در ایران، آخوند به معنای دانشمند، پیشوای مذهبی و معلم علوم شرعیه است، و گویند از عهدتیموریان در ایران رایج شده است ولی مأخذ و منشأ اشتقاق این کلمه به وضوح روشن نیست
