A few years, before Zahra Noorbakhsh moved to the New York stage, her grandma didn’t want to shake hands with me. At the time, Zahra was an undergrad literature major at Berkeley and may have thought it was about time her conservative Muslim grandmother met her real-life friends. After so many years in the U.S., I had forgotten that when you greet a chadored Iranian woman of grandma’s generation, proper etiquette is to look down at your feet as you say your salaam. Then if it turns out she’s not ultra-conservative, she’ll let you know>>>

این روز‌ها نه تنها ایران در مخمصه نوعی مدیریت غیر انسانی و حکومت قرون وسطایی گیر افتاده و با نابسامانی و ناهنجاری دست به گریبان است، بلکه در سراسر کره خاکی نکاتی را می‌توان برشمرد که خوشبین‌ترین افراد را نیز به واکنش‌های یاس‌آلود سوق میدهد. واکنش‌های اعتراض‌آمیز ما پاسخی منطقی به بحرانی است که به عنوان شهروندان ایرانی با آن روبه‌رو هستیم. با این همه این روحیه اعتراض در سوی دیگر خود، جلوه‌های مثبت زندگی را نیز به رخ آدم‌ها می‌کشاند>>>

Irrelevant now, just a memory of past that now is what was and not what if. Nothing in time is cherished when present, because present is future goals. Past remains a powerful scent capturing a room of desired what if. This travel has an end unless past remains, where arriving to a destination reminds of times of when there was once>>>

Seeing Shahrokh Moshkinghalam on stage dressed up as Zohreh, the Goddess of Love, evokes an eerie sense mystery. We think of honeyed speech and gazelle like body movements as female, but the actor in Moshkinghalam knows better. He drapes the goddess’ glamour wear over his masculine flat chest and judiciously sidesteps trying to imitate a woman’s voice pitch. With reddish curls tumbling from his head down to his waist, he appears as a mesmerizing, and oddly beautiful, not-quite-human entity>>>

یکی از بزرگترین معضلات اجتماعی ما فعالیت بانوان در عرصه ی هنری است. به خصوص در زمینه هایی که بعد اجتماعی فراگیرتری دارد از جمله بازیگری و خوانندگی. بر خلاف عده ای از دوستان که معتقدند انقلاب باعث محدودیت بیشتر خانم ها در چنین عرصه هایی شده است من معتقدم قبل از آن چارچوب سنتی و تفکرات قرون وسطایی بعضی از مردان جامعه و در پاره ای از موارد زنان جامعه باعث این محدودیت ها شده بود>>>

By the time we got to the encore, the audience’s polite “let’s wait and see” clapping had turned into a heartfelt applause of delighted surprise. Stage time was short at San Francisco’s Yoshi’s Jazz Club and we weren’t sure if we were even going to get that encore. عکسی نشانم داد. عکس سیاه و سفید دخترکی چشم و مو سیاه که تولدش بود. پشت سر او پدرم ایستاده بود با یک زن. از این صحنه هیچ چیز یادم نمی آید جز حرف پدر که گفت این عکس توست و این زن هم مادر واقعی ات. هیچ یادم نمی آید چند ساله بودم ولی آنقدر عقل داشتم که بببینم آن دختر توی عکس من نیستم>>>
