Assassins of the Turquoise Palace

Excerpt from upcoming book

15-Jul-2011 (one comment)
After two rounds—twenty-six bullets—the barrage ceased. The air was thick with the smell of gunpowder. Of the eight guests, everyone had stooped or fallen, except one. The eldest guest was still in his chair, head slumped, blood tinting his white shirt, blending with the busy pattern of his tie. Another victim was doubled over, breathing noisily, gasping for air. His face was smashed into a mug of beer. The golden liquid was slowly darkening>>>

U.S. Congressional leaders voice support for MEK violence

13-Jul-2011 (154 comments)
Congressional supporters of the drive to remove the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) from the U.S. terrorism list defended the organization’s use of violence while dismissing Iran’s nonviolent Green Movement at a hearing on Capitol Hill last week. The hearing was also remarkable in that senior leaders of the designated foreign terrorist organization were caught counseling some of the witnesses before the hearing. It is illegal to coordinate with a foreign terrorist organization to advocate on behalf of the terrorist group>>>

Mullahs are clawing back gains Iranian women have achieved

13-Jul-2011 (7 comments)
Another gender war is brewing and, fascinatingly, firebrand President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad emerges as the voice of liberal dissent! President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said plans to segregate male and female students at Iranian universities must be halted, drawing another battle line in his ongoing tussle with traditionalist rivals. Even a diehard zealot like the President has realised that any prudent person would be unable to work within the limitations of the Iranian clergy subjugated constitution>>>

13-Jul-2011 (one comment)

We will be unstoppable

Pausing to remember three events with anniversaries in this month

11-Jul-2011 (9 comments)
I was there. It happened. The student protests of 1999 started with the closing of a reformist newspaper, grew into more than 50,000 young people coming out into the streets of Tehran, and countless others who protested in cities all over the country. The protests ended with the imprisonment of thousands of those of us who participated. Back then, we were for the first time vocal in our questioning of our government. Before 18 Tir, people in our country wouldn’t dare come out in protest with slogans like “down with the dictator” or “down with Khameini.”>>>

It's hard to make light of the plight of my people, the Bahais

11-Jul-2011 (12 comments)
Back in the mid-90s in my show I'm A Short Fat Kebab Shop Owner's Son, I touched on cultural clashes that shaped my personality as an Iranian immigrant in Britain. Authenticity is paramount for a comedian, and as I prepare to tour a new standup show I'm getting braver: this time, I will be exploring what it is like to be an Iranian born into a Bahai family. The plight of the Bahai community in Iran has served as a backdrop to my life growing up in London, particularly since the Islamic revolution in 1979>>>

Why Did Iran Say "NO"

... to U.N. Special Rapporteur on human rights?

09-Jul-2011 (one comment)
Despite all political and moral pressure Iran faces worldwide, it has designed its narrative in such a way that it calls every UN resolution an American one, and instead of responding to the cases of human rights violations in Iran, it attacks Washington directly and offers instances of human rights violations in the U.S. It's not surprising that attacking the U.S. on human rights appeals to some countries, particularly those that, next to Iran, bear a similar international pressure>>>

Ahmadinejad & the Crisis of Iran’s Conservative Elite

01-Jul-2011
Although factional rivalries have long plagued Iranian politics, the current conflict is threatening the stability of the Islamic Republic at a critical juncture. With mounting challenges both at home and abroad, the government can ill afford to let political infighting spiral further out of control. However, insofar as the conflict represents a clash between two fundamentally conflicting outlooks on Iran’s future, it is unlikely that the crisis will be resolved any time soon>>>

Rajavi carrying U.S. down path of war yet again

01-Jul-2011 (413 comments)
In the 10 years that I have lived in Washington, I have never seen lobbyists for al-Qaeda parade through the halls of Congress. I have not seen any events on Capitol Hill organized by Hamas. And I have not seen any American politicians take campaign contributions from the Islamic Jihad. But the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK), an organization with the blood of Americans and Iranians alike on its hands, freely does all of these things, despite being a designated foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. government>>>

29-Jun-2011 (7 comments)
