The motivations remain the same: penis against penis

21-Jan-2009 (4 comments)
"The ranks that you wear on your uniforms represent the chain of command. The soldiers with the higher ranks will give you orders. You must obey orders. This system is a hierarchy. The tradition and history of the ranks is as follows: each mark on your rank represents a penis! A private has one penis, a corporal has two, and a sergeant has three." One of my Basic Military Qualifications instructors mentioned these words with a grin on his face. I was becoming a young soldier in the Canadian Forces and I did not at the time appreciate what these words represented. In the instructor's example, the symbolism of domination and patriarchy were clear. In fact, these words in a way defined the five years of my experience as a soldier.>>>

Unexpectedly

Obama inaguration

21-Jan-2009
Unexpectedly, sun is rising on your shoulders
As you come from a long road of battle
While the blood is flowing from our ears
With the bad news penetrating day by day in our soul
While sorrow caves in on our lips and our chest
Remember we were lost in the darkness of history
While trying to find our way at the "railroad" >>>

Stop it…

Surely, nothing is easier than sitting in the basement of your parents’ house in North America and telling Gazans and Israelis “Lengesh Kon.”

19-Jan-2009 (17 comments)
I was reading the other day that to protest the massacres of Palestinians in Gaza, a popular political blog community has asked its members to stop blogging and go on a symbolic strike for one day. The idea was to call attention to atrocities committed by Israel by denying readers access to blogs for 24 hours. Shit, I’m all for that. As a matter of fact, I’ll pay all the bloggers around the world to take a week off and let the fucking internet breath. Do you bloggers ever take vacations? For god’s sake, stop polluting the internet with your self-serving, virtual hallucinations? Don’t you guys have jobs? How come your laptops don’t get infected with virus?>>>

Tea and chitchat with Parviz Kalantari

19-Jan-2009 (4 comments)
My mom had already arranged everything. She had bought tickets for us both to fly from Shiraz to Tehran, she had arranged with my cousin and his wife so that we could stay at their place in Tehran, and she had made a preliminary appointment to visit Parviz Kalantari, one of Iran's most outstanding contemporary artists. We were supposed to be there "sometimes" in the afternoon of Sunday, December 28th. So Sunday noon time, after arriving to my cousin's place the first thing she did was to call Ostad (or Master in Persian) Kalantari and nail down the appointment for 15.30. Mahbobeh (my cousin's wife) had prepared a "small" lunch, a 3 dishes menu including my favorite dish Ghormeh sabzi, a herb and meat stew served with saffron-rice>>>

19-Jan-2009 (one comment)

هوس

19-Jan-2009 (15 comments)

"Valkyrie" makes us think the unthinkable

18-Jan-2009 (9 comments)
Tom Cruise’s WWII thriller Valkyrie has had some oddly nonsensical reviews. I saw the film a few hours after I had returned from a Gaza protest rally; so images of civilian massacre were freshly painful on my mind, making one particular symbolism in the film go far with me. Von Stuaffenberg had lost an eye to the enemy, and the film made sure the audience kept that in mind. Despite the cruel wording, the "eye for an eye" directive in the Torah is meant to limit the retribution one can exact. It is a ban against unbridled vengeance. If someone pokes out your eye, then take his eye if you must. But you are forbidden to go on to kill his wife, burn his kids, tear down his house, take away his livelihood, and devastate his land>>>

18-Jan-2009 (one comment)

18-Jan-2009 (7 comments)

Hamid Rahmanian's “The Glass House”

16-Jan-2009 (2 comments)
The Glass House, competing in the World Documentary category at the Sundance Film Festival, is a one of those rare films that make you forget that you are watching a documentary. Hamid Rahmanian and Melissa Hibbard have given us a documentary that flows as easily as the tears of their young and troubled protagonists. The film, which Rahmanian shoots and directs, unravels the lives of downtrodden, runaway and distressed girls who have taken refuge in a private half-way house established by a benevolent Iranian expatriate, Marjaneh Halati>>>

In cold blood

Roots of Islamist and Communist movements in modern Iran

16-Jan-2009 (7 comments)
In 1941, after the forceful abdication of Reza Shah, the angry British government, who saw Reza as a former ally turned into a treacherous enemy, seriously considered the restoration of Qajar dynasty. However, the lead Iranian intellectuals (like Foroughi) could only foresee a major political upheaval, with the return of arrogant Qajars. Although Foroughi was persecuted by Reza Shah, he reasoned that the country had truly democratic laws (constitution) and if the Pahlavi crown prince was ready to respect them, there was no reason for a regime change. That way, Mohammad Reza Shah came to be the new constitutional monarch of Iran, who for nearly a decade respected the democratic institutions of the country. >>>

The Good Old Days

The world isn't going to wait

16-Jan-2009 (one comment)
The first few dates are fine, but somewhere around the fourth or fifth date, there'll be a couch and a T.V. - this will be in her apartment, not mine, since I have only a couch - and I know how nice a couch is and I know how nice sitting close together and touching is, and I know how much we deserve to sit and rest and let someone else do the living for a little bit, and I know how much it feels like living when we can talk about what we are watching, in a way that we couldn't talk about a book or a song on the radio, and it is like everything is laid out nice and easy, the two of us on the couch together and all that life on the television screen, everything is laid out nice and easy except for the world, except for just that one thing that asks you to be small at first>>>

The right to insult

You just don’t understand humor!

14-Jan-2009 (6 comments)
Holiday seasons are excuses for gathering and parties and fun. As usual this Christmas night became a perfect pretext to gather with friends, play games, eat, drink and be asked, as in all parties: “got any new jokes?” or “ let me tell you a joke”. However, when the joke telling starts, before you know it, the red zone is trespassed and male’s mother and sisters become subjects to all types of verbal aggression with sexual tone.In the following lines, I would like only to state what went though my mind, hearing men sharing their rhetorical (!) gifts of jokes and friendly insults to each other, over a game of backgammon and even in discussing a point>>>

Becoming

On a cold snowy day, our lives changed forever

Betty was my best friend. We were both obsessed with Orhan Pamuk. I have to confess that this obsession didn’t come to our mind naturally. It was like an inspiration by God or at least from one of his angels. At first it was a simple love. Like loving a pet, or a second cousin. But it changed on the day I noticed the subtle sarcasm on Pamuk’s lips, in a picture taken during the Nobel ceremony. Before going farther to confuse you – my dear reader – I have to tell you about myself and how everything started in the mind of your humble servant, a man with limited knowledge about the world>>>

14-Jan-2009 (30 comments)

A poem by a Black Baha'i poet

14-Jan-2009
