I climbed the bed and enjoyed the pleasant smell of the clean sheets. I waited to fall asleep. I turned right and turned left. I lay on my back and on my belly. I counted imaginary sheep jumping over an imaginary fence. “Close your eyes and don’t think,” was Mother’s cure for insomnia on stormy nights. But tonight, I couldn’t stop thinking. Mother’s desired blankness fit into another life. I kept my eyes shut, but I knew even if I looked, I wasn’t going to find those ghastly ghosts anymore. My brain, ravaged by thoughts. Astara, my beach, my childhood, gone. The old house, my well, my backyard destroyed. My deev, vanished. My Danny, dead>>>

غنچه

وقتی برادربزرگم ازدواج کرد، شانزده هفده سالش بود. این را از بزرگ تر ها که با هم حرف می زدند متوجه شدم. اما بزرگتر نشان می داد. "...عباس، این پسر شانزده هفده سالش بیشتر نیست، چطورداری زیر بارزن گرفتنش می روی؟ " و عباس که پدر من هم بود، بیشتر مواقع جوابی نمی داد. ولی یکی دو بار شنیدم که گفت" " ...چکار کنم، شاشش کف کرده...اگر برایش زن نگیرم می ترسم مریض بشود..." تا مدت ها نمی دانستم که چرا اگر زن نگیرد مریض میشود. یک بار دیگر که باز دراین مورد صحبت میکردند، حاج آقا صابونچی، گفت: " اوس عباس، مریض میشه چیه؟ مگه همه جوون هائی که زن ندارن مریض میشن؟ " و پدرم گفت تو شهر ما " دوب " اش پر از خانم هائی است که یک از یک خوشکل ترند و خیلیا شون هم مریضند...حاجی می ترسم سوزاک بگیرد " با اینکه شنیدم بیماری که پدر ازش می ترسد " سوزاک " است>>>

Shatranj

First of all, it’s not chess it’s shatranj. And yes the rules are different. In chess, the queen is the terror of the board. In shatranj nothing is more powerful than the rook. The humble piece that sits next to the king is the farzin, a wretched civil servant that can move only one square diagonally. There are more differences, but this isn’t about modern chess versus authentic shatranj, it’s a confession. We Iranians cheated in the very first game of shatranj ever played. In our defense, we didn’t start the whole affair, the Indians did>>>

مرگ و زندگی

این نوشته مقایسه ایست بین چند شعر از پروین اعتصامی (۱۹٠۷ – ۱۹۴۱) و فروغ فرّخ زاد ( ۱۹۳۵- ۱۹۶۷) در بارۀ مرگ و زندگی. پروین و فروغ دو شاعر زن ایرانی هستند که اوّلی حدود ربع قرن زودتر از دوّمی می زیسته است. یعنی فروغ ۶ ساله بوده که پروین از این محنت گاه جان بدر می کند. ولی همین ربع قرن فاصله ، تحوّلاتی در اشعار فروغ بوجود آورده که آن را از جمیع جهات از شعر پروین متمایز و متفاوت کرده است. در زیر به این تفاوتها از دریچۀ چشم و برخورد آن دو به مرگ و زندگی می پردازیم. به این شعر از فروغ توجّه کنید:>>>

Dear Number One, As ordered, I went to see the play We Are Not Spies in Berkeley this past weekend for the purpose of discovering the true identity and purpose of its Bahai author, Mansour Taeed. Disguised as a drama critic, I gained admission to this show despite the fact that the theater was sold out and people were being turned away at the gate. This report omits details regarding the beautiful agent I seduced in the line duty to get my ticket. First, my assessment of Bahai spy technology: it sucks. At the beginning of this one-man show, Taeed said the play would self-destruct soon after the performance ends. He even played the Mission Impossible theme. The play hasn’t self-destructed!>>>

نگاهی به درون

آشفته ام، در هم ریخته، و مثل کسی که پول زیادی را گم کرده باشد، مرتب سوراخ سُنبه های مغزم را می گردم. می دانم که خودم بانی بودم، و فقط بخاطر یک پُز و یک اَدا، که نه، نباید زود وا داد. باید مقاوم بود. باید طرف را اگر تشنه هم هست تشنه تر کرد، رهایش کردم. و شاید بیشتر به خاطر خودش بود که نمی خواستم گرفتار من بشود که فکر می کردم وصله مناسبی نیستم. و راستش بیشتر بخاطر کم شهامتی خودم بود. مردی بزدل که از عشق و از زندگی فرار کرد. این همه واهمه برای چی و از چی بود؟ و...باختم. من از آن آدم هائی هستم که اگر شانس هم در بزند، نه تنها گوش سنگینی دارم، که حتمن سرشاراز کندی هم هستم. و حالا پریشانی دائم خورده است دست افسردگی گه گاه و دارد کلافه ام می کند>>>

No War, No Surrender

Those who overlook the lessons of history are likely to repeat the mistakes of the past. President Barack Obama seems to be treading the same path on Iran that former President Jimmy Carter was on. That path led to the disastrous circumstances that are still being felt in today’s political sphere. Carter’s misstep was to turn on a key ally in the region the guise of promoting human rights, thereby assisting in the establishment of the current dictatorship. Carter urged that Shah’s regime take up the cause of human rights, in effect accusing the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, of blatant human rights violations. This was in the midst of Pahlavi’s democratic and economic reforms>>>

Action and Reaction

Any play with Iranian-born Bella (Ramezan-nia) Warda in the cast necessarily draws special attention to the acting. A cautious playwright creates a solid enough work to make her play’s ideas as immune to the quality of acting as possible, and playwright Joyce Van Dyke has done that in A Girl’s War. But powerful actors like Warda dig their spurs deep into the work, making it bolt like a trained animal shocked back into its wild nature. It is noticeable how much the other actors enjoy sharing their scenes with Warda as Arashaluis, the fiercely patriotic Armenian mother. To survive the intensity that this actress brings to the stage, the other actors courageously counter with their own show of force >>>

خیانت کردم

من چون از سکس با شوهرم بدم میامد، برای مدت طولانی فکر می کردم که من اصولا سرد مزاجم، که من از سکس بدم میاد و مشکل خیلی بزرگی در این زمینه دارم. نمیدانستم باید به کی بگم و چه کار بکنم. می دانستم داشتن ارگاسم برای زنها در انتهای عشقبازی با یک مرد چیز مهمیه و خیلی دلم می خواست من هم بدانم که چه احساسیه، اما نمی دانستم باید چکار کنم. حداقل سه بار متوجه شدم که بهم خیانت کرده، اما چون فکر می کردم من سردمزاجم، بعد از قهر و آشتی های وحشتناک بعدش، بخشیدمش و باهاش زندگی می کردم. تا اینکه با مردی سر کارم آشنا شدم و نمیدانم چطور شد که عاشقش شدم. او هم زن داشت. شش ماهی کاری نمی کردیم بجز اینکه تمام روزمان را با هم سرکار بگذرانیم.>>>

جنگ پير با جوان

اين كه سهرابِ نوجوان، بي گفتگو با پدري جهان‌پهلوان، بي هيچ تماسي با او، براي او تصميم‌گيري كند و پندار خامش را بي فراهم كردن تمهيدات لازم، عملي كند؛ حداقل، دستِ كم گرفتنِ رستم است و تنها از بي تجربگي ناشي مي‌شود. فراموش نكنيم كه برخي از پهلوانان شاهنامه، همچون زال و رستم مي‌توانسته‌اند تاج بر سر نهند و شاه ايران شوند؛ اما ترجيح داده‌اند پهلوان باقي بمانند. پشت و پناه مردم، شاهان و سرزمين‌شان باشند و هر زمان فرۀ ايزدي از شاهي، با خارج شدن از مسير داد و دهش، گسست، شاهي دادگر بيابند. در سراسر شاهنامه مهم‌ترين وظيفة پهلوانان غير از دفاع از سرزمين‌شان، نظارت بر كار شاهان است؛ مهار خودكامگي؛ نصيحت شاهان و در صورت لزوم تنبيه آن‌ها و اين همه امكان را با اثبات غمخواري و از خودگذشتگي كسب كرده‌اند. هر زمان لازم بوده از هيچ كوششي براي ياري رساندن به مردم و سرزمينشان فروگذار نكرده‌اند.>>>
