LIFE

On Hair

My hair defined me the minute I began to lose it

25-Jul-2010 (8 comments)
All my life I’d had long hair. While the rest of me didn’t look distinctively Iranian, I had the long, thick, wavy hair Persian girls are known for. Little did I know while I had a full head of it, that my hair was an integral part of me, as superficial as that sounds, but it was. A few weeks after I was diagnosed with breast cancer, my nurse Tammy talked to me about the eight rounds of chemo that I was set to receive before surgery. I saw a look of trepidation cross her face as she started to talk about me losing my hair>>>

ETHNICITY

The E Factor

Role of ethnicity as an added burden in women’s struggle for their rights

25-Jul-2010 (3 comments)
Is ethnicity important in women’s struggle for their rights, at all? Studying English in middle school, this question seemed an exciting one. It made me imagine myself abroad and answer it proudly. But, this innocent imagination was shattered. Yes, I grew up as a woman facing the reality of much discrimination. Discriminations that kill you and re-kill you, shape you and reshape you, frame you and reframe you to the point that you don’t know who you are>>>

SASSANIAN

Master Builders

Influence of Sassanid architecture reached far beyond their borders

25-Jul-2010 (3 comments)
The glorious Achaemenid Persian empire dominated all of the Middle East commencing from 550 to 330BC , Alexander the great conquered the Persian kingdom and destroyed the capital city of Persepolis .By all means the Sassanians (who were the descendants of the Achaemenid Empire) wished to revive the former glory of the Achaemenid Empire, this included their structural design, the Greek conquest of Persia inaugurated the spread of Hellenistic art into Western Asia; but if the East accepted the outward form of this art, it never really assimilated its spirit>>>

Can Obama keep his promise?

Young Iranians hold the greatest hope for a democratic Iran

22-Jul-2010 (15 comments)
The early verdict on the new Iran sanctions is that even the "smart" sanctions have proven to be, well, dumb. Instead of targeting Iranian government officials connected to the nuclear program or who are complicit in human rights abuses, the new sanctions are punishing young Iranians who have been the greatest allies of democracy, human rights, and accountability in Iran. Late last week, it was revealed that young Iranians looking to attend college abroad are now facing serious impediments because of new sanctions>>>

The Neocon Method

The Case of Greenwald and Parsi

22-Jul-2010 (24 comments)
One time-honored method for obscure writers to gain notoriety is to viciously attack a much more popular writer or public figure in the hopes said person will respond in kind — witness my constant attacks on Barack Obama, who I thought by now would at least answer me during a weekend radio address or something. Anyway, it’s not surprising that Benajamin Kerstein (who?), a writer for The New Ledger (the what?), would choose to blast the much more popular and accomplished Salon.com blogger Glenn Greenwald for being insufficiently “pro-Israel” given the latter’s blistering and effective attacks on the policies of the apartheid state>>>

TERRORISM

22-Jul-2010 (one comment)

Bomb Iran?

What would that accomplish?

20-Jul-2010 (8 comments)
Joe Klein of Time magazine has a new piece out this week indicating that after being largely dismissed during the Bush administration, "the military option is very much back on the table" with respect to Iran's nuclear program. And while he notes that "the White House remains as skeptical as ever about a military strike," the Pentagon, the CIA and Central Command seem to be doing serious planning about how such a strike might be carried out. Klein cites an Israeli military source who suggests that the Central Command has a much better plan now due to better "human intelligence": >>>

VERDICT

Mojahedin 1, USA 0

Legal victory for human rights and civil liberties

20-Jul-2010 (117 comments)
Last Friday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in Washington ruled that the U.S. State Department cannot arbitrarily designate the People's Mujahadin Organization of Iran (PMOI) as a foreign terrorist organization, thus imposing criminal penalties on any American citizen who offers so much as a nickel to the group. The State Department had since 1997 -- with little or no explanation- repeatedly re-designated the PMOI as a foreign terrorist organization>>>

19-Jul-2010 (7 comments)
Directors Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud were back on the French Croisette in Cannes, but this time not to present a new movie but announce the making of two in a near future. The first En Attendant Azrael aka Waiting for Azrael will start shooting on the 19th of July at the Legendary Babelsberg Studios in Berlin and will be followed by Le Onzième Laureate aka The Eleventh Laureate described by it's creators as something of a Western Spaghetti with a Persian flavour, set on the Caspian Sea>>>

THE END

Sherlock Holmes' Daughter (10)

My heart believed her, but my mind knew better

19-Jul-2010 (11 comments)
Katayoon and I spent the night together at her house the night before her business trip with Paul. Tradition be damned, I didn’t want to waste the last few hours of our romance yelling futile accusations and hearing pointless denials. But I felt justified in being irked at her for what she had pulled on me in front of Paul. That morning while he and I were huddled over a project, she came from behind and hugged me around the neck. She had thrown down the gauntlet, and there was nothing I could do but let my feelings do the reacting>>>

19-Jul-2010 (one comment)

DEATH ROW

Crushed under stones

Long list of those awaiting execution by stoning

17-Jul-2010 (3 comments)
As protests against the stoning of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani arose amongst the public and western officials, the IRI embassy in London announced that the verdict would not be stoned to death. On the contrary, the Secretary of Judiciary Commission of Human Rights declared that death by stoning does exist in the law of the country and that it would be implemented. Now, it is feared that the Islamic Republic of Iran may decide to suddenly execute all those sentenced to stoning>>>

Awakening Cyrus the Great

First national film about Koorosh-e-Kabir

17-Jul-2010 (11 comments)
Iranians called him the father, Babylonians called him the protector, Jews called him the messiah and Greeks called him the law giver. The outstanding leader, Cyrus embraced the known world and established security for the oppressed and became one of the most important figures of ancient history. He is also mentioned in the Quran known as Zulqarnain. For the first time, a national film will be made about Koorosh-e-Kabir, also known as Cyrus the Great in the English speaking world>>>
