The City of Joy and Protest

Kolkata: birthplace of the intellectual and cultural resurgence of modern India

26-Apr-2010 (2 comments)
In the evening that I arrived in Kolkata, the musician A.R. Rahman was giving a concert in the city’s Salt Lake Stadium. “He is our double Oscar winner,” the receptionist at my hotel said with obvious pride. “More than one hundred thousand people are expected to attend the concert.” Dubbed India’s Mozart, the multi-talented Rahman excels in Hindustani and Carnatic music, as well as Western classics. Presently, the din of another kind of music attracted me to a night club on the other side of the lobby>>>

Art for Free

How much is music worth for the average Iranian?

26-Apr-2010
what music or musicians are worth for people! And in specific; for Iranians! Are Iranians art lovers or are they art owners? In order to answer this question, let’s study the generations. The generation that has grown up with Internet and is familiar with the accessibility it brought with itself, is generally unfamiliar with the concept of paying for music. It is not only not paying attitude for music that is important but also the culture this generation brought with itself>>>

24-Apr-2010 (24 comments)

Tehran’s Fault Lines

No crisis plan in case an earthquake happens

24-Apr-2010 (8 comments)
Tehran’s probability to have an earthquake is quite high due to some major fault lines going across the city based on many national geotechnical projects done in this field. The very densely populated metropolitan is the home of an estimated 13 million people and day-population of 15, is fully covered with seismically hazardous buildings. Before reinforcing the building seismic codes, buildings were built with no provisions of earthquake proof structures>>>

The Hurt Locker’s Missing Disclaimer

No Arabs Were Harmed During the Making of this Movie

24-Apr-2010
I just saw The Hurt Locker on DVD. Movies about the psychological travails of professional killers are not exactly my cup of tea, but I have to admit that this one richly deserved the Oscars for Film Editing, Sound Mixing and Sound Effects. Its explosions jolted even my supremely blasé Maine Coon out of her slumber and favorite perch. I don’t even begrudge Katherine Bigelow and Mark Boal their Oscars for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay>>>

Sherlock Holmes’ Daughter (3)

“I’ve been having dreams about you"

24-Apr-2010 (2 comments)
I wanted Christie to feel like I needed her, but there was no way I would use Paul’s immaculate truck to actually move furniture. A tiny scratch could total our friendship and I would never see his wife again. I rented a U-Haul trailer, occasionally driving the truck around the block so that when Paul inspected it he couldn’t tell Christie the odometer hadn’t budged. Operating Paul’s pristine machine that week I had become overly sensitized to fine craftsmanship. Every time I saw Katie at work, I marveled at her breathtaking sense of self-design>>>

Home again!

Coming back, I had a greater appreciation for everything in my life

23-Apr-2010 (6 comments)
When I came back from my trip to Iran in October 2009, I was not sure if I could go there for Iranian New year but late in December my dad suffered a stroke. He was in ICU for a week and I was not told until he was released. I was devastated at first because he could only repeat the same few words with heavy stuttering and I knew he was being told I was his daughter without recognizing who I really was. I decided I had to go to Iran so seeing me would help my dad since I was his favorite child>>>

22-Apr-2010 (7 comments)

Invisible Empire

Whether it's called conspiracy or something else, the facts are there

22-Apr-2010
The story of new world order became a well known matter by most people since the time that former president of the United States; G.H. Bush openly spoke about it. In the first glance, the new order of the world with one superpower after break up of Soviet Union, and creation of a single world government system to run the affairs of the whole planet does not seem a bad idea. After all, different nations share the same environment on a planet with limited resources which is more like a very tiny dot in a vast universe that its realities change frequently as human's knowledge advances>>>

Hero Pizza

Excerpt from second novel

21-Apr-2010 (one comment)
There was no missing the restaurant on Ventura Boulevard. The typical modern storefront was converted into a Persian Palace by attaching plywood cutouts of columns and pointy arches to the exterior. The gold and white painted attachments looked like they were salvaged from a high school production of Arabian Nights. The restaurant was named after the snow-capped dormant volcano that towers above the city of Tehran, Damavand. My mom grew up at the foot of that mountain in fear it would erupt and take her away in a flood of molten lava>>>

Sinful Urge

I fearlessly ripped the veil of shame

21-Apr-2010 (4 comments)
Neither the soothing sound of a breeze, nor the tweeting birds or the melody of rain played on the stereo system in my bedroom gave me the comfort I deserved. My mind was inescapably trapped by a grueling urge throwing my entire body into painful disarray. Once again I was captivated by an insatiable craving in the middle of the night. By hardly lifting my eyelids, I was persuaded by the heavy burden of their weight it was too early to be tomorrow; the torment was bound to linger on>>>
