I understand the bitterness that exists between us and the supporters of GM. This is my attempt to explain our positions and goals to those who lost in the election or others. I will try to have an open mind and to respect the boundaries of a civil discussion. I am willing to change my position if proved wrong, but nevertheless, will give your arguement my full attention. However, certain principles should be respected in this thread if you wish to participate in this discussion.

1- Iran's integrity and sovereignty is not up for discussion.

2- Islam and religion should be respected in this discussion

Everything else is fair game. Lets start by a series of short answers and questions and see where that leads us.  Anyone can join the discussion at anytime whether pro or against.

Please be civil in your discussion.

SK jan,

My take on 'No Fear's" intention of using the word international was that he/she means about repelling wars by sending a tough image out whether on nuke issues or requesting a fair share of steak in Afghanistan and Iraq. And I agree with him/her to some extend.

But you brought up a good point, on the international stage Mosavi was also a much desirable choice.

This person suffers from the same symptom as Rush Limbaugh who thinks the answer to every international problem is force.

You are a *@&%#!! for supporting Ahmadinejad!

by Mola Nasredeen on

Now that's out of the way let me ask you if I may:

1. What's Ahmadinejad's strategy for winning the nuclear energy issue?

2. What are other positions inside Iran's cirlces of power?

What a joke!

"Furthermore, I despise the GM candidates and reformist for their lack
of economical policies and their inability to defend our interest on
the international stage".

Aren't Mosavi, Rafsanjani and Khatami leaders in economical and social reforms having much better credentials and longer resume than anybody else out there?

You might not agree with them but do not use the cover up word LACK!!!!

As you mentioned the opposition group has no say in Iranian affair. So Where do you live then? Abroad? I assume yes.

So why is that you are more inclined to choose a Iranian president based on his international performance? rather than his ability to handle the Iranian affairs internally?

Because you live outside of Iran and don't have to deal with problems on daily basis rather you want some one to look tough on the international stage.

Therefore you also have no say for the Iranians inside Iran.

Dear Sargord, Welcome aboard.

While the opposition outside of Iran is a non factor in Iran's political future, It is the green movement or the reformist that could provide the constant push to more social and political reforms as a counter balance to the conservatives in Iran. Furthermore, I despise the GM candidates and reformist for their lack of economical policies and their inability to defend our interest on the international stage. However, I respect their social agenda and i see them being effective internally for pushing social reforms. I have voted for reform once before, during khatami, never going to make that mistake again.

Who brought the charges against the current opposition leaders in Iran? Weren't the most charges against Abtahi, Atrianfar, Nbavi and the rest from the information ministry? Isn't the Information Min. part of the executive branch? What were the charges then? Bad mouthing the IRI? Thinking about velvet revolution?

Also, isn't it that peaceful gatherings are permitted by the Iranian constitution and the President is to guard the constitutional rights of the citizens? So why AH didn't issue a constitutional warning when the NAJA personnel (who are also part of the executive branch) were beating people on the street and destroying personal properties and killing innocents and incarcerating people with no warrant for a period of more than 24 hours?

Based on what standard, what sharia law, what Islamic teachings, what human right principles, and what common sense, we are allowed to imprison people simply because of what they thought or what they spoke of?

It is inexcusable to imprisom anyone based on their thought, simply put without over simplifying it. I have answered this question in detail. Please refer to earlier replies. Again, i am here to defend Ahmadinejad policies as head of our administration. I am not defending the head of our Judiciary, Ayatollah Larijani which your question should be directed to him. If you believe they are all the same and IR is to blame as a whole, then thats what i call over simplification of our politics.

I must say, No Fear, you've put on quite a courageous demonstration here.

I actually voted for Mousavi. That said, I accept the results and Ahmadinejad is the elected and legitimate president of Iran.

I can actually offer answers to question 5:

During Ahmadinejad's tenure as president, the US invaded Afghanistan, removing the Taliban, who had worked to greatly reduce the drug trade. Now, during the US occupation, Afghanistan's drug trade is at an all time high. As a result, despite its best efforts, Iran is awash in heroin. Hence, more drug addicts. Don't blame Ahmadinejad, blame the incompetent US led occupation next door to Iran.

There may be more criminal executions right now in Iran. That's actually consistent with most conservative politics around the world. Executions spiked in the United States during recent period of conservative state and federal administrations. So this shouldn't be considered unusual.

Low or declining records of human rights and freedom of speech are more relative, subjective issues. Which reports are you using? Knowing this would enable this issue to be more adequately addressed.

Why after AN’s promises to bring the money of oil into Iranians tables, the inflation is rampant?

The question is too general. what do you mean? Ofcourse when you inject money ( raise incomes, give handouts , etc) in the economy, you create inflation. There are other reasons for inflation too.

Even bread is 5 to 10 times more expensive than its price 4 years ago. In Abadan, Singhak is 1000 tumans now! - Why life has become so difficult for ordinary people, while Iran had a record of oil incomes last year?

If Sanghak price is 1000 tuman, then it should be sold that much. If its too expensive, people won't buy then the price will be adjusted. Do you mean we should subsidize it and lower its cost? a similar policy which the likes of Mousavi advocated during his term?

Subsidizing any commodity or services has distroyed that industry in Iran. You mentioned bread, before Ahmadinejad we imported over %80 of our wheat and flour from countries like Canada and US. The reason for the distruction of our wheat production was simple, when you continue to keep a product under subsidy, you keep the cost low by regulating the industry. This caused fewer and less profit for the wheat farmers. Many farmers in Iran decided that wheat was no longer profitable and switched to Kiwi farming. This caused us to become one of the world largest wheat importers, effectively paralizing this part of our agriculture. Listening to Mousavi blaming the government for the price of bread made my head spin. He was the first official who introduced subsidy in our economy and the later administrations followed his lead and kept those subsidies on a variety of products therefore effectively distroying that industry. Elimination of all those subsidies will make some suffer for a short time but it will save the industry on the long run which helps the needy in return by creating jobs in those industries.

Your questions 3-4 are too generalized. Question 5 will be replied in due time.

If the answer to any of the above questios is no, what penalty
are Iranians subject to for peacefully opposing the Islamic Republic ,
and how can Mr Ahmadinejad (and you)support such a system?

I always stated that i believe in change from within IR. I thought i answered this before. If the answer do not suffice, please rephrase it. Please read my replies.

You also conveniently ignore question 13- does AN support Khamenei's public declaration of war against the Iranian people ?

This is not a question, its a statement by you and its too generalized thats why i ignored it.

Classic copout and deflection of blame for Hamshahri.

What? How? care to elaborate? Simply put, are you saying the legitimacy of IR is under question, therefore it doesn't matter whether its Ahmadinejad or whoever? This thread was not about defending IR you know. It was about defending Ahmadinejads policies. You could continue your struggle for freedom for another 30 years if you wish so. But i never intended to defend IR in my thread. Its such a broad and general topic and it usually ends up like " you are either with us or against us " mentality. I clearly know where you stand and you know where i stand. So what now? You want another revolution? be my guest, go ahead.

Copout after copout after copout

by Fair on

Note how Human right watch is completely unaware that the person
responsible for the Kahrizak and other prison fiasco is the one
who Ayatollah Larijani is solely responsible for appointing. His name
is Saeed Mortazavi who oversees the detainees of the election riots.
Who is Ayatollah Ardeshir Larijani again? He is a member of the
Combatant Clergy Assosiation which other members include Hashemi
Rafsanjani and Mahdavi Kani.

Who says HRW is unaware of Mortazavi? The report actually mentions him, so stop lying. Furthermore, they are right to demand an investigation from the Head of the Judiciary, not his appointee.

Once again, comparing AN to other IRI figures and saying he is no worse is no defense. I am not a supporter of Rafsanjani, Mahdavi Kani, or any clergy association, so bringing this up by you is completely irrelevant and just another copout.

So the only thing you have settled here "once and for all" is your insincerity and lack of ability/willingness to address the real questions about AN and his coup.

ANd finally, the latest example of the barbarians you defend:

//latimesblogs.latimes.com/babylonbeyond/2009...

For the first time ever, A government has stolen the nobel peace prize from a Nobel laureate. That is right- government agents in Iran have illegally violated Shirin Ebadi's safe deposit box and taken away here Nobel prize.

Do you still have enough gall to come here and defend such barbarians? What does AN have to say about this outrageous violation?

Or does AN have nothing to do with this either?

How pathetic. Of both him and you.

Ask No Fear Anything- You will get a copout

by Fair on

Yes, I read your "responses" (read copouts) very carefully. No amount of reading your responses will change the reality that you're running away from the issues.

Just because the answers to 1-9 are all "NO" and you don't like it (and cannot even disprove it), doesn't make the questions irrelevant. Just uncomfortable for you and AN. Your only choice is the copout that you have done- wash your hands of it. Funny how it doesn't wash off.

That leaves us with question 10, which you conveniently ignore: If these fundamental rights are not respected in the system, then how can AN and you support it? To this one, you cannot even do a copout, so you just completely ignore it.

So No fear, you have indeed showed much fear about the central question above- and will stop at nothing to run away from it.

You also conveniently ignore question 13- does AN support Khamenei's public declaration of war against the Iranian people ?

I can repeat these 1 billion times, you will still have no answer and will weasel out of it by pointing fingers or ignoring it. You have no ground to stand on and are in opposition to your people's will.

The questions are very relevant indeed, and are asked everyday by millions of Iranians who risk their lives to ask them in the streets - what is irrelevant is your pathetic answers, and AN's characterization of those who ask these questions as "dirt and dust".

On June 12, 2009 AN was put in place through a fraudulent process, and in response we had the largest mass demonstration of people in Iranian history. At least Dozens were killed by AN's security forces, thousands of others were arrested illegally and held without charge, many of whom were tortured and raped and killed, many others whome are still held illegally and sentenced by mock courts. The man you support is now officially ruling on the basis of the blood of our people, and he is an oppressor of our people. He openly calls them "dirt and dust".

Neither he nor his pathetic supporters like you have any ground to stand on, and you know it. You have proven here how true this is by just ignoring the most important question and being insincere, and as Natalya said, wasting people's time and insulting their intelligence.

Your days are numbered, and his majesty's reign of rape and torture and oppression will come to an end. The only question now is how long will this enemy of Iran continue to ravage our country, waste its resources, and kill and rape and torture its people, and how long and how many misguided people like you will feel it is worth betraying and standing against your own people and supporting such criminals.

At least Mohammad Reza Pahlavi had the decency to acknowledge his own people's will when he saw how unpopular he was. AN and his supporters and sponsors have nowhere near such decency, yourself included.

In other words, it is you who don't get it.

Dear Fair,

Are you reading my replies before slapping me with more questions? I thought i explained the irrelevance of your questions in regards to Ahmadinejads administration. Once again, i prove it to you with links, hopefully you will get it this time.

Questions 1 until 9 has NOTHING to do with Ahmadinejad and its administration. These are islamic laws incorporated in our laws. The organ responsible for implementing it, is the JUDICIARY.The head of judiciary is Ayatollah Ardeshir Larijani , not Ahmadinejad. If these laws have to be changed, the judiciary has to send a bill to the parliament for it to become law. The head of our parliament is again, another Larijani who happens to be the other Larijani brother. The head of our parliament is not Ahmadinejad. Ahmadinejad has NO constitutional right to change these laws related to judiciary.

Here is a link of recent bills introduce to the parliament by the Judiciary. Check the topics provided in the link.

//www.dadiran.ir/tabid/70/Default.aspx

And here is a another link to settle this issue once for all.

//www.hrw.org/en/news/2009/08/28/iran-new-judiciary-chief-should-tackle-rights-abuses

Note how Human right watch is completely unaware that the person responsible for the Kahrizak and other prison fiasco is the one who Ayatollah Larijani is solely responsible for appointing. Try to be stupid and buy AN's cr@p - act 147

by Mardom Mazloom on

No Fear, I’ll not say Dear to a person who defends a monster for whom millions of Iranians are dirt and dust.

You’re just kidding yourself by trying to defend the AN-defensible. You are leaving the mountain of corruption, fascism, human rights violations, etc. under AN’s last four years presidency and sticking to the epsilon of what Baghi can now write that he couldn’t before! Even your quote of the epsilon is false. I’m not an IRI lover, but facts are facts. Do you know how many newspapers were published under Khatami? Do you know what journalists wrote at that time? Either you know it and want to pretend the opposite or you don’t. In the latter case, I expect that you’ve not been in Iran since longtime ago.

Beside Fair’s very Specific questions, here some other ones.

1- Why after AN’s promises to bring the money of oil into Iranians tables, the inflation is rampant?

2- Even bread is 5 to 10 times more expensive than its price 4 years ago. In Abadan, Singhak is 1000 tumans now! - Why life has become so difficult for ordinary people, while Iran had a record of oil incomes last year?

3- Under AN, there were more than 300 billions of dollars from oil incomes, where are these incomes?

4- Can the president of a country ignore all the misfortunes of the population he is supposed to govern?

5- Under AN, Iran has a high record of executions, addictions to drug and the lowest record of human rights and freedom of speech, how can you pretend to be Iranian and defend such a beast who caused all these cr@p? - If you say that it's not his fault, you can not deny that he promised to change things and now they are worse, so why has he sold cr@p to people?

6- Dare you say that these questions + Fair ones are irrelevant or no specific?

It is more in tune with the realities of those in Iran rather than Obama's nice quotes written for history.

Nice. The "realities" of those in Iran. The "reality" of those in Iran is that they will be tortured and raped for opposing Ahmadinejad. As far as Obama's quotes, they are right on, and they are on the right side of history, as are the Iranian people.

You, a self proclaimed supporter of AN, have a lot of nerve to bring up the name Baghi. He was jailed, abused, and hospitalized under AN's term as well as previous administration, and was prevented by AN government to receive many honors in human rights and journalism, the most recent of which is the MEA human rights award this year. His books are banned in Iran, and there have been sentences passed against his wife and daughter as well. He is free to write in newspapers?? How generous of you.

Just yesterday Karroubi's house was surrounded by armed Basijis calling for his death. Not to mention physical attacks on both Mousavi and Karroubi on many occasions by government agents, and attacks on their homes and offices and supporters.

Has AN spoken out unequivocally and forcefully against such actions? Can Karroubi and Mousavi freely express their opinions in newspapers? What steps has AN taken for these people's safety, as well as the rights of all those like Abtahi and others who have been put on trial and sentenced (5 of them to death) in mock court?

How long are you going to defend a criminal, and what types of idiots do you take the readers here to be?

Classic copout and deflection of blame for Hamshahri.

When did I EVER blame only one person AN for this closure? The whole system, whose president is AN, is to blame. You are the one who claim under AN there has been more freedom of press. Then SPECIFICALLY state what he has done to protect this freedom. Iran has dropped to 172 out of 175 in the world for press freedom under AN. Why does Hamshahri even get banned for a few hours, why does it even get warned, and why should Hamshahri apologize for anything? It is the Islamic Republic who should apologize to Hamshahri and the people of Iran for attacking the press.

Yes, the power structure in Iran is complicated, BY DESIGN, precisely so people like you can just deflect blame and point fingers at others at everybody else in a globally corrupt and oppressive system, saying "don't look at me, there are others". Everything is the fault of others, classic IR copout.

Leadership is about being responsible, not running away from responsibility and copping out.

I asked you 13 questions, 2 of which you answered with pathetic copouts, and the other 11 of which you just brushed off, ignored, despite saying "ask me anything". Per your request, and so you don't actually have to go back and put effort and find them, here they are :

1-Can an Iranian in Iran coming from a muslim background openly renounce their belief in Islam if they so choose?

2-Do Iranians have the right to read, think, watch, wear, eat, and drink what they want?

3-Is a woman guaranteed equal rights to a man in the Islamic Republic?

4-Do All Iranians have the right to peacefully express their opposition?

5-Do All Iranians have equal rights, regardless of their relgious beliefs or lack thereof, under the Islamic Republic?

6-Is it illegal to have political prisoners in Iran?

7-Is it illegal for prisoners be tortured and/or raped?

8-Do prisoners have the right to a defense lawyer and a public open trial in which they can defend themselves?

9-If the answer to the above questions is yes, what has Mr Ahmadinejad
done to guarantee these rights? What steps has he taken to free
political prisoners and guarantee any of those arrested access to
lawyers and open fair trial? Why has he not launched a full scale
investigations into violence, torture, rape, detention without trial
and representation against unarmed peaceful protestors?

10-If the answer to any of the above questios is no, what penalty
are Iranians subject to for peacefully opposing the Islamic Republic ,
and how can Mr Ahmadinejad (and you)support such a system?

13-After the June election and mass opposition protests, Mr.
Khamenei openly declared war on the people of Iran in the Friday
prayers, banning any protests, even peaceful ones. Does Mr. Ahmadinejad
defend this declaration?

Dear Mardom Mazloom,

While i appreciate your posting of Obama's quotes, You may wish to look in to some of human right advocates in Iran like Emaedin Baghi who has offered specific steps ( In oppose to a general idea ) on how to improve personal rights specifically dealing with courts in Iran. Below is a link that you might find interesting. This is what the human right advocates are trying to reach in Iran. It is more in tune with the realities of those in Iran rather than Obama's nice quotes written for history.

//www.armaniran.com/fa/pages/?cid=1144

The difference between this administration and previous ones is that people like Baghi have a voice now and are allowed to print their articles in newspapers. This might not be to the liking of the Judiciary or even the administration, but the important thing is that issues are allowed to be debated. This sort of freedom has not been available to Iranians neither during Mousavi, Hashemi rafsanjani nor Khatami era.

You said "Ask me anything". I guess that does not include difficult questions about foreign policy, jobs, human rights, the economy, and our standing in the world.

I have answered all questions based on my knowledge. If there is any questions left out, please rephrase and present.

In regards to Hamshahri paper, If it gets banned permanently, then you have a strong case about Ahmadinejad oppression of freedom of press ( this is based on your wrong assumption to begin with ). How do you explain if it doesn't get banned? Did Ahmadinejad let one of its strongest critics gets off the hook that easily?

Do you realize the flaws in your original arguement that Ahmadinejad is responsible for all the press closures and freedom of press? your arguement fails to explain why Hamshahri is not banned and why they refuse even an apology. Why hamshahri is still under publication?

Now, what if i tell you, like i said before, freedom of press is NOT entirely up to Ahmadinejad's administration? Am i whitewashing Ahmadinejad or am i stating facts? I underdstand perfectly why some want to blame this entirely on Ahmadinejad, but is it worth to distort the truth for it?

The committee which oversees the closure , ban or any other press court ruling consists of :

One representitive from the the Judiciary, One representitive from Ahmadinejad administration, One representitive from the parliament, One representitive from the Press ,One from ministry of Ershad and one from Ministry of higher Education (science).       Only two votes out of the 6 is considered votes aligned with Ahmadinejad's camp ( Under ideal circumstances, 3 ).

It is important to understand how these committees work with their political affiliations before pointing the fingers at one person. Iran's power structure is complex and even foreign diplomats have difficulties understanding it ,therefore, their media is usually incorrect when reporting or analyzing a developement in Iran politics. However, I do understand how easy it is to single one out and blame everything on him. Unfortunately, this time it is the one who is actually making a difference.
