A Writer in the Sky

Goli Taraghi at Village Voice in Paris

03-Mar-2010 (2 comments)
The evening of Thursday 25 February in Paris was wet and windy. From metro Mabillon I turned left and found myself in the rue Princesse and in front of Village Voice, the Anglo-American bookshop where Goli Taraghi, the Iranian novelist was going to give a talk. This well-known Parisian bookstore organizes lectures by many international writers. I got there over half an hour early. Next door I spotted an eating establishment with plenty of empty chairs. I went in and discovered that it was a fancy hamburger joint with Sri Lankan cooks sporting Saddam Hussein moustaches and French waiters dishing out pseudo-American burgers in pseudo-American accents>>>

Europe's Role

What Europe can do to secure a deal with Iran

01-Mar-2010 (26 comments)
Against the backdrop of the Iranian government's continuing crackdown on its critics, Western powers are preparing for a fourth round of multilateral sanctions and other measures in the hopes of persuading Tehran to alter course on its controversial uranium enrichment policy. But even with Russia now apparently on board, will more sanctions work? And is there a specifically European role to be played in such a strategy? There is convincing new evidence that the Islamic Republic has continued pursuing a secret nuclear weapons programme in defiance of the IAEA and UN Security Council resolutions>>>

Mousavi and Karroubi’s attempts at navigating the ship of reforms is arriving at a pivotal juncture

01-Mar-2010 (20 comments)
With relentless pressure from the right and deterioration of once powerful green movement, Mousavi and Karroubi have been forced to outline their strategy. Finding themselves in a tough position, both men have made it clear that reform is the path they endorse and regime change is not on the agenda of the green movement. This is a tricky balancing act as it forces the duo to reaffirm their alliance to Islamic revolution while trying to keep the coalition of green movement motivated and together>>>

The firefly

Omid joined the crowd.
A firefly followed
through the iron gate
and into the night.

He wondered aloud,
what he did by himself,
inside his head,
was it wrong or right?

27-Feb-2010 (4 comments)

The Prerequisites of Escalation

Mousavi's "five points" still carry much weight

27-Feb-2010 (11 comments)
In his 17th statement, Mir-Hossein Mousavi made five specific points that he deemed necessary to start the political (and national) reconciliation process. The proposal lead to a noticeable uptick in talk about the need for national "unity"in the weeks leading up to 22 Bahman, and also garnered much attention from Iranian intellectuals and dissidents alike. Were these five conditions to be met, the Green movement would arguably have the breathing room it needs to mobilize and begin the long process of transforming Iranian society. For if anything became apparent in the weeks leading up to and after the June election, it is that Iran has undergone an awakening>>>

Rooftops of Villanova

Literary award for "Rooftops of Tehran"

27-Feb-2010 (3 comments)
As a debut novelist, the selection of my book Rooftops of Tehran for Villanova University’s One Book program was an amazing honor. In its fifth year, earlier selections of this prestigious initiative have included Khaled Hossini’s The Kite Runner in 2005, followed in successive years by Timothy Tyson’s Blood Done Sign My Name, Immaculee Illibagiza’s Left to Tell, and Jeannette Walls’ The Glass Castle. I had no idea, prior to arriving at the campus, how much time and effort had gone into preparing for my visit. >>>

27-Feb-2010 (2 comments)
