنجم (۱۳۷۴)ه

محمد زكرياي رازي در كتاب گمانها و شبهه های جالينوس پس از معرفي نظريه‌ي اتمي دموكريتوس و نقد نظر مخالفان او ، نظريه‌ي اتمي خود را معرفي كرده است. او معتقد بود كه هيولاي مطلق پيش از خلقت عالم (يعني ماده‌ي پيش از پديد آمدن هستي) عبارت بود از ذرات تجزيه‌ناپذير (اتم‌ها) . اتم‌ها به نسبت‌هاي مختلفي با خلاء آميخته‌اند و عناصر را پديد آورده‌اند. ويژگي‌هاي عناصر گوناگون از نسبت‌هاي متفاوت ماده و خلاء بر مي‌خيزد چنانكه عناصر سنگين ، مثل خاك و آب ، ميل حركت به مركز زمين دارند ، در حالي كه عناصر سبك، مثل هوا و آتش ، كه نسبت خلاء در آ‌ن‌ها بيشتر است، به سوي بالا حركت مي‌كنند. به نوشته‌ي كارشناسان بنياد فيزيك آمريكا ، مانند اين نظريه را ٨٠٠ سال بعد جان دالتون پيشنهاد كرد.

Razi wrote three books dealing with religion, The Prophets’ Fraudulent Tricks (مخارق الانبياء),The Stratagems of Those Who Claim to Be Prophets (حيل المتنبيين), and On the Refutation of Revealed Religions (نقض الادیان). He offered harsh criticism concerning religions, in particular those religions that claim to have been revealed by prophetic experiences. Razi asserted that “[God] should not set some individuals over others, and there should be between them neither rivalry nor disagreement which would bring them to perdition.” He argued,
