Sasanian Chemical Warfare?

Regardless of whether there is any political meaning behind the news of the Persian use of chemical warfare and the current controversy regarding “weapons of mass destruction”, it is still interesting to see whether this new piece of research has any scientific value. For this, we turned to a colleague, Mr. Reza Yeganehshakib, who is a PhD student at the department of history, University of California, Irvine. Mr. Yeganehshakib comes to UCI with previous degrees in Chemical Engineering (BS) and Environmental Studies (MS). He has a strong understanding of the scientific processes that might have resulted in what has been reported in the news bit above. The following are his comments>>>

The Iranian Women Equality Calendar is an expanded English version of a Persian women calendar collected and organized by the efforts of Noushin Ahmadi Khorasani and published by Nashre Toseeh first in 1998. The publication of the “Women Calender” was banned and she was prosecuted in 2003. In a recent article written by Noushin Ahmadi Khorasani, she states that the calendar “provides a glimpse into the hidden history of Iranian women, a history that has not only remained unfamiliar throughout the world, but one that has yet to receive its due attention in Iran.” >>>

رویای خیس

بار اولی که رویای خیس داشتم، از ترس گیج شده بودم. شنیده بودم مردها رویای خیس دارند، جوانها بیشتر و پیرتر ها کمتر، اما هرگز نشنیده بودم زنها هم همینطور. البته اطلاعات من راجع به این موضوع یا هر موضوع مربوط به مسایل جنسی چیزی حول و حوش لطیفه و مزاح بود، چرا که من اصلا چیز زیادی راجع به این جور چیزها نشنیده بودم و نمی دانستم. فردای روزی که اینطور گنگ و وحشت زده از رویای خیسم برخاسته بودم، تمام روز در حال بدی بودم. مثل این بود که تمام روز تحریک بودم و نمی دانستم چه باید بکنم. لای پاهایم و در مرکز وجودم یک زلزله، یک آتش سوزی مهیب، یک خواهش غیر ممکن، تمام روز میسوزاندم و تکانم میداد و قدرت تفکر و زندگی روزمره را از من سلب کرده بود. >>>

The Doctor and the Sea

Zia Emami-Ahari is an Iranian-born retired orthopaedic surgeon. After retirement at the age of 63, he set out to realize a boyhood dream and test the resilience of mind and body of a person at his age. He undertook a mainly single-handed sailing journey on board Athesa a 31-foot sailing boat. The journey took him from Västerås in Sweden to the San Francisco Bay in the US. Following the termination of the journey, he continues sailing. He has in the meantime written a book about his adventures. In this book he describes his experiences while crossing the oceans alone, facing quite precarious situations and enduring harrowing feats>>>

The gift

My mom had already arranged everything. She had bought tickets for us both to fly from Shiraz to Tehran, she had arranged with my cousin and his wife so that we could stay at their place in Tehran, and she had made a preliminary appointment to visit Parviz Kalantari, one of Iran's most outstanding contemporary artists. We were supposed to be there "sometimes" in the afternoon of Sunday, December 28th. So Sunday noon time, after arriving to my cousin's place the first thing she did was to call Ostad (or Master in Persian) Kalantari and nail down the appointment for 15.30. پدر فلسفه‌ی آزاد

فلسفه در ایران با جمالی از خواب عمیق چندین سد ساله برمی‌خیزد و از پیله‌ی سخت پرسش‌های مزمن سر برون می‌آورد. در فلسفه پرسش‌ها همواره برتر از پاسخ‌هایند. هر پرسش پیش‌پا افتاده‌ای پاسخی متناسب با ارزش‌های حاکم بر جامعه دارد. اما هیچ پرسشی برای یک فیلسوف بی‌ارزش نیست. چه نخستین چیزی که یک فیلسوف را از دیگر اندیشمندان جامعه‌اش متمایز می‌سازد، نادیده‌گرفتن ارزش‌های حاکم از سوی او و تلاش برای جایگزینی آنها با کشف و یا آفرینش و برتر شمردن ارزش‌های نوین است. محفوظات فلسفی کسی را فیلسوف نمی‌کند، گرچه آنها لازمه‌ی کار فیلسوف‌اند؛ و نه حتا این و یا آن اندیشه‌ی فلسفی که هر از گاه از انسان تراوش می‌کند. فیلسوف پژوهشگری بی‌امان است که با پرسش‌های خود در زمینه‌ی چگونه‌اندیشی و چگونه‌زیستی به کشفیات و از همین راه نیز به آفرینشی نوین دست می‌زند.>>>

دلم برای معشوقم تنگ شده. برای چشمهای خوشگل و لبخندش که وقتی لبهایش را می کشید، دو تا چال قشنگ بغل دستشان حفر می کرد که من می خواستم به درون آنها شیرجه بزنم و همانجا بمانم. برای دستهای قوی و مردانه اش که هم ناز کردن بلد بودند و هم لذت آفریدن. دلم برای عشقبازی های طولانی و بی عجله مان تنگ شده. دلم برای بوسه های عمیق و هوسناکش پر می کشد. تا با او آشنا نشده بودم، نمیدانستم عشقبازی یعنی چه. میدانستم اما نمیدانستم مرد ها هم می توانند بدانند. فکر می کردم مردها فقط دنبال آمدن آبشان هستند و بس. البته زن ها هم همینطور! اما زنها می توانند چاخانی تظاهر به آمدن آبشان بکنند، اما مرد ها نه. فکر می کردم هماغوشی برای یک مرد فقط طی طریق برای آمدن آبش است، با عجله و بدون نگرانی برای همخوابش. وقتی با او آشنا شدم تازه فهمیدم هماغوشی یعنی چه .>>>

Stockholm's summer

More than one city in Europe fancies itself being Venice of the North. About two decades ago, I was in Belgium’s Bruges, a famous contender. It was charming, but in the fog of November, not exactly Venice. Stockholm, under the magical Northern light of the sun in the summer of 2008, gave pleasure comparable to Venice. Perhaps even more, because the waters that surround the 14 islands which make up Stockholm were immaculately clean. There was also music in the air, and magnificent architecture to tell an intriguing history. You took ferries for public transportation.
