PAHLAVIS
The Pahlavis are clearly as human and vulnerable as the rest of us
Muhammad Sahimi, who writes for TehranBureau.com told Time magazine last week: “Iranians are concerned about Iran. But, almost none commit suicide because of it.” He was referring to the claim that Alireza Pahlavi’s suicide may have resulted, in the words of his older brother Reza, from the fact that Pahlavi was “deeply disturbed by all the ills fallen upon his beloved homeland.”

ALIREZA
Political pathogens and pathologies
Apart from the tragedy of Ali Reza Pahlavi's suicide, what is now even more unpalatable is the crude reaction of the complex ridden, pseudo-intellectual, guerrilla fighters of yore, who have offered nothing but churlish asinine statements which more often than not point out the wealth of the Pahlavi family and how their wealth or 'thievery' should somehow be comforting them at this time. From associate professors to armchair latte sipping revolutionaries, all have weighed in on their reasons as to why this family does not deserve our sympathies or condolences

WHY
Why did Prince Ali Reza Pahlavi kill himself?
Is it possible that Ali Reza Pahlavi was forced to take his own life in protest? Is it possible that he was so psychologically tormented by the human rights violations and atrocities he saw in Islamic Republic and the unjust and unfounded accusations and bullying against his father, the King, that he took his own life as other young Iranians in Iran who have been tortured, imprisoned, and blocked from education and work? Prince Ali Reza's suicide note clearly expresses these feelings

TRAGEDY

LIFE
Alireza Pahlavi and the aftermath of his death
by Maral Karimi
The death of a young man in the prime of his life is sad, but here’s why I think some may not feel the same. In academics, we learn early on that every phenomenon must be studied in the context in which it happens; otherwise we fail to see the full picture. Alireza Pahlavi wasn’t just any 44 year old committing suicide; he was the son of the much controversial former Shah of Iran, and naturally this attachment stirs much sympathy along with abhorrence. To expect individuals to treat this as just any other suicide is trivializing it

SUICIDE
by hamneshine bahar

KHATAMI

WikiLeaks: Hard-Liners block Ahmadinejad from making nuclear deal
by Huffington Post
According to a recently released cable obtained by WikiLeaks, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was slapped in the face by Revolutionary Guard Chief of Staff Mohammed Ali Jafari. According to the cable, Ahmadinejad surprised the Supreme National Security Council by taking a liberal posture on opposition protests. The president allegedly argued that people felt "suffocated," and that allowing more social and personal freedoms, as well as more freedom of the press, would help to defuse the situation

ECONOMY
Ending subsidies and the Iranian opposition
Rationalizing Iran’s economy, reducing its avenues of waste and cutting down its budget deficit is not good news to the U.S. State Department, western mass media and anti-Iran groups comprised of old monarchists and also to the self-styled “left”, and liberal groups. To them, the worse the socio-economic condition of Iran and its people, the better for the realization of their hopes for “regime change”. Therefore, they consider each and every step of economic reform as an opportunity to incite the people and use them as a vehicle to come to power

TRAVELER
Just a few days away from boarding an El AL 777 to Tel Aviv, I got an email saying that our government-sponsored friendship trip has been delayed because Israel's foreign ministry is in the middle of a salary dispute. Foreign service diplomats miffed over being paid much less than Mossad, IDF and other government agencies are showing up at work in jeans, sneakers, and T-shirts that say on them , "I'm a poor diplomat." The first thing I thought of was whether those shirts come in extra large because Manouchehr Mottaki could really use one

WIKILEAKS
"I meet Arab leaders and journalists at various conferences and I assume it is not just the leaders of Arab states who are concerned about Iran; but it is the general consensus about this. To me there is a real irony in all of this. Why is it that Iran has so much influence and power? My answer to that is: the United States. After 9/11 we went into Afghanistan and scattered the Taliban, who were Iran’s enemies, and then turned around and invaded Iraq and overthrew Saddam Hussein, who was Iran’s worst enemy to the west, and suddenly Iran was left with no natural enemies except for the U.S."

EYEWITNESS
Ali Saremi's letter before execution
Since [Ali Khamenei's] accession to the throne, I have been in prison and I am unaware what is happening outside... At the same time when I was arrested, an interrogator claimed that there were only a total of 80 political prisoners in the entire country. Right now, there are more than 400 political prisoners only in Evin and Gohardasht prisons. I don’t know about the rest of the country. Besides, in those years, a few party insiders were politically active. Right now, even that does not exist. It isn’t very difficult to determine under what conditions non-political prisoners live

DIVISIONS

PANAHI
Harsh sentencing of a world-renowned director prompts international protests
When world-renowned filmmaker Jafar Panahi was sentenced to six years in prison earlier this week, the verdict reverberated both inside and outside Iran. Not only did authorities in Tehran hand down an exceptionally harsh sentence, they also decreed that the 50-year-old Panahi will be banned from filmmaking, screenwriting and traveling abroad for the next 20 years. According to his relatives, Panahi has also been banned from talking to the media. Along with Panahi, Muhammad Rasoulof, another filmmaker involved with Panahi’s movie, was also sentenced to six years in prison
