I was in New York for a reason. I had to meet with a lawyer and I had to speak at a conference. The Market Research Association Conference. Usually I don’t dig the conference circuit. But this year I will have spoken at 4 events. More than I have done in the last 4 years combined. The subject of my talk was an expose of international ethnographic research. Spilling the beans on all of the cock ups, mess ups and screwy clients I had experienced over the years. A side note: I had called V to say I look ‘hot’ walking up 46th Street to the conference Hotel (the Marriott). She had asked if I looked hot and sweaty. I think she is so familiar with my look she has lost all sense of how good looking I have now become.>>>

Kader Abdolah, or Seyed Hossein Sadjadi Ghaemmaghami Farahani as his real name is, writes Dutch novels since 1993. He arrived in The Netherlands in 1988 as a political refugee and bravely started a career as a novelist. His column “Mirza” in the Dutch daily newspaper “De Volkskrant” shows the way he perceives social developments in The Netherlands through the eyes of an immigrant, an Iranian and sometimes a(n)(ex-)Muslim.... His “The Quran and the Messenger” is a simplified version of the Quran combined with the story of the prophet’s life, in a twin series. Mohammad becomes an actual person in this book, which makes it very different from all other writings by Muslims in which the prophet is portrayed as an infallible being.>>>

«حق خاموشي» بر اين اصل بنيادي عدالت استوار است كه شخص متهم تا هنگامي كه پس از محاكمه «به دور از هر گونه، شك منطقي» جرم او ثابت نشده، بايد بي گناه شمرده شود. وجود اين اصل باعث مي گردد كه دادستان در جستجوي شواهد عيني بر آيد تا اين كه بتواند ميان جرم و متهم رابطه اي پيدا كرده و موفق به ارائه يك ادعا نامه ي استوار گردد. بدين ترتيب حق خاموشي تضمين مي كند كه وظيفه اثبات جرم كاملا بر دوش دادستان افتاده و مانع آن مي شود كه او با مكر يا ارعاب و شكنجه متهم را به اعتراف وا دارد يا زمينه را به نحوي بچيند كه متهم گيج شده و با حرفهاي متناقض ناخواسته خود را در معرض اتهام قرار دهد. اين اصل همچنين موجب آن مي شود كه پليس به دنبال شواهد محكم و قرائن عيني براي اثبات جرم بگردد و در صدد تهديد متهم براي اعتراف و اتهام به خود برنيايد.>>>

دیروز، در میدان "درکه"، جلوی یک دکه ی شاه توت فروشی ایستاده بودم که کسی به اسم صدایم کرد. وقتی دنبال صاحب صدا می گشتم، مردی از پشت فرمان یک پژو پرسید؛ شما آقای احمدی نیستید؟ همان طور که خم شده بودم تا بگویم چرا، انگار عکسی از سال های دور، که چین و چروک زمان رویش نشسته باشد. در را خانمی شیک و تر و تمیز باز می کند و پیش از آن که سلام کنم، سایه ی محمود را پشت سر زن می بینم. بعداز ماچ و بغل، می نشسینیم به چای و صحبت. زن می گوید؛ بسیار از شما شنیده بودم. دیشب محمود گفت شما را بعد از سال ها، به یک نگاه شناخته! می گویم؛ این که چیزی نیست، خانم. این شازده مسائل پیچیده ی حساب و هندسه را هم با یک نگاه حل می کرد.>>>

I was shocked when I read that George Bush advised the graduates at a college the other day to "act responsibly" in their adult life. He told of his dream for a "culture of responsibility" to spread in America so people stay away from too much drinking, sex, and drugs. This immediately reminded me of that proverbial Iranian story about an elementary school teacher who had trouble pronouncing some sounds. When he tried to teach the first letter of the alphabet, his students heard "anef" instead of the correct version, "alef." Naturally, they mispronounced, too. So he got impatient and yelled "when I say anef, don't say anef, say anef" not realizing that the kids were copying him faithfully>>>

۱۲۷ گروهی است متشکل از یک سری هنرمند خوش سلیقه که چند وقتی است کارهایشان را این ور و آن ور می شنویم، ولی به اعتقاد من کارهای قبلی ایشان پرسه زدن در وادی های مختلف موسیقی بود در جهت اندوختن تجربه و پخته شدن و اشباع شدن از ایده های نو و «همه اش دود بود، خبری نبود از کباب» ! پس از مدتی تجربه کردن امکانات مختلف موسیقی، این دوستان به یک ساختار موفق و نوآورانه رسیدند و بالاخره جواب دادند که «من کی ام». آلبوم خال پانک به اعتقاد من تمام شاخصه های یک کار نوآورانه را دارد، کاری که در عین داشتن پیچیدگی های یک اثر هنری، آنقدر ساده و قابل هضم است که به محض شنیدن آن آدم احساس می کند که با این آهنگ خاطره دارد.>>>

It was pretty natural for me to start drawing on my Persian heritage in the composition of my music. All artists establish a palette and a vocabulary for their work that is based on what they've heard and seen through their lives. I was born in NYC and grew up all around the East Coast with Iranian parents, so I heard Persian music, Persian poetry, alongside American music and poetry. It's been a pretty natural for me to draw on both cultures in my work. It feels more authentic to blend the two than to exclude one or the other in my work. >>>

هرچند ما ایرانی ها امروز در همین لس آنجلس ترجیح میدهیم با بچه هایمان به زبان انگلیسی صحبت کنیم اما انگلیسی ها و فرانسوی ها و همین پرتغالی ها از صدها سال پیش تر به اهمیت حفظ زبان برای بقای فرهنگ پی برده اند. آنها طی قرون گذشته پیش از هر چیز دیگر ، زبان پرتغالی را در کشورهای تحت استعمار خود رواج داده اند. همین امروز بعد از سالهای طولانی که از استقلال "هند" می گذرد – زبان انگلیسی – هنوز هم زبان اول این کشور محسوب می شود. در الجزیره و بیروت و حتی ویتنام زبان فرانسه زبان رایج و معمول مردم است و در آنگولا از کشورهای قاره آفریقا – زبان اصلی مردم پرتغالی است!

How far beyond the flesh can you go?
How are your taste buds trained? By Coca-Cola, chewing gum and cereal? Or by bourbon, tobacco and the taste of a woman?
How does your breath smell like? Fire or a none-smelling fart?
How soft are your lips? Soft as an angel’s feather or coarse as used sandpaper on wood?
Are you repulsed by sagging breasts and do not see the beauty of a bosom?
Are you turned off by wrinkles around her eyes and miss the sparkle in those eyes? >>>

IDENTITY

One challenge I have faced, and I’m sure many others have as well, is my Name. After living for almost 22 years outside Iran, still saying my name and introducing myself to foreign audience is a challenge for me. Well, to be honest, it’s more than challenging, I’m actually fed up with my name. And to us, Iranians, I haven’t even got a very difficult name, but I’m still not comfortable with it. OK, by now you of course wonder what the hell is this guy’s name?? Well, my name is Homayun Mohasel Zadeh, as it is in my passport. So, let’s analyze this name first among Iranian names. >>>

سمينار جبههء ملی شاخهء آمريکا، که بمنظور تسهيل همفکری های اهل انديشهء سياسی در مورد «همبستگی نيروهای ملی و دموکراسی خواه» برگزار شد، اگرچه در سطح خود سمينار بجائی نرسيد و داد و ستدی انديشه برانگيز را در بر نداشت اما می بينم که امواجی را در مرداب سياسی کنونی ما آفريده و مطالب مطرح شده در آن، يا پيرامون آن، فضای تازه ای از گفتگوهای گاه دوستانه و گاه پرخاشنده را فراهم ساخته است. بنظر من، هر دو نوع اين واکنش ها مفيدند چرا که واقعيت رنگارنگ را آنگونه که در ذهن آدميان انديشنده دربارهء اوضاع کشورمان وجود دارد رو آورده و مطرح می کنند.>>>

الکساندر نه ربطی به اسکندر مقدونیه دارد و نه شبیه ریچارد برتون است. او هیچ ارتباطی به "اسکندرنامه" هم ندارد. الکساندر خوشگل نیست ولی جوان است و برومند و خیلی خوش مشرب و خوش تعریف. الکساندر همیشه در حال گفتگو با کسی است و همیشه موضوعی مناسب برای گفتگو پیدا می کند. من و الکساندر با هم فقط سلام و علیک داریم و هیچ چیز از هم نمی دانیم. ما حتا اسم یکدیگر را هم نمی دانیم. اولین باری که با هم سر کار حرف می زنیم و اسمم را می پرسد به شکل حیرت آوری متوجه می شوم که بلد است نامم را تلفظ کند؛ و "ه" را از توی اسمم حذف نکند. تعجبم را بیان می کنم: "فرانسوی ها بلد نیستند اسمم را تلفظ کنند، تو چطوری توانستی؟" >>>

When I was student some years ago, I was living in Des Moines city in Iowa State of America. During the noon hour I sometimes used to drive into the city and eat at McDonalds. The routine was usually the same, except for that day that I remembered was Tuesday. I ordered the same thing as always: a Big Mac, large fries, and a small coke. I proceeded to find a seat. The moment I sat down, I realized that I had to fight through the large crowd of hungry people; I hurried up to get my ketchup. After about four minutes, I returned to my seat. When I returned to my seat I was stunned. In the seat that I had previously been sitting in, there was an elderly lady eating my lunch>>>
