Siege Mentality

Complex stage of rule and protest, dissent and apathy

07-Dec-2010 (26 comments)
Yet even a paranoid can have real enemies - and delights in conjuring more from its delusions. Three decades of sanctions and suspicion from the west have nurtured revolutionary Iran’s sense of siege. The regime uses every particle of hostility to blame any domestic problem or upheaval on foreign powers, the United States and Britain above all. It is skilled too in sustaining the alarmist message that internal enemies are in the pay of or serving the interests of these nefarious outsiders>>>

How many of you celebrated Chanukah?

Every year around this time I think of Mrs. Lovi

07-Dec-2010
Living in Highland Park, Illinois for over twenty years, and mingling among its 90% Jewish population, I should have known better than to expect my second grader to be happy with one night of Christmas. But since Christmas and Chanukah often came around the same time, none of us had paid attention. Then came a year such as this, when the two events were weeks apart and on a Monday, when I picked up my son from school, I noticed a new gloom in his attitude>>>

A Genius of Happiness

To name it felt like we were putting ourselves above it

07-Dec-2010
It was ridiculous. That was the only way to think about it. Or absurd. It was best to move carefully around it. The only way we could make sense of that love was to treat it like something very fragile. We found our home among the most fragile places in the world. That was where we saw how strong it was, because their fragility would not be anything new. I already know what that is, we would think. I already know what that kindheartedness is, we would think when we saw the Vietnamese janitor at my sister's school who liked seeing us whenever I went to walk her home>>>

WIKILEAKS

Neither wrong nor illegal

Our instrument of last resort for bringing some accountability to those in power

06-Dec-2010 (7 comments)
After reading the article titled ‘WikiLeaks: U.S.-Iran Relations "Now What" Moment?’ by NIAC’s Reza Marashi who identifies himself as a former Iran desk officer at the U.S. State Department, I failed to see exactly what ‘lessons learned’ are being presented following release of thousands of the not-so-diplomatic cables by WikiLeaks -- an act that the writer repeatedly labels as an “inexcusable security breach” throughout his treatise>>>

Perpetual waste of talents

Why Iran is in doldrums, scientifically

06-Dec-2010 (16 comments)
That Iran, with 10% of the world's known oil reserves, 2nd in natural gas reserves, and an intelligent eager workforce, is going through the most dire of circumstances in living memory, is not a secret. Iran's economy is basically in the doldrums. It looks up to countries like Qatar, Emirates, and Turkey for how to get things done, and is ruled by a ruthless religious dictatorship, all while its environment plummets down the drain>>>

Sama’ (The Audition-4)

I felt my breath deepen with stage fright. I was not ready.

05-Dec-2010
Oddly, reciting the foreboding doomsday verses had restored my calm. I was bones and dust now, but soon I would remember who I was and what I had done. The verses were not grim warnings, but a merciful promise. Finally, this was to be the day when ignorance and oblivion would end and I would know where I fit in God’s plan when I was alive. Does man think that he will be left aimless? I recited the Koranic promise out loud over and over again>>>

Don't Bother

An agreement with the mullahs would be not worth the paper it is written on

03-Dec-2010 (89 comments)
The clerical regime has brought severe costs, such as economic mismanagement, brutality and religious pretensions, and no tangible benefits. Reminiscences about the Shah’s regime are becoming increasingly frequent and nostalgic. The clerics and their supporters believe that the United States is bent on getting rid of them and that their best hope for long-term survival is the nuclear program, which they cannot abandon. Realists in America and in Europe know that the real problem is not Iran’s nuclear quest but its regime>>>
