Even the smallest thing you can do may end up having some big results in the end
by Mahtab Deljoo
Within that few seconds of going to the street and looking around to gauge the situation, I lost my cousin. Looking around to find her while trying to plan for the best way to escape, I saw a woman who had fallen(sitting on ground) being surrounded by at least four or five of the savage guards who were hitting her by their batons mercilessly. It was just through the color of her disheveled hair, still so vivid in my mind, that I knew she was not my cousin. And I knew that I had to run, otherwise I would be trapped by a few and would have the same experience that woman was having

LION & SUN

THEOCRACY

STORY
All she wanted from him just then was to walk down the street holding flowers
At the beginning, they were like anybody else. They were wrestling with the notion of what a man and a woman together are supposed to be, and their respective notions were wrestling with each other, knowing that the best they could hope for was a light and gentle wrestling, which it was. You couldn't run from those notions, and you couldn't spend all your effort on trying to knock them down either. They went back to when you were a boy and a girl, and you might knock down that boy and girl in the process

WISH LIST
So what is to be done? How do we move forward to help bring about democracy, which everyone seems to want, in Iran. We have to come up with a set of demands that are broad enough to include all the disgruntled factions who want to help the popular yet still largely middle class struggle in Iran. We have to unite or we will not be strong enough against a regime which all agree will not hesitate to have a blood bath to save itself. The ten demands of the five intellectuals should be embraced because they provide the democratic framework within which we can debate the future of our beloved Iran

REALITY
How many of us will return to Iran to be a part of these historic times?
I got an email from a fella Twitter/Facebook warrior the other day, announcing that he had posted his “personal anti IRI demonstration” video on YouTube. Turns out that he and a few of his cyber vigilante friends held demonstrations in the basement of his house in Los Angles which included shouting anti IRI slogans and dancing to a pro green movement rap music followed by burning Khamanie’s posters (faces were blurred for fear of reprisal). As I was watching this so-called private demonstration, I wondered how my fellow Iranians inside Iran feel about this

WARNING

FORWARD
Keeping the Green Movement alive
The Islamic Republic is in dire straits, and deservedly so. Years of economic mismanagement (exacerbated by three rounds of UN-imposed sanctions), political repression, rampant corruption, and international adventurism seem to have taken their toll on the regime. A good indication of the regime’s increasing vulnerability to external pressure was the inability of the hardliners to prevent, just a few days ago, massive opposition protests from taking place on the streets of Tehran and other major Iranian cities during the Ashura ceremonies

U.S.-IRAN
Obama has taken a losing hand and transformed it into a victory over Iran
by Gary Sick
Pretend for a moment that you are the president of the United States and you have gotten yourself into a bit of a hole with your Iran policy. First you offered to negotiate with Iran over nuclear (and potentially other) issues without the Bush preconditions. But there were powerful political forces that felt this was an example of your inexperience and even appeasement tendencies. So you unwisely accepted a six month deadline for the negotiations to show that you meant business.

PREDICTION
It is only a matter of time before there will be a new Iran
by Martin Schram
At year’s end, pundits are prone to partake in New Year’s predictions. It is a pursuit often done lightheartedly. But every so often facts align themselves in ways that require genuine assessment. And a willingness to make a prediction that may be so bold that it cannot later be hemmed or hawed or rationalized away. That gives a pundit an advantage over those other folks who prognosticate for a living at the CIA. They have so much intelligence at their fingertips and under their fedoras that they are very good at prophecies of geopolitical nuance – but not at sensing truly seismographic regime changes that may be at hand

CLASH

STORY
Last November some Iranian.com writers began a collaborative project to write an experimental story. The premise was that someone would write the first paragraph of a story and then the next writer had to add his or her part and so on until the last person who had to write the ending. Order of the writers was determined randomly, except for the first writer. We had a lot of fun working together, but when it was finished we had to hold on to the story for a while in view of the sad events in Iran. We would like to share the finished story with you at this time in the hopes that you might enjoy reading it as much as we did writing it

Iranians want regime change
Six months ago, Iranians went to the streets, chanting "Where is my vote?" This is how the Green Revolution started. The protesters now no longer merely seek democratic elections but want regime change. Their new slogans are: "Khamenei is a murderer and his rule is unjust," "Neither Gaza nor Lebanon, I only give my life for Iran," and "Independence, Freedom and an Iranian Republic." In other words, they demand a stop to Iran's support for terrorists in Palestine, Lebanon and Iraq; the separation of state and religion; and consider Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as public enemy No. 1
