Nematollah Aghasi (1939-2005) brought more joy to Iranians than any ruling Mullahs ever have. He died on this day four years ago. Below is my translation of his most famous song.
Ameneh - by Aghasi
My heart, saddened from your spite
In my chest, sadness reside
My heart’s dwelling, destroyed from sublime
Why is this tradition of the time!
Ameneh, your eye, my wine’s chalice
Ameneh, your frown, my pain and malice
My life is on fire from your deed
Your passion won’t leave my heart, indeed
Ameneh, my heart, for you it beats
Ameneh, don’t afflict, my heart bleeds
Ameneh, your name is my pain and misery
Ameneh, without you, my heart, my life’s agony
My heart gone mad with your mystery
My life drowning for your necessity
Your affected manner, my wine cover
O by God! Your manner!
Ameneh, your name is my pain and misery
Ameneh, without you, my heart, my life’s agony

Sousan :(
by capt_ayhab on Fri Nov 06, 2009 11:02 AM PSTMany thanks to all who posted songs of Sousan.
Harchand I did not care for her style much, but I so respected the woman who came from extremely sad past, made an everlasting name for herself, but sadly died in obscurity, and penniless.
It brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to her songs, and remember the hardship that she went through. I realize in those moments that WE as Iranians, do not take care of our artists in their times of needs. Artist like Sousan who introduced a music style that was so unique to her times, which surly affected the Iranian music in a profound way.
Her low smoky voice had this certain sadness to it which hit the cord in every ones heart and soul.
Bless your soul Sousa, be in peace, some people only get a break when they go to heavens. :(

Congratulations my dear MPD!
by Azarin Sadegh on Fri Nov 06, 2009 10:54 AM PSTI can't believe that this blog has more comments than other blogs about the green movement or about Reza pahlavi!!!
Congratulations my dear friend! You are a true genius!
BTW, I almost fainted last night...but I talked to Pamuk, gave him my story, even did a short interview on an obscure Turkish TV about Pamuk!! He was the most charming man...
But going back to the subject of your blog: Aghassi, the man who could sing, jump, shake, clap, and at the same time move his ears.
Ok I AM KIDDING! Don't kill me...
Joking aside, I have the most respect for Aghassi because he was a true "mardomi" singer, coming from the poorest and taking a whole country by his charm...a real self-made man. Actually, I saw him a few years ago in LA, and he was a great entertainer. He seemed sweet, down to earth and humble... and we all danced and everyone went crazy and had a good time. R.I.P. Aghassi!
Az.

Thank you bahram9821. Although I've hardly ever left a comment in any of your video clip blogs, I am aware of your tireless effort to preserve those moments of our lives in the digital format and I want to thank you for it.
Thank you Anahid for giving me this idea of translating Ameneh song. If it wasn't for your translation of Bob Dylan's songs I probably would not have looked in this direction.

You should dance in the subject line & I won't peck again cause
by Anonymouse on Fri Nov 06, 2009 10:50 AM PSTYou should dance in the subject line & I won't peck again (in the subject line ;-) cause I'm afraid MPD may get upset and tanbihemoon koneh!
Now if others join the dance and peck, especially MPD himself or his creator, I'll peck again too! lol

Man goftam barat peck miam cuz you obviously weren't giving up so I thought if that's what it takes then so be it. Vagarna I ain't no Bandari expert. The hair thing is just a fluke. But since you have the 'reng' going I'm gonna join in. Boro berim.. Aah! Aah! Peck! Peck! Hair! Aah! Napkin! Aah! Shoulders! Shake!

by Anonymouse on Fri Nov 06, 2009 10:06 AM PSTYou said mikhay khodam barat peck biyam?! Usually people w/ expertise in Bandari get in front and start the dance. Loud noise volume?! You like low volume, so turn the volume down!
So, if you can move the hair and can peck biyay, you can do bandari a lot better than the rest of us. So let's do it!
Aah! Aah! Peck! Peck! Hair! Aah! Napkin! Aah! Shoulders! Shake!
Everything is sacred.
WTH Anonymouse???
by HollyUSA on Fri Nov 06, 2009 09:58 AM PSTWho died and left me as expert in Bandari dance? I'm actually not a big fan of Bandari music...noise level is too high for my delicate ears lol
But truth be told I can do Aghassi's hair thing. No clue why but I can! It is really has nothing to do with the head area, if you can move the muscles of your face a certain way, it sort of moves the hair line back and forth thus moving the scalp with it :P So that is my HONAR for the day.
So Abdullah Abdullah means servant of the servant?!
by Anonymouse on Fri Nov 06, 2009 09:43 AM PSTWe have a Persian saying that says; my servant had a servant and he had a servant too! Meaning no one wants to do anything anymore and everyone wants to just pass the buck!
Did you see any hair and peck movements in Bahram's latest video? Now having seen all these videos, can you dance like Aghassi and move your shoulders like that?! Not the hair and peck, we can't even do that ourselves but we all more or less know how to move our shoulders like that. It is called Bandari dance and it is very popular. Apparently HollyUSA is an expert in Bandari dances! LOL!
Everything is sacred.

by yolanda on Fri Nov 06, 2009 09:39 AM PSTHi! Mouse,
I found out the meaning of Abdullah, it means "Servant of Allah/God", yeah! Finally a non-Farsi speaker is right, :O)) Sorry for bragging, only once, I promise!

Thank you for mobilizing people to find the "aay naneh" video.
Hi Bahram,
Thank you for the aay naneh video! The pictures & music are so cute! Wow, you copyrighted the video! Your Hotel California video cracked me up 'cause the guy was sooo emotional. I got scared by his intensity!
thank you all!

Here is the aay naneh song lol.
DK jaan here's a request for you, please!
by Anonymouse on Fri Nov 06, 2009 06:33 AM PSTYolanda I don't know what Abdullah means, but the best person to ask would be Abdullah Abdullah, the Afghan candidate who lost! I just couldn't resist!
I can't look at youtube now but I'll ask our youtube i.com expert if he can find an aay naneh clip and post it here.
DK jaan this kisses your hand! While you're at it, would you also see if you can find a more longer version of Afghasi's hair, peck, napkin and clapping routines? The one's we posted here were very short. I think back in the days in the new year programs he'd display those talents more often. Maybe a Kaaf Show episode?
Aah! Aah! Aah! Biya baba! Left Peck! Right Peck! Aah! Aah!

by yolanda on Fri Nov 06, 2009 06:26 AM PSTHi! Mouse,
Thank you for your post. Thank you for telling us what "Nematollah" means in English, I knew that "-ollah" or "-allah" always has something to do with "God" like in Jundallah, Hezbollah, Yundollah, Nasrallah, or maybe Abdullah also?
Wow! the singer got a very pretty and religious first name. Thank you so much for the info. I think for Farsi speaking people, they probably know already, but for non-Farsi speakers like me, we are not quite sure...I only knew the meaning of the suffix "-ollah", not the entire word.
Thank you so much! It is fun to know the meaning of someone's name 'cause you will know the expectations of this person's parents.
Hi Mouse,
Could you please sing the "AAy Naneh" for us, make a video, and load it here. I am extremely interested in the alternative version of the guy's song! I promise you, I will watch it! :o))
Thanks,
2 more thing about Aghasi! His first name & lampooning this song
by Anonymouse on Fri Nov 06, 2009 05:03 AM PSTAghasi's first name Nematollah means bounty from god. Nemat = bounty and ollah = from Allah/God. Now who was looking for a boy's name recently?! Nemat or Nematollah sounds pretty good to me!
Later someone, don't remember who, made a funny version of this song and called it AAy Naneh! Meaning "ay aya ya mother"! AAy Naneh or Oh mother has almost the same pronounciation as Ameneh.
The song would say:
oh mother my wife beats me up!
she gives an ulcer
oh mother
oh mother
she has made my life a living hell
oh mother
oh mother
Sort of like Michael Jackson's "Beat it" and the lampooning song "Eat it"! Remember that one?! Michael approved the song too!
Everything is sacred.
Anahid you are right he brought his own unique style of clapping
by Anonymouse on Fri Nov 06, 2009 04:49 AM PSTI think he basically brought southern bandari music to the pop culture. I remember when Ameneh came out it was such a mega hit. They made so many "mixes" and versions of it and the first part which was 'slow' became even more popular once the song itself was a hit.
Some current singers, like Andy, Moin, Siavash and others still sing his songs with their own spin. He was and still is Z best!
Everything is sacred.

MPD, some of us are still awake
by Anahid Hojjati on Thu Nov 05, 2009 10:21 PM PSTThanks for your blog. By the way, I did not see anyone mentioning Aghasi's style of clapping which later became more popular. Being from South of Iran, I liked Aghasi. I was very young when "Ameneh" came out but still remember there was controversy about it because of the name.
