by Nadereh Afshari

G. Rahmanian,

Thank you for your expert analysis, enlightening comments, and studious answers to my questions. I learned a lot. And, farewell.

You have a tendency to twist things in a way to suit your own logic. In order to have an argument or debate one has to understand what others say, first. I wrote: "Am I dealing with yet another delusional Iranian ...?" in reference to your unprovoked outburst and insulting language and not your political views. One very common symptom among delusional individuals is paranoiac reactions to other people's verbal or non-verbal behaviors. Although I did read what you wrote in the form of a reaction to Ms. Afshari's article, I did not think much of it except that there is someone who is criticizing the article from a different angle. I simply could not figure out your political views based on one or two paragraphs. So, I could not label you delusional on that basis. Moreover, your logic that the reason neither "FR" nor Ms. Afshari reacted to my post was because they did not understand it is  fallacious for the simple reason that you have not confirmed your fact(s) with them. It seems you are trying to psychoanalyze others.I also found your line of questioning amusing. However, since, as you said we both want democracy for Iran, let's not waste each other's time. Wish you all the success in your fight against the tyrannical regime in Tehran. Good luck!

Dear Esfasnd ,Hedayat is also at the progenitor of surrealism

in Iran.

After almost four generations since Hedayat, and  with novels  such as  "Toba and the Meaning of Night," by Shahr Nosh Parsipor, and writers like Bahram Sadeghi, Javad Modjabi, Akbar Sardouzami, and our very own Cyrous Moradi (here on I.C.) ,- and these are only the few that I know of-, one could say Iranian surealism is alive and well, in no small way thanks to Sadegh Hedayat.

Here are my answers

by incognito on

Benross,

After. Even more, after the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan, and 2003 invasion of Iraq. In case you like to know, I was not endowed with prescience. Any other asinine question?

G. Rahmanian,

I agree that the current regime is antithetical to democracy. In my view, its reform or removal is but one necessary condition for democracy. However, neither is sufficient. And to our dismay, neither reform nor removal appears very probable any time soon. (If this makes me “delusional” in your eyes, be it.)

Where and how old were you when others “joined Khomeini's camp blindly and did not think for a moment what would happen to Iran”, if I may ask?

You write, “for me regime change must be the ultimate goal of Iranians who believe in democracy.” What steps are you taking now to achieve that goal?

You write, “I cringe at the thought that a person like Ahmadinejad is Iran's president and illiterate mullahs of all colors are ruling my country.” O.K. In addition to contributing to IC, what else are you going to do about it?

P.S. For Pete's sake, let’s not turn this blog into a group therapy.

Without the removal of the regime there is no other way Iranians can establish a democracy! That has been my position since the murderous mullahs came to power in Iran. I lost every respect for those who joined Khomeini's camp blindly and did not think for a moment what would happen to Iran. Again, for me regime change must be the ultimate goal of Iranians who believe in democracy.
I cringe at the thought that a person like Ahmadinejad is Iran's president and illiterate mullahs of all colors are ruling my country.

When do we realize that

When do we realize that “regime change” is at best a dubious sideshow in our nation’s struggle for modernity?

You came with this idea before Islamic revolution or after?

“zebh-e eslami” for outing an alleged plagiarist? Mrs. Rusta and “zebh-e eslami”? What a facetious diction! No wonder neither of them reacted.

Now, G. Rahmanian, this is not about you or me. As I understand now, we are very much on the same side of the divide. I reacted to Mrs. Afshari’s abuse of a pillar of Iranian intellectualism for preposterous political reasons. You reacted to her denigrating the Green Movement. I don’t see any conflict here.

As another commenter pointed out, she has earlier abused Mossadegh. Who will be her next victim, I wonder? Nima Yushij? Dehkhoda? Or, Amirkabir? How many of our national treasures will be sacrificed at the altar of her political agenda?

When do we realize that “regime change” is at best a dubious sideshow in our nation’s struggle for modernity?

1. You started the "name-calling" by calling me, "saadeh engaar" which translates into, "simple minded" and then tried to ridicule the things I have said on this site in a rude manner. 2. My comment was in reference to "FR's" who, in my opinion, was "exposing" Ms. Afshari's "plagiarism." I may have been wrong, but since neither "FR" nor Ms. Afshari reacted, there was no need for any explation. 3. You can read my reaction to Ms. Afshari's article right below your first comment on this thread. I strongly believe the movement that became known as the Green Movement worldwide was indeed pepple's movement which was not "hijacked" by anyone. The opposition, which is still discussing irrelevant history of a hundred year ago and is trying to educate Iranians with regards to the ins and outs of democracy while Iranians are suffocating under the yoke of IR, offered the movement to Mousavi et al. on a silver platter! You may disagree with my view, however, that does not give you the right to call me simple minded or make fun of my opinion. Otherwise, you should expect a fair share of getting raked over the coal. 4. The joke is one of the most didactic
pieces of information one can get on many aspects of democracy. To my friend it was funny because that's how some Italian-Australians deal with their issues. For me, as an Iranian who believes by establishing democracy in Iran, many of the current major and minor problems will disappear, it proves how little those who think Iranian are not ready for democracy know about what democracy really means. If those who came to Australia "handcuffed" can establish one of the great democracies of the world, then Iranians can also establish democracy in Iran. Have a good evening!

Where did you get the idea that I see myself ‘among the bigshots of the Iranian “opposition” with all the answers’?  Do you consider yourself, or for that matter, anybody else among the IC contributors and commenters, as a ‘big shot “opposition”’? I have a less delusionary description of who we are and what we are doing here: we are a group of folks that have nothing more important to do this Monday afternoon, than reading IC and engaging in chitchats with fellow readers. Is this too plain a description for your endeavour?

Do me a favor, rather than engaging in name-calling, or telling jokes, enlighten me by explaining what your "zebh-e eslami" was a reference to? Or even better, rather than wasting time on personal attacks, let’s concentrate on the content of this blog. Tell me what your reaction was after reading Afshari’s reference to the Green movement as “slime”. As I understand you once posted a poem in support of the Green Movement.

My comment was not related to yours, AT ALL. You got it all wrong for the simple reason that you see yourself among the big shots of the Iranian "opposition" with all the answers. This is the second or third time I see your name here on this site. Am I dealing with yet another delusional Iranian? As for democracy: In order to establish a democracy you don't need to make a political scientist out of every single Iranian man and woman. In rah ke to miravi be jaahaayeh digeh khatm misheh! Here's a joke an Italian-Australian friend once told me which can be very educational. Let me know if you have difficulty understanding it. A white Australian asked an Italian-Australian, "Why is it that you guys move your arms so frantically when you talk?" The Italian guy said, "We didn't come here in handcuffs."

I am sorry if I came across as harsh. I am not being harsh, we just have a difference of opinion on this. Although I agree with many of your comments, and agree that he was a product of his time, I still don't buy into this assumption that Hedayat had a romantic obsession with pre Islamic Iran and that it had influenced most of his work. He had a great interest in pre-Islamic Iran and wrote plays such as "Parvin Dokhtare Sasan" and "Maziar" as well as translating some old texts and publishing them with reviews such as "Zand Va Hooman Yasn" and "Neyrangestan". His other works are in no way influenced by his interest in old Iran. Ferdowsi also shows the same devotion to the pre Islamic Iran and I have not heard anyone blaming him. Hedayat was a very knowledgeable academic and a proponent of modernisation and his model for future Iran seems to have been a Western style society.

Dear Maziar,

Thanks for your generous comment. I am just being too vocal sometimes, nevertheless thanks for your generosity. I think by writing the life of Maziar, Hedayat in a realistic way reveals betrayals that Iranians did to themselves.

Dear Souri,

You are right. It's all about personal taste.

"socialist realism" is what I was thinking about...

by Roozbeh_Gilani on

Perhaps, but only in response to the blog. I did read about London's racial views, have not seen any evidence of that in his writings yet, but I wouldnt be surprised as many people of his era faced with modern scientific ideas of darvinism, socialism and Marxism came up with bizzare ideas on racial identity, etc some of which persist to this day. I actually think hedayat himself, perhaps,  believed in racial superiority of prsians over arabs, but wouldnt hold it against him.  I'll definitely read London's scarlet plague per your recommendation. Your critical comments are very much appreciated and respected as Divaneh and other learned friends on this site. I am an engineer, far from an expert in literature. I am just learning, occasionaly expressing a view. Absolutely no hard feeling.

BTW have not seen the farsi edition of "iron heel". Did it have the same cover as the english? picture of Allende with a jack boot on his head??

I thought I was being rather restraint and all ! Since I do consider you my virtual godson,I might reserve the right to be a bit hard on you at times, that's all.

But on a seroius level,  I think the issue two of us might have is more a matter of aesthetics, the role of arts and culture and how all of this helps in the struggle. I could be wrong but I think your ideas might emanate and originates with Tolstoy's "What is Art?" and the role he assign to arts: this narrative evolved into a certain type of "social realism" which itself easily degenrated into Zhodanovism and ...which is a whole another blog.

P.S. Jack London has a strong residue of white-superiority, and white-supremecy in him. I read practically all his writings in Farsi,  in Iran. You could imagine how it felt walking around with a covered copy of  "Pashneh Ahani" ! He was truly a viosionary wirter though with some limitations. If you get a chance checkout "The Scarlet Plague" ( Taon Sorkh) it's mazing.

P.S.S. Stienbeck's early phase is tremendous, later on because of his son's death he took positions against the peace movement.

And we still don't know Sadegh Hedayat, the first Iranian Surrealist: sounds like a new blog.

Divaneh jan, thank you as ever for your timely enlightening accentuations.

Hedayat is to Persian novels as Nima is to "new poetry".

by Esfand Aashena on

Hedayat's main contribution is bringing writing novels to Farsi and Iranians.

The author of this article has a habit of picking icons and then mis-representing them.  She did the same with her Mossadegh article and now it's Hedayat's turn.

Everything is sacred

Hoshang and Divaneh, I think you missed my point.

by Roozbeh_Gilani on

And being harsh on me and others who are critical of this blog rather than Hedayat himself!

We need to remeber that Hedayat was  the product of an era that if one was privilaged enough  to go abroad and study in "farang", he'd come back, write a book or start his own political party and so on. Now that there are 6 millions of us in "farang", by choice or not, Hundreds of thousands of us with PhD's so on, the equation is changed. Yes, I prefer steinback or London to Hedayat any day. Both bitter and critical of social economic conditions in their country yet expressed their views in masterpieces like "Grapes of wrath" or "Iron Heel". Hedayat's romantic  obsession with pre_islamic Iran-which influenced almost all his works- as a means of understanding the social ills of 20th century Iran is just wrong! Again, i am not criticizing hedayat, as I said he is a good writer and has his own place in Iran's litrature, as do samad Behrangi ! I am criticising a political system prevailing in our country for all 20th centrury and now into the 21st century which physically kills the best and brightest free thinkers of Iran so we are deprived of likes of Chekov or Tolstoy in our own country.

I completely agree with Red wines comment BTW!

Divaneh: On Suicide specefically, it is a sign of extreme weakness, be it hedayat or Hemingway. I belive Hedayat was killed by order of Islamists  if you believe Behrangi was drowned in Aras by Savak!

I have to be honest with you, other than "boof e koor" I just remember having read 3 other books from Hedayat. One is "toop Morvarid" which I have read just couple of years ago and I really liked it a lot. But Boofe koor was really dark and depressing. Exactly like Kafka's stories. But all this is about the personal taste. I like Hedayat, but I like many other writers, more than Hedayat.

Great article and great comments by friends such as Roozbeh

, Souri, Azadeh, and Divaneh. I have not read much Hedayat. Frankly, I don't know if it is my shortcoming or it also has to do with the fact that growing up, Hedayat's name brought to mind notions of suicide, negativity, etc.

Hedayat and I, in Paris.....

by Souri on

When I was young student in Paris, I was used to go see Hedayat in Pere-La Chaise cemetery every Sunday! I was too homesick (deprresed?) so going to Pere-Lachaise and talking to Hedayat about my experiences in a new land with strange people, was doing lots of good to me.

I read him many of my texts.....some of my poems....this was embarrassing for me when the passing folks were looking at me in a strange way .......but I liked to do it anyway!

Once even I got blocked in the cemetery at the down of a very depressing day of Autumns! All the doors were closed and I (and my friend) couldn't get out ! ......I said to myself that I will be dying tonight right beside his triangular gray tombstone ....but we have been rescued later in the evening. The doors got opened by the guardian of the cemetery and we got out .

I thought to myself, maybe that was Hedayat souls who helped me? LOL

Avoiding Cliche

by divaneh on

Dear Souri, This is not the first time that I hear that Sadegh Hedayat's works are dark or depressing. I don't know who came with that idea and why many people repeat that cliche. There is nothing dark or depressing about his work. On the contrary he is one of the best satirist that I have ever read from. Read "Meihan Parast", "Khar Dajal","Ghazieh Namak Turki","Mordekhorha","Zani ke mardash ra gom kard" and many of his other stories and reviews for some of the best examples of humour and satire in Persian literature.

I know you read Boof Koor twice at early ages and didn't like it. I have read it a few times and I find it mesmerising. To me it's like a cubism painting. I have not tried to read a political message in that story, although some such as this analysis have such conclusions. That is the beauty of this masterpiece that each person take something from it.

As Houshang explained Hedayat was a very busy writer and researcher and his contribution is hardly matched by any of his contemporaries. You blame him for not having proposed a solution to all our problem. I think he indirectly did and was part of that solution. Of course he did not have the arrogance of the one dimensional intellectuals who think they have the perfect panacea for everything. He just did what he had to do and pulled part of the heavy weight.

Houshang Tarreh-Gol, Divaneh, et al. - I am learning over here. Thanks much for your contributions about this Gem.

Okay then, I'd love to read .....

I want just your own perception. Your own belief and thoughts, not the links to other thinkers who were this and that. I want one "ordinary people" true perception and critic on Boof e koor. Are we able to do  this? Thanks.

PS_ Hooshang: At 13, I had read many other books from other wrtiers too, none of them made me depressed. I was a "habituée" ........

As a "discussion" on Hedayat this is really bizzare

by Hooshang Tarreh-Gol on

First he's compared to some "Iranina Marxist-Leninsts" who unlike Hedayat knew how to "prescribe", and not just write, and then when  Hedayat actually writes, he's really not  writing for the people! Did he write for Martians? Please name me another modern fiction writer before him that spent so much time on Iranian folklore and such?

Ms.Simin Daneshvar has some chilhood memories of "hanging out" with Hedayat in Shiraz, if I only could find and post them here, it is a very revealing account of Hedayat's disposition and sensitivities.

Then he's blamed for making a 13 year old depressed ( may I humbly suggest that, at that age it was probaly hormons palying ping-pong in you brain,  as the cause, as is the nature of such ages) and again compared  the to a phuking doktor who again alas could talk but can't "prescribe".

Shamlou has a poem about Taghi Arani, in which he says:

It  seems as if  we could use the same reminder for our Sadegh:

And above all of this, just read his letters to friends (published by Dr. Pakdaman, Cheshm Andaz) and you get a close personal view of what a giant (ghol) we're dealing with , cheers

I don't agree Divaneh

by Souri on

Although I like and respect Hedayat a lot, but I don't agree with you on all the points you have made. Of course many valid points have been stated in your comment, no doubt.

But we are not arguing about Hedayat having made a claim or not ! We are evaluating his influence over the majority of the people. Yes, as you said his great works have influenced part of the people, but that influence was negative, in my opinion. It brings dark thoughts and inability to change anything, to the mind of the readers. I was only 13 when I read boof-e-koor........I've got depressed.

Later on, when I was 18, I re-read it again.......this time I just felt pity for the weakness of a great writer like him. He was not ahead of his time, he was just very observant writer with a great ability of describing pains in a sour satirist way.

I like reading his splendid works, just to be familiarized with the pains of my people, my culture and my country, but he is not considered as my idol. As Roozbeh rightfully said, can we compare him with Tolstoy and Chekhov? (but Roozbeh forgot to mention Turgenev, the best of all :)

I like people who change a school of thoughts by describing its shortcomings, not the ones who only describe them, but fail to show any solution. It is like a doctor who tell you what disease you have, but have no prescription to remedy your disease. Something is missing.

Hedayat did a great deal, Roozbeh

by divaneh on

Dear Roozbeh, You seem to have a very clear cut opinion about the Hedayat and one wonders if that is based on having studied all his works or just some. Yes, there were many others who recognised the problem of this society which is deep religiosity, but not many of them wrote about it for the fear of Molas. We had Kasravi, Dashti, Iraj Mirza, Zakani, Razi, Khayam, Hafez, Ferdowsi and many others who tried to wake the sleeping nation up and in many cases paid for it dearly. We also had the silent intellectuals who stayed quite but Hedayat was not one of them.

You claim that he did not write for ordinary Iranians nor tried to influence them. How can you make that claim? Who has written a better story than Alavieh Khanom to expose the ugliness of the whole pilgrimage business? A story written in their own language. Which story has thought kindness to animals (which left Iran after Islam) more than Sag Wlegard. Isn't Daash Akol one of the most popular Iranian stories between the same folk? If the general public did not welcome some of his works it was because he made them uncomfortable. You have compared him to some good writers, but Hedayat was a genius that has his own place, and I as an Iranian can relate to him much more than London, Steinbeck or Chekov.

You and a few others have criticised him for having committed a suicide. I recently learnt of a theory in one of Jeesh Daram blogs or comments that he was killed by poisoning on the order of Ayatullah Behbahani (or another Amameh Koloft). I do not say that it is true but knowing the fate of Kasravi and others with such views, I can not disregard it unless someone in this thread provides some undeniable evidence that it was a suicide.

Now, let assume it was a suicide. Did he ever claim that he wanted to save the society, or did he just write about what interested him and sometimes pained him?

Despite what you have assumed he was one of the most influential writers of our time as evidenced by this blog. Many Iranians like me owe him a great deal for his stories and articles about Iranian culture and language.
