Sweeping Sanctions

The House and Senate voted Thursday to impose sweeping new sanctions against Iran, sending the legislation to the President’s desk for approval. Proponents have called the legislation the “toughest Iran sanctions ever proposed,” while critics argue it will do nothing to halt the Iranian nuclear program and that Congress should have eased sanctions that punish innocent Iranians. The bill’s supporters have made it clear that their primary intention is to punish Iran’s nuclear activities, though human rights concerns have been added as a secondary consideration>>>

اعدام عبدالمالک ریگی کسی را شگفت‌زده نکرد. حکومتی که خود از آدم‌کشان حرفه‌ای حمایت می‌کند و آنان را در پناه خود گرفته است به سختی می‌تواند مدعی اجرای عدالت باشد، و کاربرد مجازات اعدام از سوی این حکومت پس از محاکمات عموما ناعادلانه و بدون رعایت کمترین ضوابط دادرسی تنها بر پرونده قطور جرایم خود حاکمیت می‌افزاید. برای چنین حکومتی، مجازات اعدام عمدتا یک حربه سیاسی برای ارعاب و سرکوب است، و ربط چندانی به جرایم و جنایاتی که قربانیان اعدام به آن متهم می‌شوند ندارد>>>

عشق واقعی فراتر از دین

بسیاری از ما ایرانیان از کودکی با داستانهای "لیلی و مجنون"، "یوسف و زلیخا" و حتی "رومئو ژولیت" آشنا بوده ایم، اما با برخی از داستانهای ایرانی الاصل آشنایی نداشته و نداریم. برای مثال، من به طور کاملا تصادفی با منظومه "ویس و رامین" آشنا شدم و متوجه شدم که داستانی از ایران باستان است. پس از خواندن منظومه، شروع به کنکاش کردم ومتوجه شدم که این داستان حقیقتا از نظر غالب مردم دور مانده و بسیاری افراد حتی اسم آن را هم نشنیده اند.>>>
