Advice to women in Arab world

17-Dec-2011 (2 comments)
The emergence of Islamic identity is just one of the potential threats to women's status in the wake of the Arab Spring according to Iranian-born Sussan Tahmasebi who is working to pass on the lessons learnt by the women's movement in her native Iran. The strengthening of Islam, division among secular and Islamic women and a widespread belief that the quest for women's rights should be put on hold until after the revolution all could pose a threat to women's status in countries like Egypt, Tunisia and Libya, says Tahmasebi>>>

Take Hostages, Wait for Cash

You want Iran to stop their Nuke program? Offer some cash!

17-Dec-2011 (2 comments)
Although we may hate to admit it, the pattern is nevertheless crystal clear. In 1979 when Iran took the US embassy staff hostage, it released them 333 days later after Ronald Reagan promised them cash, and several other promises he somewhat delivered and reneged on. The arms for hostages, and the Iran-Contra affair, are all there for you to review, of course Wikipedia has the details, but please, choose your own source, it's all perfectly visible>>>

NPT

17-Dec-2011 (9 comments)

17-Dec-2011 (2 comments)

Workers Unite! Against War!

There would be no room for campaigning for human rights when cities are bombed and civilians slaughtered

15-Dec-2011 (19 comments)
We, trade unionists in Tehran and other cities, extend our warm greetings to you from half way across the world. Please forgive us for not sending you a video message. Unfortunately trade unionism is considered a dangerous offense by the Iranian government and labor activists here are persecuted like dangerous criminals. Hence the need for extra caution even in a simple message of greeting such as this>>>

Album Review: "OUTCOME OF NEGOTIATIONS"

15-Dec-2011
With every new Kiosk album, I tear off the cellophane with a certain sense of excited trepidation. On the one hand, I can't wait to taste all the new cool ear-candy Arash Sobhani has picked out for me, from the candy shop of treats in his head. Arash Ali Wonka. On the other, there is a pragmatic fatalistic Iranian innate fear in me that always hovers just far enough out to like here- that at some point Sobhani is going to fizzle>>>

NOVEL

Children of a Lesser Nation

Ultimately, our future isn’t in the stars, but in our mind and hearts

15-Dec-2011
Cyrus’s throat is painfully dry as the deafening scream of the alarm clock wakes him up around half past five the following morning. In disbelief, he feels that his throat is about to crack open every time he swallows. Remembering a remedy prescribed by his mother, he gargles warm water with a pinch of salt before taking a shower. He hopes it may temporarily ease the painful dryness. By the time he washes down two slices of buttered toast with a cup of hot tea sweetened with honey, he senses his body temperature is rising>>>

Go All the Way: Nuke Iran

Possibility of military action has gained new momentum

13-Dec-2011 (86 comments)
Are there no more sane diplomats or politicians amongst us? On the eve of 2012, are we witnessing a lack of leadership and sanity on the part of the American policy makers? Even though Obama offered to negotiate, the IRI hardliners chose not to sit and continue with the talks. However, negotiation is not a one-day or one way process. It takes months to come to a compromise in order to avoid a catastrophe. The factionalism in Iran stops any attempts in its tracks>>>

13-Dec-2011 (4 comments)
Whatever policy the United States adopts toward Iran, it will need to communicate it to the Iranian people. This will not be easy. Iranians are subject to heavy anti-American propaganda from the Islamic government. Not only are there no diplomatic relations, Tehran even creates many problems for people-to-people exchanges like student scholarship programs. The main tool of U.S. public diplomacy toward Iran is generous government funding of Voice of America's Persian TV and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Persian program>>>

The New Dress

Review of Virginia Woolf's short story

13-Dec-2011 (2 comments)
The message that the narrator sends could be that while women’s clothing frequently substitutes for the limits put on women, it also suggests the possibility of change and opting for new identities. The essential issue for us is not to allow our clothing and its associated social pressures to control our psyche, as it happens to Mabel, but to be able to use clothing in order to actively transform the way we think of ourselves and the way we let others think about us>>>

13-Dec-2011 (one comment)
