* National Geographic to feature Caspian region

Since 1990, Reza [Deghati]'s assignments for NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC have spanned the globe, taking him from the Nile Delta to the legendary Silk Road and from Turkey to China's booming western frontier.

For his most recent project he traveled to the world's largest inland body of water-the 149,200-square-mile (386,398-square-kilometer) Caspian Sea in Central Asia. There, Reza investigated and documented the strategically located and economically valuable sea itself as well as its importance in the lives of people in the five countries along its shores.

You'll see how the collapse of the Soviet Union has resulted in the emergence of new countries and how the region struggles with the harmful effects of pollution. From Kazakh nomads to nuclear power plants and from the centuries-old caviar industry to a flourishing oil industry, you'll witness a remarkable contrast between old and new.

Step behind the camera with this superb photojournalist for a firsthand look at this pivotal region as it prepares to enter a new century. Reza's Caspian Sea assignment will be featured in the May 1999 NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC.
