FILM
A testimony to the ingenuity, entrepreneurship and resilience of the Iranian youth
Rolo May once said creativity arises out of the tension between spontaneity and limitation. Bahman Ghobadi’s most recent work portraits how this is manifested in the day to day life in Iran, in particular in that of the Iranian youth. No One Knows About Persian Cats opens with Ghobadi recording a Kurdish song in an underground recoding studio in Tehran. This is his only cameo appearance in the entire film. On the surface, the plot is simple. Ashkan and Negar, two young musicians are looking to form a band and dream of taking part in a music festival in Europe

THOUGHTS

NOVEL

GEOEYE
The Famous IKONOS Satellite Image of Azadi Square
In the days prior to the Bahman 22 anniversary of the Iranian revolution, Khamenei’s forces were making furious efforts to tighten a blindfold on the media so that the world could not see the magnitude of the Iranian opposition. At the same time the opposition movement, with far fewer resources, had to find a way to get the truth out with as little bloodshed as possible. It was during this time that Mark Brender, the Vice President of Communications at GeoEye, an operator of high-resolution Earth imaging satellites, received a call from an unusual customer

IDEAS

CHESS
The love that bound us is all I remember clearly
It was summer of 1972. It is a memory but plays like a dream in my head. I spent a lot of time with my youngest uncle Hamid and his friends. Mostly Hadaf graduating year students who were ok with a kid my age hanging with them. I was good at Takhte, convoluted jokes & conversations, and could handle their version of Shah/Vazir that included real slaps that left finger prints on the face for a good half a day, Otooye Atashin that could take a chunk of your hair off, and Shah's takht who would literally sit on you throughout his reign that was always longer than appropriate and ended up in tyranny no matter who got to be king

Off the Silk Road
Our Land Rover is parked in a gravel lot
We have rhubarb drink over white cotton fields
With no end, fresh morning breeze over Neyshabur
Turquoise land sings to its Roof, Mount Binâlud
And smiles at us young children from Tehran
Our vacant summer time

GREENS
The struggle ahead would be as long as it would be trying
In the days leading upto 22 Bahman, the Iranian blogosphere was abuzz over whether a momentous turnout would mark a turning point in the Green movement. DC's policy and think-tank circles were excited, too, with many starting to see Iran's so-called "democracy clock" as outpacing its "nuclear clock" for the first time. The mainstream press also again took notice, putting aside its ceaseless coverage of the nuclear issue -- if only fleetingly -- to cover the another showdown in the first major social movement of the twenty-first century

DEMOCRACY
The Green Movement is not doomed
Almost everything that has been written about Iran these past months has made the assumption that one of the primary goals of the Green Movement is to transform Iran into a democracy. However, there exists a fundamental problem; everybody is making the assumption that Iranians in Iran know what democracy is and how the democratic process works. The truth is Iranians in Iran do not have the faintest idea how democracy works simply because Iranian culture and Islam, as practiced in Iran, are both undemocratic

VIEW
Destiny of Iran's Reform Movement
When on February 11, 2010, millions of Iranians from 818 large and small cities across the country and from all walks of life, young and old, men and women, workers and professionals, turned out to celebrate the thirty-first anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, it was despite the threats and demagogueries of the Western leaders and corporate mass media. For weeks prior to the anniversary day, all news agencies, the mainstream broadcasting media, and spokesmen of the offices of the U.S. president as well as the Congress and the European Parliament were all tirelessly engaged in demonizing the Iranian leaders
