by Soosan Khanoom on Fri Mar 09, 2012 04:38 AM PSTI do not see any difference between these women and the ones who pose for Playboys. They are both using their bodies as a tool to send some messages through. Now you may think in the case of these women this is not sexuality. I. however. think IT IS. Otherwise they would have posed as a unisex and the only way to do that is to pose with your intellect not your boobs. No matter how hard some intellectuals try to see this as a natural event or try to portrait nudity as a progressive value in their war against backwards religions, to me it is the other side of the same coin. A coin that is a woman's body with two sides either totally covered or totally uncovered. And if you may think these particular poses by these women are not serving the same purpose as the ones in the playboy's magazine and if you are seeing these as nudity not sexuality then may I ask you why? Could it be because, here, these women are not picked based on their beauties? If so Could you please explain to me what exactly beauty is and where one can draw the lines?
Again thanks for your comments . I may not agree with some of the points you brought up here but I do value your thoughts and inputs and the great discussions that you have triggered.

by Disenchanted on Fri Mar 09, 2012 02:20 AM PST... to go around. Jason was busy catching mine so he forgot he had many himself! On the issue of spelling error my rule is this:
If one could correct my spelling, it means he/she knew what I meant and that's all I care. Isn't communication the goal after all?
Jason also had this other condescending comment: "that takes a whole different cultural upbringing that you lack ..."
To which I have to say: true, my upbringing didn't teach me to achieve my goals by "bringing" down my pants! :-) Sorry my bad!

For Soosan-Khanoom
by Azadeh Azad on Fri Mar 09, 2012 12:41 AM PSTI respond to your statements line by line:
*1. "Women have always been subjected to their sexuality."
The woman’s body does not equate sexuality. Sexuality is only a part of the human body’s capacity and function. If nude bodies of women (or men, for that matter) make you think immediately of sexuality, that is your problem of perception, which has its root in patriarchal thinking.
*2. "This desperate and extreme action that these women are taking is no more or less but equal to those women who wear burqa and neqab. All because of the way that the society of the time has been treating them. Extremism is Extremism."
The women who have posed nude for a calendar are showing to everyone that:
a. Women’s bodies are not source of vice.
b. There is no automatic connection between women’s nude bodies and sexuality, as the photos demonstrate.
c. Women’s bodies are natural and normal and there is nothing mysterious or provocative or dirty about them as Muslim Fundamentalists and many Iranian men think.
d. Women do not have to have beautiful bodies. Many women, like many men, do not have beautiful bodies and that is Ok.
e. Therefore, covering them up by force so that the narrow-minded men would not get excited has no basis in reality.
*3. "Now if anyone cheers these morons up then he or she should also cheer the other ones. After all it is the freedom of expression but there is no show off of the intellect in either one."
You are certainly missing the point. Plus you have this dualistic thinking, one of the characteristics of patriarchal thinking, about the body versus intellect.
These women are not trying to show off their bodies. That is *your* perception. There is an intellect and an idea behind taking these nude pictures. The idea that there is nothing depraved and immoral about women’s bodies. The only thing depraved and immoral in relation to women’s bodies is many men’s (and some women’s) projection of their perception of women’s bodies as depraved upon the latter.
*4. "No one cares anymore what is the degree we hold or ideology we have but rather how perfect or imperfect our butts and boobs are?"
The nude bodies of the calendar are not there to be assessed as perfect or imperfect. They are there to remind men, and some women, that women’s bodies come in different shapes, and that women’s bodies are NOT the problem. It is the masculinist perception of women’s bodies as subject of evaluation that is the problem.
*5. "When are we going to learn not to use our body as a tool that needs to be covered or, in this case uncovered, for our political gains?"
What is wrong to use our bodies as a tool for political gains? We use our tongues, our typing fingers and our brains (part of our bodies) to this end. N'est-ce pas?
And when are you going to learn, dear SK, that body and mind (or intellect) are not separated from each other, and that the intellect has no superiority over the body. Your statement is a typically patriarchal thinking. you need to do a research about the binary thinking.
*6. "Shame on us if we think by getting naked we are sending a strong message."
We need to stop thinking in terms of shame! These courageous women are sending the above mentioned messages, which I hope you appreciate after reading my response to you.
*7. "Thanks to these foolish acts men now look much more intellectual that us the women."
Who cares about appearances? Let's be deeper and more serious than that.
The majority of Iranian men, who are male chauvinists, are neither intellectual nor ever appear intellectual under any circumstance. Just read some of the backward comments by the Iranian men on this thread. Once again I insist that posing nude and being intellectual are quite compatible.
Cheers,
Azadeh

Real women ...Real bodies....Real issues
by jasonrobardas on Thu Mar 08, 2012 08:52 PM PSTThus far , all the comments from our brethren point to this conclusion:
The crime here is that a group of brave women have chosen to express themselves through nudity ,against all odds . They have broken the social taboo that the patriarchal society has so firmly enforced!
Women are supposed to be obedient , all covered up, all modest! What happened? We see the male commenters slandering these women as exhibitionist or slut . Obviously these guys are the product of our male dominated culture and have failed to disconnect from their puritanical upbringing that associates a naked woman with being loose and immoral.
There are also those who show disdain for such a courageous act and condemn it only because they do not find the women attractive! Well gentlemen ...let us face it all women do not look like "Jennifer Lopez" or the commercialized stars of Hollywood or the top models of the fashion world .
Women come in different forms and packages . Some slim and some heavy . Tall and short , young and old ! ....and yes, Some probably not so asthetically appealing as others . Yet, regardless of how they look, they are women. They have feelings , emotions and intellect! What unites them is their cause . Suffering from gender appartheid gives them a common goal. These women are well aware of their physical appearance and that itself is what makes their act even more revolutionary .
Not again !

by fanoos on Thu Mar 08, 2012 04:23 PM PSTThese women are part of the problem and not the solution. These women should take another approach to express themselves. by Anahid Hojjati on Thu Mar 08, 2012 02:52 PM PSTIt seemed to me that article by Ms. Majedi was based on some previous battles among two different political groups. In this article Ms. Majedi is trying to write that actions of Ms. Namazi has nothing to do with "Communism kargari". Ms. Majedi never explains why this is the case. Why can't a communist be pro tasking off clothes in order to register her protest against IRI restrictions on women clothing and another communist be against going nude as an ideal form of activism?
I think both are possible. Communism never dictated women clothing. Not that I believe in communism any more but I have read enough to know that it is quite possibe to be a communist and think that taking your clothes off is helpful to the movement. I am more on the side of Ms. Majedi but I wish she had made a better case.

by jasonrobardas on Thu Mar 08, 2012 01:31 PM PSTThis was the slogan of women in the western world against the right wing, conservative, Christian fanatics who have always been trying to controle women and their bodies ....those who percieve women as mere reproductive slaves .
The fact of the matter is women's struggle is neither just western ,nor eastern. It is universal.
In the eastern hemisphere , however , women have a much harder fight ahead of them . They have to fight the male dominated institutions that are run by men who are hundred times more fanatical, more narrow minded and more puritanical than their western counterparts! .
One can easily detect "backwardness" , "Chauvinism"and "misogyny" in our male compatriots when it comes to the subject of women. Check the reaction of the male Iranian commenters regarding the same issue in the previous article.
To some , a woman showing her body is obscene . Some have likened it to "urinating in pubic" . Some even went further slandering these women for breaking moral and ethical social norms.
Azar Majedi, I totally disagree with you . what these ladies did was not "Clowning " as you put it ....This is the reaction of a prtion of our population who is sick and tired of being told daily what to wear , what not to wear . This was an iconoclastic act ....it was a taboo breaker , a revolutionary act of defiance and yes we do need more and more taboos to be broken all . This was in solidarity with the rest of the women of the world ... women need solidarity ......Time to see that nudity is not obscene , mendacity and oppression is .
Let me end this by quoting Herbert Marcuse for all those Iranian males who made narrow minded, horrible , hateful comments about these ladies and saw their act as vulgar :
<< Obscenity>>
Obscene is not the picture of a woman who exposes her pubic hair .
Obscene is the picture of a fully clad general who proudly
displays the medals he has achieved in a war of aggression!
