The Fall of 2010

At year’s end, pundits are prone to partake in New Year’s predictions. It is a pursuit often done lightheartedly. But every so often facts align themselves in ways that require genuine assessment. And a willingness to make a prediction that may be so bold that it cannot later be hemmed or hawed or rationalized away. That gives a pundit an advantage over those other folks who prognosticate for a living at the CIA. They have so much intelligence at their fingertips and under their fedoras that they are very good at prophecies of geopolitical nuance – but not at sensing truly seismographic regime changes that may be at hand>>>

Leili and Kaveh

Last November some Iranian.com writers began a collaborative project to write an experimental story. The premise was that someone would write the first paragraph of a story and then the next writer had to add his or her part and so on until the last person who had to write the ending. Order of the writers was determined randomly, except for the first writer. We had a lot of fun working together, but when it was finished we had to hold on to the story for a while in view of the sad events in Iran. We would like to share the finished story with you at this time in the hopes that you might enjoy reading it as much as we did writing it>>>

حرامزاده

چشمهایش را به نرمی گشود و با نازی که ویژگی همه نازپروردگان بود از خواب بیدار شد. هنوز هوا تاریک بود. مطابق معمول برنامه روزانه اش پیش از هر کار به حمام رفت و دوش گرفت. آنگاه سجاده سبز رنگش را روی زمین پهن کرد، چادری سپید رنگ بر سر کرد و مشغول نماز خواندن شد. دعاهای رنگارنگ همیشه پایان نمازش را شکل می دادند. پس از نماز برخواست و سجاده و چادر را گوشه ای گذاشت و پنجره اتاقش را گشود>>>

Ex-Islamic Republic

Six months ago, Iranians went to the streets, chanting "Where is my vote?" This is how the Green Revolution started. The protesters now no longer merely seek democratic elections but want regime change. Their new slogans are: "Khamenei is a murderer and his rule is unjust," "Neither Gaza nor Lebanon, I only give my life for Iran," and "Independence, Freedom and an Iranian Republic." In other words, they demand a stop to Iran's support for terrorists in Palestine, Lebanon and Iraq; the separation of state and religion; and consider Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as public enemy No. 1>>>

سکوت و بی عملی

در اين وضعيت، بنظر من، برای انسان بودن و شدن راهی جز اين نيست که تک تک مان آمادگی خود برای شراکت در يک عمل سياسی دسته جمعی اعلام داشته و از پيله های انزوا و برج های عاج خيالی مان بيرون آئيم. مگر اينکه ما هم منتظر باشيم تا آمريکا يک «لوی جرگه» ی ايرانی برايمان راه بياندازد. براستی آيا تا اين حد سقوط کرده ايم؟ باور کنيم که به حکم عقل سليم نبايد جوان ستمديدهء خود را به دست متجاوزی ديگر بسپاريم>>>

روزی روزگاری

ندیده و نشناخته از غربت واهمه داشتیم. از اینکه نکند یهو بزند و همه چیز تغییر کند و هیچ چیز سرجای خودش نباشد. از اینکه صداها همان نباشد که هر روز میشنویم و یا ستاره ای در دل آسمان پس و پیش بشود و فردایش آفتاب آنقدر نماند تا بازی فوتبال توی زمین خاکی را تمام کنیم. از اینکه یک جایی پرت بشویم که کوچه ها را نشناسیم و هیچکس زبان ما را نفهمد. همه این واهمه ها از دل صحبت های بزرگترها بیرون زده بود و آنها بودند که کل و کاسه ما را بیخود و بی جهت بهم ریخته بودند. ما که سرمان به نصف روز مدرسه رفتن گرم بود و باقی اش هم بازی بود که تمامی نداشت>>>
