Democracy by Other Means

The fact that the US did not attack Iran militarily does not change the equation

01-Apr-2011 (17 comments)
The President of Carnegie Corporation, Vartan Gregorian (an Iranian-American), suggested in 2009 that President Obama should send a letter of friendship to Tehran. About the American response to the 1979–1980 hostage crisis he proposed that President Obama should write that “[n]o country, certainly no country in possession of the vast power of the United States, would have failed to act under such circumstances. But we restrained our response, because the powerful have the option not to exercise their power…out of a sense of responsibility.” >>>

A play “just” about love

Sepideh Khosrowjah’s new play, "It’s Not About Pomegranates"

01-Apr-2011 (one comment)
Khosrowjah has recreated that seminal debate in her play about a play, and like Sean and Atoosa, each of us will come away with a different judgment about the characters. Some would say she slept with him to get her play produced. A favor for a favor. Others, like me, would see two people looking for an excuse to fall in love. Still others may favor their attention on the intellectual dialogs about how East and West typecast each other>>>

The Reawakening

Middle East's religious and cultural reformation

30-Mar-2011 (9 comments)
The current grassroots uprising against the theocratic scrooges or autocratic puppets and their hegemonic linchpins, spanning from North and the horn of Africa, to Southeast Asia supports such a re-awakening paradigm. The fundamentalist crypto-theocracy has also remained an impending predicament in several countries against the organic aspirations of the masses yearning to establish the rule of law, security and sovereignty, modernity, justice and equality, transparency, equality, and peace>>>

28-Mar-2011 (16 comments)

ACTION

Monitoring a Human Crisis

Iranians can take comfort that the international community is finally answering their call

25-Mar-2011 (21 comments)
Thanks to its active presence on the United Nations Human Rights Council, the Obama administration was able to work with Sweden and a broad coalition of cross-regional partners to ensure the Council took action on Iran. This groundwork paid off today as the HRC voted to establish an independent human rights monitor on Iran to address the ongoing human rights crisis. The need for a monitor is clear. Iran’s dismal human rights record has only been getting worse, with the Iranian government going on an “execution binge” and severe penalties for political dissent that have even landed 28 journalists and 9 bloggers in prison>>>

SHAHYAD

A Monument of Many Faces

Waiting for her people to return to her

25-Mar-2011 (4 comments)
Shahyad stands tall, proud and clad in white, as if she were the Bride of Iran. When conceptualized, she was to represent the grandeur of Iranian civilization and also provide a gateway welcoming visitors into the capital. Iranians, known for their obsessive hospitality, created an “arch of triumph,” or taq-e nosrat, located adjacent to the airport to greet every visitor. Like many historic Iranian monuments, the expansive grounds surrounding the tower were intended as a venue for celebrations, parades and other cultural events and activities>>>

THINKING OF YOU

Dear Freedom

Express your love and appreciation

18-Mar-2011 (one comment)
Traditional Nowruz celebrations include the preparation of a Haft Sin table which literally means the seven s’s. Seven items beginning with the Persian letter sin (equivalent to the English s) and which represent spring time are set out. To honor this tradition, this year Amnesty International has selected seven cases, all of them prisoners of conscience who have been identified by Amnesty International as “individuals at risk” and are therefore targeted for intensified campaigning>>>

NEW YEAR

Norooz Pirooz

The Persian New Year will find its way to my home and into my heart

18-Mar-2011
I try to look at the positive side. The error in that puzzle seems to have been the kick I needed in my guts. It has told me that even if the world is not celebrating, it’s up to me to make a small haft seen, light Norooz candles, and pray for mankind. After all, this ancient feast is all that’s left of my Iranian-ness, it will forever define my identity and is the legacy I shall leave to my children. I can’t allow anger or sorrow to mar the optimism of vernal equinox>>>

QUESTIONS

Bushehr? Earthquake? Disaster?

Japan tsunami and Iran’s quest for nuclear energy

16-Mar-2011 (41 comments)
It is time for Iran too to revisit its nuclear ambitions. Unlike Japan, Iran is immune to devastating tsunamis, as Iran possesses no oceanfront. But like Japan, Iran has proven to be an earthquake prone country. An earthquake of a similar magnitude as experienced near the cost of Japan can potentially threaten Iran’s nuclear reactors. Furthermore, Iran’s oil and gas and other industrial sectors have historically suffered from under-investment, grave negligence, and lack of overhaul. If anything, this history raises concerns about the safety of the Iranian nuclear reactors in the long run>>>

16-Mar-2011 (4 comments)

NoRooz NEVER cowbug

If we can't stand up for NoRooz, then what do we stand for?

16-Mar-2011 (13 comments)
Once again, my personal NoRooz tradition and mission of bashing the inherently wrong and unduly horrendous English spelling of nowruz begins like Spring herself, anew. Once again, I carefully prepare to gird my loins as the necessary backlash arrives from those haplessly less versed than I in Anglicus Lactosa, and hopelessly trapped in Encyclopaedia Iranica, and we begin our endless dance once again>>>
